airspeed
One of the biggest complaints I had with the Comanche is you put anything in the back and it will drop. Well I think I found the solution. Rockauto $62 delivered. These shocks gave my truck about 3/4" of lift. They ride is SMOOTH, no bounce. When I sit on the back of the tailgate the truck will drop about 1/4". Blue88Comanche
was the ride height stock to begin with?
Eagle
Advanced Auto sells Monroe, you should be able to look them up there. Not Auto Zone or Pep Boys -- they sell Gabriel. Gabriels are also excellent shocks, but I don't think they have a coil-over load-carrying shock.
mvusse
Gabriel does have adjustable air shocks that can handle up to 1000 extra pounds, though. But they require some plumbing and an air compressor.
54bobby
i don't see these shocks listed in rocks catalog. pt#???
airspeed
The Monroe p/n is 58497. Why they don't cross this p/n over to the Comanche, I don't know. They have the 5/8" loop fittings on both ends, it must have something to do with the min - max travel dimensions.
92tanMJ
was the ride height stock to begin with? What he said ^ The Monroe p/n is 58497. Because that would look at perfect with 3/4" in the rear and 2" lift in the front. Let alone a stiffer rear because mine droops why down with me just sitting in it lol
HOrnbrod
Travel for this shock is: Extended Length = 23.375"Compressed Length = 14.000" That's about perfect for rear MJ shocks with a 1"-3" lift.
54bobby
so, this is a direct bolt on shock for a stock ride hight manche correct?
HOrnbrod
Yes, it will work just fine. I might just try a pair myself. the rear Bilsteins I have on now are too stiff.
airspeed
Yes I had stock ride height to start with. I had a heck of a time trying to install them. I jacked the truck up by the rear differential and took the old shocks out. Put the new shock on the top pin and thought how on earth will I ever compress this shock to mount on the lower pin. I felt like a fool for about 15 minutes then I lifted the truck from the frame and let the axle hang down, they went right on. Here is the data from the Monroe application guide. 58497 L1 L1 14.000 23.375 9.375 V/R P829

ParadiseMJ
I bought these, installed today. I measured before and then measured after. When I lowered the truck, it appeared that they lifted the rear about 1.5". Then I got up on the bumper and jumped up and down on it several times. Measured again, and it sat at only about 1/2" higher than originally. So took it for a ride. Shocks felt firm, but not hard, nice actually. Much better than the Gabriel Ultras I had on there (only about 2,500 miles old) Took it down one of the bumpiest streets around and they worked well, not nearly as bouncy. Parked it right back in the driveway and measured again...the final height was more like 5/8", which is fine, I wasn't looking to boost it, we'll see what happens when I go get a load of wood, see if they really "level" the load. So far, so good. PLUS, most importantly...they LOOK cool.
GirsMJ86
Getting ready to order all new shocks for my rig and I'm going to run these on the rear, but not sure what to run up front. Not looking to spend a lot, $62 for the pair was one reason I like these as well as them being black. The rig is mostly just driven on the road and is stock height. So what is everyone here using up front?
Automan2164
If you are putting the SensaTrac load levelers on the back, I would think that putting regular SensaTracs on the front would make sense. I just put all new SensaTracs on the XJ after a lot of research. Seems that people like them for what they are, a cheaper stock replacement that helps the ride a bit without blowing the bank. If I would have had a bit more scratch, I would have gone OME because I plan to lift it at some point, but for now, the Monroe's work fine. Rock auto has a rebate when you buy Monroe shocks also... My purchase of four got me $30 back, which means one shock was free. Oh, and Monroe's are lifetime replacement IIRC. Rob
neohic
Bringing this one back! So... I ordered a set of these for my '91. Anyone else run these on their LWB? Mine come in contact with the seam on the fuel tank... which is probably bad.
