Lime
So, I was derping around the internet and I found this place. Turns out I'm not the only one who loves their Comanche! I've become sort of obsessed with mine, even though I got it totally by chance and didn't even know what a Comanche was before then. I'm a poor married student with three kids and we needed a second vehicle. Every once in a while I wish I had a truck, so I decided, hey, I'll get a truck. I told my father-in-law (who always has a few old trucks and is constantly trading them) to watch out for a truck for me. My criteria were 1) It works, and 2) under $1000. Couple weeks later, he dropped off this Comanche for $800. That was a year ago and I love my truck to pieces. I found this forum because I was looking up how to convert a 2WD to a 4WD. I was on a "road" on Crown land this summer and managed to get myself stuck. At which point I began to dig myself out. At which point my shovel broke. At which point I decided... I want big tires and all-wheel drive, lol. The interior needs work, too. The fabric of the ceiling isn't attached and hangs down onto my head, so it's currently held up with pushpins and the seat's a little rough. Some rust, but not too bad. Then I found pictures of some really cool Comanches and started drooling. Now I'm getting ambitious. I'm a total newb to cars, but I've always wanted to learn, so I've been thinking I'd have some fun with my truck. Parked on a snowdrift. Hey, no one else would park there and all the other spots were taken. Here's a pic of me being stuck. The dog was thrilled.

gogmorgo
Good to see new members! Welcome! Also, you mention crown land, so you're Canadian? Where are you from, if you don't mind? Also a broke student, in Saskatoon. Single with no kids, though :(

Incommando
The conversion to 4wd is a common one. The easiest donor is an XJ Cherokee. The major components you will need from the donor are the front axle, driveshaft, transmission, transfer case, and shifter w/linkage. Your rear drive shaft will need to be shortened but you can find the appropriate length in the tech section. You cannot use the stock XJ shaft due to the wheelbase difference. Unbolt your tranny, bolt in the new tranny/t-case combo in its place. Unbolt your current front straight axle and the 4x4 front axle bolts right in. Cut a lil' hole in the floor for the shifter. Attach drive shafts. Go. Yes, that is pretty simplified version but you can find numerous in-depth articles with the search function. Near me I could source all of the parts for $300-$400 bucks. If they are plentiful near you then buying a junk or wrecked XJ is sometimes easier as it would have tons of extra little things that you might need and you can scrap the vehicle when you are done to get some cash back. Lime
Thanks for the welcome, everyone! I'm finding this site very informative already. Yesterday I was replacing my car deck and the last guy cut the wires rather than buy an adapter, so I'm stuck figuring out what each wire is, as they are not the same colours as the wire harness for my new car deck. Sure enough, I found the info I needed on this site. Also, you mention crown land, so you're Canadian? Where are you from, if you don't mind? I'm from Lethbridge. I was up in Red Deer camping with my son when I got stuck.

Kids and their newfangled ways of creating followers. Welcome to the club, Lime. Sounds like another happy owner, good looking rig too. Seeing as how all these MJ's are popular with the college crowd and such, I'm thinking AMC just released this truck ahead of it's time. Good 'ol forward thinking AMC, make your name known long after your demise. :laughin:

My college classmates also admire my truck, which I had not anticipated when I set out to buy an $800 vehicle which I only expected to last a year or two, lol. It's goin' strong, though. Can't complain one bit.

I used to be one, now I'm just a poor dude with a degree and a comanche. It makes for a nice floor mat if nothing else. Oh yea, welcome to the cult/club/whatever this the word of the day is. Never had a negative comment on it, and I get lots of funny looks and stares  It'll last you more than a year or two, I promise you. MJs aren't too good at dying, and don't be surprised when you end up wanting to keep it forever. Just check those floorboards! And post more pics, we love pics here. P.S. I'm impressed that you got so stuck with a 2wd truck that you broke your shovel! P.P.S. MJs are great vehicles to learn with. Simple, reliable and easy enough to work on. earl*t
Hey LIME!!! I didn't intend my monkey business or exaggerated social persuasion to create :hijack: . Your story is a familiar one. Discovery of our truck's club can be comparable to opening Pandora's box. Who knows what's inside! As amazing as many of the Manches on site are, the personalities behind the pictures are equally impressive. If you're so inclined, consider a build thread in the "Your project MJs" forum. We'd be interested in following the progression of your truck and the building of your automotive related skills. The majority take quite a while and surprisingly many are undertaken by poor college students. :rotf: There are also a few ambitious high school students among our ranks. Happy wrenching. :wrench:

earl*t
Wouldn't think of forgettin' those old boys Spector. :rotfl2: They're the fellas that don't put anything in the space for age in the profiles. Our MJs are antiques and the older guys... well they're are a lot older than our antiques. Whooee, I just remembered I forgot my age in my profile. :teehee:

Lime
The monkeys are fine, except they're not monkeys, they're apes! /wiseass I was thinking of starting a build thread, but the only thing I've done so far is replace the car deck. Might do speakers next. I have one semester left in school so I'm not going to undertake anything ambitious until that's over for sure.
