I'm in the same boat as you.....looking for an XJ and either finding all clapped out ones with 200K+ miles on them, or nice low-mileage ones that are SERIOUSLY overpriced.

I'll admit, I've seen a few KJ's that caught my eye. :help:

I don't mind the older Libby's but the new ones I don't care for. Always liked the demin-ish blue offered on them. A friend just recently bought a 2012 and I keep calling it his "soccer mom" car and even told him I'm sticking one of those decals on his rear window along with the stick figure family. A 5spd though, that's not something you see everyday in a Libby.

The KJ Liberty ( '02-'07) was a better platform then the heavier KK's ('08-'13). KJ's are quite capable. I have seen it proven time and again that they are every bit as capable as an XJ with a similar lift & tire combo. I regularly wheeled with 3 KJ's and 2 XJ's. (Yes, XJ's are easier to modify and can be modified beyond what you can modify a KJ.) My '05 had a wide-ratio SIX speed ( yes, six speed) NSG370 ('02-'04 used a NV3500 5-spd) stick. Even with the stock 3.55 gears mine had the same factory crawl ratio as an automatic Tj Rubicon at 48:1. That is roughly twice the crawl ratio of the average (AW4/231/3.55) XJ at 26:1. The 6-speed option also got you an honest to goodness 241J transfer case instead of the 231J used in about everything else. No, it was not the 241OR Rubi version. It retained the 2.72:1 low range. I could easliy drive it by starting in 2nd and using 1st like a granny gear while 6th gear would get me a combined 18 mpg after the lift & tires. With 2.5" of lift, 31" mud terrains, and an Aussie in the back it was a very capable jeep. The KJ platform is roughly twice as stiff as an XJ and the roof structure is much safer in case of a roll over. A buddy we had to rescue from a roll over in a river that left him underwater and on his roof would have died had he been in his XJ instead of his KJ. We have all seen posts of flattened-roof XJ's to see what I am talking about. The V6 3.7 made more HP and equal torque to the I6 4.0 at about the same RPM range. They seemed slower as the KJ is roughly 700 pounds (!) heavier than an XJ. I hate to admit that my KJ outperformed my MJ on 32's with an LSD rear over the same courses.

See this XJ?

This is a different view of my KJ on the same Badlands obstacle. Yes, it made it with no rock stacking, winching, etc....

This pic gives no real indication of how steep this is. That small gravel is slick as heck, too. This is the tallest dune at Badlands if anyone has been there:

Sitting still

Jim's KJ after rolling 3.5 times into 2-3 feet of water and landing on its top. How would an XJ look after that?

I have always had a soft spot for the KJ. Short of lacking in good appearance (personal opinion) they seem to be a very solid platform.

I predict the KJ will soon be the cheap Jeep to modify as XJs are starting to increase in value and yet, are regularly scrapped.

Wow really!? Hope your alright!

More or less , major concussion , will be off work for 6-8 weeks before I'll be able to drive equiptment / vehicle . The way our insurance works on a write- off is basicly all or nothing , They will buy you a near identicle vehicle or cash equivalent or you can bid for it in auction with wrecking yards competing with you . Hopefully I can find a replacement .......I'll keep you posted

Well an XJ would look like this (if I remember right) after 7 rolls at 45 mph. And yes she's fine, she walked away with a broken figure. Sorry for the tinny picture, it was texted to me a couple years ago when I first got my xj. It was my female friend at the time, best friend

I am happy to hear of her good fortune on the injury front. That flattened roof is oh so common in XJ rollovers ( and probably our MJ's, too, I just lack evidence) and usually occurs during the first roll or two. Then as long was your body is below the beltline after the failure you have the stronger portion of the body protecting you. Imagine being tightly strapped to a high-back bucket as that roof caved... If the roof bent you back or didn't bend you at all and you took the full force of the collapse...

True, true all of which you said I agree with.

But we can't compare the two like that, apples to apples...you said the libby rolled into 2-3 of water so I'm going to assume it happened offroading, correct?...which is generally at slower speeds..so I bet if he rolled his libby on a corner going 45 mph I highly doubt the roof wouldnt have flatted out like it is with the XJ.

.

That right there is the best argument I have seen and heard for installing  some kind of rollover protection.

My brother's 02 after it rolled twice at 35+ MPH

How it looked before the rollover

He has epillepsy, and had a seizure (degrading condition, now he no longer drives). went down a ditch, came out of it, up over the road, endo, roll twice over the right front to back rear quarter, landed on the side.

Cab was perfectly square. it bent the driver front A pillar section of the door, but left the cab alone. I took measurements off of the new body for it, all 5 doors still opened correctly. Technically it just needed both quarter panels, both front doors (wrecked skins) some body work on rear doors to put the handles back out, a new passenger front inner fender, bumper support, hood, front clip. But we found a Limited and swapped everything over, motor and all.

These things are tough.
