88whitemanche
What's up guys I've been running across a lot of 4cyl 5speeds with 8.25s but I want to know what years would fit my comanche...I've seen 4 pre97 Cherokees and 2 97+ Cherokees with them.... What years best fits my comanche 4cyl 5speed 2.5 with 4.10 gears....
Incommando
They are all the same width but none will bolt in. The spring pads and shock mounts are different. For one thing XJ's are SOA & MJ's are SUA. You can easily adapt one if you can weld. Look for a'97-newer to get the stronger 29 spline version
Rockfrog
Going from 27 to 29 spline is as easy as swapping spider gears and shafts ... so don't limit yourself. The switch to 29 spline occured in 96 so they'll be a mixer year. In any event a 8.25 is loads better than a D35. I also like that they used equal length shafts so only one spare for both sides. 88whitemanche
Ok I know about the spring pads... But the difference from 27spline to 29spline is just the axle shafts and spider gears? Nothing to do with the transfer case or anything correct?
Rockfrog
Correct ... but when you go from a D35 to an 8.25 you will need to shorten your rear driveshaft some.
88whitemanche
Oh that sucks.... How much would you think I would have to shorten it? And also even with a 3" lift would i need to change driveshaft?
Incommando
The side gears in a 29 spline carrier are physically larger than the 27 spline version. The axle shafts are larger. I think that you will find that the carriers need to be swapped as well.

88whitemanche
This is actually the first time I've seen so many... And they are all 2wd Though..I would love some of these gears for my cherokee with 3.55 but it'll take longer to find front gears than rear
carnuck
Make it SOA and you probably won't need to shorten the drive shaft.
cruiser54
Make it SOA and you probably won't need to shorten the drive shaft. That's a simple solution to a complex problem. Or do I have that backwards? Who knows? Ever since the "event" things just ain't the same.
carnuck
Since he's welding on spring pads anyways, how much extra work is it? (I know. I know. He has to lift the front to match)

mvusse
The nose of an 8.25" is an inch longer than a D35. If your yoke has at least 1" of rust that has never been inside the transfer case your rear driveshaft will work. The 29 spline ones are stronger than the 27 spline ones. The changeover was some time during the 1996 model year.

I just offered another option that "shouldn't" cost more. I did that myself putting an XJ axle in mine. I even run OEM shocks but the mounts I made weren't as elegant as I have found since. I also replaced my springs at the same time with Metric Tonne ones and converted to 4x4 so I could clear 33/9.50/15 tires. I even run stock ebrake cables. I just moved the floor brackets slightly. You have to add shock mounts when you do an 8.25 swap as well. I have swaybar plates from an early Jtruck (you can probably use CJ aftermarket ones. Test fit them to the shock lower bushing) which are flat plate with a mount stud. You will need a longer spring centering bolt to pass through the plate and into the axle's centering hole. I'm not one to re-use spring U-bolts, but the 8.25 is a wider tube and the spring plate off the D35 won't fit either.
88whitemanche
Ok to bring this thread back to life... I wanted to ask if I were to buy a 27spline 8.25 with 4.10 gears and if I grab some axle shafts from a 29spline (I do plan on buying a locker) is there any differences? Sorry if I sound newbie I'm just trying to set myself up the right way...thanks in advance

If you go with a lunch box locker you will need a carrier for a 29 spline axle.

Ok yeah I was planning to buy the lunchbox from lokka...so I'll have to be on a look out for a full case 29spline 8.
Timeless
And if you switch carriers for a lunchbox, you'll have to re-setup the gears. Same as with a full case locker.
Incommando
Research Lokkas even on this forum. The extra $45 for an actual Aussie might be worth it
