Kubota Diesel Xj On Diesel Bombers

You watching this one, Jim? Guy is dropping a v2203 Kubota in his Cherokee. Kinda neat, I think.

I am now. Got a Massey Ferguson tractor I thought about using but the weight got me worried. I think it weighs as much as a MJ does. I would really like to find a Mercedes Benz. Can't help but think they could be made to work. Would consider any diesel from an automobile.

Thats what the bed is for Jim.   :D

Use the flywheel to drive the rear axle. Use the front pulley to drive the front axle. By jove. I believe we're onto something here.

that guy needs to seriously rethink using a peugot.

You noticed that too, huh? I agree.  That diesel will rip that frenchy to shreds.

First thing I noticed actually.

second thing was that there's no provision for an alternator, and that kubotas use generators. it will be interesting to see how he solves that....will need an alternator that is internally regulated.

yea I know that. What are the tq numbers? all I could find was hp numbers. on diesels tq is usually 2 to 3 times the hp numbers right? that would put it at 100-150 ft lbs still... thats lower than the 4.0...

The other problem is that those engines (any small diesel) are designed to be bolted to a drive train that has 12 gears forward (High Medium Low, 1-4) and 3 revers. IDK about this. If it were me I would have beefed up everything around it and gone with a cummins 4bt  :brows:

Good plan, but those arent exactly easy to find and if you do they aint cheap.

haha i hear you can just get a 6bt and cut two off with a port-a-ban, lol :rotf:   Or just make the 6bt fit :brows:

Its a novel idea, but even the turbo 4cyl kubotas don't come close to meeting the 4.0's hp or torque figures.  They're a decent replacement in early flatfender jeeps as they offer only marginal gains over the WWII L head and are about the same size and weight.  3 cyl non turbos don't offer anything more and rev to a max of about 2.5K rpm, 4cyl turbos rev about the same but offer about 150 lbs of torque, still its nothing close to a 4.0L....not good if you want to drive on the highway.... Its not a new swap.  Plenty of Ranger and S10 folks have done it,,,but for a cherokee, I just don't see what he's gaining.

I think a comanche would sh*t a brick if you tried to stuff a 6bt under the hood.   :laughin:  As awesome as it would be, those things weigh about as much as the whole truck. I got to see a bare block a while back at a machine shop, thing was massive.

MPG maybe? But if the TQ figures are that bad, he will probably stay the same if not lose mpg.

MPG maybe at slower non-highway speeds, but I'm still skeptical, especially considering the cost of diesel over gas.  Just basing my opinion on Kubota's specs from their website...http://www.kubotaengine.com/products/03m/v2203_m_e3.html.

Plenty of 4BT and Mercedes diesel swaps out there.  Kudos to the guy for trying something new, although I think he picked an engine that is a bit underpowered.  Might be able to squeeze a lot more out of it with a bigger turbo and more fuel, but I'm not sure how well those engines are built.

I plan on transplanting a diesels into one of my MJs shells this summer.  I'll be using a Japanese-imported Isuzu.
