My Idea

Recommended Posts

I would start with a 4.0, and add a turbo to it if you really want that.

Currently in the process of fitting a D60 under the front. Not as simple as it seemed. Thought about a 14b in the rear, but too big and don't want to spend the money to shave it. Opting for a Sterling 10.25" instead.

yes... but to get that much out of it, you need to completely rebuild the thing. You're effectively doubling the output with those numbers. The original internals could support a mild turbo, maybe seven or eight psi at the most (and that's really pushing it), which might net you an extra 30-40hp, but to get 200 at the wheels, you're looking at more like 20psi. Don't expect that to last too long before kaboom.

I can see both sides of the coin here as i build high HP imports. It would be a cool thing to have, but the problem is i don't know how strong or efficient this 2.5 is. To get good solid numbers from it, is going to be quite a learning curve. What cam to match the chambers it has, and what rods can you get that will withstand triple the stock stress load.

I think for wheeling and crawling youd prob be better off with a 4.0. Since it IS the displacement your attempting to create by putting a turbo on the little 2.5.

When you need the torque and that big crank to bump something or to crawl up a steep @$$ rock bed at 1500-2000 rpm, you won't have it. Youll have a little gutless 2.5 that only makes a decent number when its on boost. So you will have to mash on the thing all the time and that doesnt work well in crawling. Rock bouncing and mud pits sure.

So it depends on what you expect from this thing.

With tons and 39.5s I'm gonna guess granite grinder.

So id pop in a JY 4.0, or if you live in a no smog county and have time, put an LS1 in it.

But a turbo 2.5, too many IFs. Bunch of damn crap under the hood to come loose and go wrong, boost pipes and intercooler everywhere, building the engine so it can handle the HP, getting good management and injectors, then a clutch to hold it all, building wiring harness for custom management (none of this will smog anyways) and finally having a tuner who actually knows what they are doing, to tune this little sucker.

Hope this helps.

I think just the challenge, fun, of building an engine like that would be enough. Every time a discussion on 4 cylinder racing engines comes up I remember the old Indy Offenhausers'. Just hearing one of them scream past and I would have to go change my drawers. A man takes a 500CI engine, gets 500HP at the rear wheels. Big deal. A man takes 150ci engine and gets 500hp at the rear wheels, BIG DEAL!

thats kinda what I'm after cuz I'm kinda a big deal B)

i do have a 98 zj that i recently blew a tranny in so when the time comes and the lil 2.5 does perhaps get blown up i would be able to swap it in

from what one of the local comanche enthusiast said that the 2.5 motor in the jeep is the same as the turbo'd 2.5 shadow or daytona which is where this idea was born

anybody know if this is true or not?
