Spare tire size

Recommended Posts

Will a 255/75-17 tire fit in the spare space under the bed?

That's about a 32" diameter tire. I couldn't fit a 31" tire under mine. So I'd say it won't fit.

Odd. I carried a 31x10.50-15 under my '88 shortbed for several years. It fit fine, but I don't think anything larger would fit.

I have to edit this because I remember why it wouldn't fit when I tried to mount a 31" spare years ago. It is because of the left side dual exhaust pipe - there was not enough clearance unless I wanted a toasty spare. I do have a 30" spare mounted and that's the largest I could get in there w/o touching the pipe. Figured it would get me home.

For a while, I had a 245/75/16 tire under there. I too was concerned about the weight of the tire and wheel snapping the cable. So once I got it cranked up, I ran a couple of ratchet straps through the holes in the wheel and around the "X" part of the truck frame.

I also got a 33x12.50x15 wheel and tire up there. It did come really close to the tailpipe and it hung down awfully low. Too low for fourwheeling.

think.gif Been meaning to ask this same question as well. Glad to know I can finally put my 235/75/15 in the stock position rather than carrying it like a fool in the bed.

Not to :hijack: but can anyone tell me what I'm missing under here from the stock mount, or anything you guys would reccomend I upgrade while messing around with it?

Sadly, I noticed that the top bolts connecting the U mount to the crossmember are suffering from severe rust it seems. :( PO snapped the head of the left one off, and I wouldn't doubt the right side would come off any easier. Of all the places my almost rust free truck has to have rust.... :fs1:

I had a 235/70/16 under the bed and the extra tension it took to keep it up due to the additional weight destroyed the bushing on the hook at the end of the cable that goes through the hole in the wheel to keep it up. I now have the compact spare back underneath.
