Difference Between An Xj And A Mj

Was looking at a red MJ that used to be very nice looking,

Now?...well....not so much any more....

Difference between an XJ and a MJ is that an XJ could, and should be thrashed because it is replaceable.

An MJ should be built and wheeled taking into consideration its rarity and value. (Not easily replaced)

My 2 MJs are built as a labor of love, would never thrash or abuse them.

I plan on never selling them...

my 2c...

I have one of each.  My XJ is built and offroaded, but mainly my DD.  I would never trash it.  I can still enjoy rock crawling but I know my boundaries in it.  My MJ on the other hand, will remain stock other than a 4.0L/AX-15 swap.  It will become my new DD and keep up to look a nice as I can possibly make it (if the wife doesn't whine too much lol).

I don't think XJs should be used strictly as a parts bin for an MJ, though.  I will say this much, however, one of the reasons I sought out an MJ over a Toyota or Nissan pickup, besides MJs just being kickass, is that I can find most parts I need from an XJ in the scrap yard.  At least everything from the front seats on forward.

I'll be "that guy". I prefer my XJ over a MJ. My XJ is a great DD and still capable off road.

Now hear me out before you think I'm anti MJ.

XJ had way more options from the factory. From base model seats to electric leather seats. More interior options. The tail lights are cheap and available everywhere. Stock roof rack (or what ever you want to call it). More XJs came with 4WD. More engine/transmission combinations. Way more aftermarket support too. Oh they were made for 17 years not 6 years.

Now MJs have some benefits too. Truck bed obviously. Light weight. High ground clearance for a small truck. Last real Jeep truck. Different bed lengths.

There are some good similarities too. Swappable parts such as engine/transmissions and axles. Front clips are swappable. Wheels and tires are the same or will swap. Most parts are pretty cheap and easy to find. They are still Jeeps made mostly out of metal, unlike more modern vehicles.

My MJ will never be wheeled in the sense that most of us usually do, my reasons for this being 1. it's my DD and something that has been in the family since the showroom, 2. it's the only surviving one like it in the world to my knowledge, and 3. the general condition of everything is very good. If I ever want to thrash something I'll get an XJ.

If I could afford a second vehicle or had somewhere to put it I'd grab an XJ because I still wouldn't be able to afford a 4dr JK and they make better people carriers than an MJ. But my MJ will always be my preference for when it's just me. I'll never do any hard wheeling in it, even if I am planning on lifting it and putting rocker guards and maybe off-road bumpers on it. I do those things because that is my preference over sitting low to the ground and I like the looks. I'd love to stick with stock bumpers, but both of mine are bent up some and factory rear ones are hard to find. I mean I can't even find a drivers side end cap. I could just replace the front bumper, but mine is chrome and not sure just how easy a good one of those would be to find compared to painted ones. No matter what though the MJ is the best little truck ever to be offered if you ask me. It's got looks, tons of power if it's a 4.0L (even the 2.5 was better than some engines offered in other small trucks), and very capable off-road even if 2wd.

XJs are plentiful now but they will dry up eventually.

I Have 3 EXPs which are pretty rare but they share parts with the Escort so parts were always easy to find, nowdays alot of the early Escorts have been cycled through the wrecking yards and are gone.

Everyday more MJs and XJs are being scrapped so eventually there will be a day that you won't find either in the junkyards.

One of the things I would do if I won an offensive amount of money would be to build several huge warehouses, then scour the countryside and CL for all those poor XJs and MJs that aren't being driven/cared for, and house them away safely.
