gogmorgo
Well, I don't know that the crack was from a rock. The light was burnt out, and I didn't notice it until after I swapped it out. Judging by how much dust was in the light itself, it could have been years since it happened.
Eagle
Here is my one owner 1988 CHIEF. Bucket seats, PS,PB, AC, fog lites, cargo lite, Dana 30 and 44, 5 speed manual, 4WD, 231, under hood lite, tow hooks, tilt steering wheel and CRUISE CONTROL, console, leather wrapped steering wheel, plus some stuff I'm sure I forgot. My 1988 Chief has a cloth bench seat and a non-leather 3-spoke steering wheel. No cargo light, no Dana 44 rear axle. No tilt wheel, no cruise. All those things were options. The tow hooks were part of the off-road option package.
cruiser54
Did those grills over the headlights come with? My '91's got them, and I've always wondered about them. It's the first time I've noticed them on another MJ. No.
desertmike
wow Hope i'm not in the flame zone. Just trying to help out on the model id. This was a left over 1988 that I bought in the spring of 1989 well before the internet. I'll post some pics of the interior tomorrow
Eagle
No flaming involved, but you cannot identify the model by the options, because in the AMC days everything was optional and available on just about every model. Post the VIN and that should tell us what model you have.
Clay Perrine
I have a question for the experts. One of my pet peeves with my 88 Pioneer is the gauges. It has all the gauges, but no tach, and the speedo is a 85 mph one. Which gauge set would get me a tach and a speedo with a higher number? Thanks!
mvusse
Start by looking at Cherokees from 88 through 90 in a junk yard for a cluster with a tach. IIRC, a higher limit speedometer would only have been available with the 91 and newer police package Cherokee, and these are not compatible with your 88. gogmorgo
How swappable would a metric speedometer be? My '91 goes to 200km/h (~120mph), and the few of the Renix ones I've seen online go to 180km/h (~110mph).
'87 fuel-miser
my 2.8 '86 xj had 230,000 on it ... ran like a clock , used no oil and aways passed emissions ... guess you either have good luck with 'em or not ! :MJ 1:
Harley
My 86 has over 255,000 on the 2.5 and other than the cheap junk parts that oreilly auto sells, it hasnt failed me one bit.

The tachometer was optional on the Pioneer and Chief (I know, because I bought the option when I special ordered my '88 XJ Pioneer) and standard on the Limited. They ALL had the 85 MPH speedometer. The ONLY speedo that went higher was the one used in XJs that were ordered by police departments. Good luck finding one of those.
'87 fuel-miser
those headlight / stone guards were made by rally ... ( maybe others) i have them on my mj/xj , available either black or chrome . they show up on ebay now and then :MJ 1:

No tilt wheel, no cruise. All those things were options. The tow hooks were part of the off-road option package. I agree with Eagle. My Chief did have a cloth bench (and still does but it is hanging on a wall in the garage), non-leather 3 spoke steering wheel and no cargo light. It has a dana44 but only because it was an option. I vaguely recall the off road package but mine didnt have it (skid plates were part of it if I recall correctly). But it had factory tow hooks but as a stand alone option and no tilt or cruise. desertmike
Thanks for the comments. This one also has skid plates and a block heater. Whoever ordered this one must have ordered just about everything. here's a pic of the dusty interior. If you did;nt get a tach what was in that space? mvusse
Without the tach that spot would have a ginormous fuel gauge.
Lewt2007
tow hooks were also dealer installed not necessarily part of the off road package i have it but don't have the tow hooks they used a different bumper bracket that they mounted to besides the standard bumper bracket that most xj/mjs had
HOrnbrod
Agree , a great looking and well equipped truck desertmike. I don't see any power (windows, mirrors, locks, antenna, etc.) options though. I've seen a few MJs with factory power windows, but that's about it. What power options were offered, and were they just for the elite trim levels, or available for any MJ?
cruiser54
IIRC, only power windows and locks were available as an option.

Tempus_Fugit
Here is the highest option MJ I have seen. I sold it 4 years ago and regret it. It now resides in MD I think. Laredo, 4.0, 5 spd, AC, PW, PL, AC, CC, tilt, buckets, console, gauges, wheels, cargo light, and courtesy lights, etc. I removed the roll bar and brush guard before the repaint because I doubted they were original, I may have been wrong about that. HOrnbrod
Yep, that was a keeper for sure. And yes, the roll bar and brush guard were not factory original.
Minuit
 Pretty truck. Always liked the way that color looks with the exterior options.
glundblad
I think you did the right thing by yanking that roll bar. It was definately not factory. But selling it? That is another story.... :(
