This really grinds my gears

Was away this weekend visiting my GF in MD. I leave all of my vehicles down at my shop and my Dad knows where the keys are. He's been using my '92MJ when I'm away - doesn't bother me considering he's my father and has given me quite a lot over the years. Come down to my shop this morning to find this:

Well, that certainly wasn't there when I left for the weekend. I asked him what he hit and when he planned on telling me about it. Of course, he claims to know nothing about it, but it was very obvious that the truck was moved over the weekend, so unless someone stole my truck, took it for a joyride, and returned it to my shop, I'm not quite sure how else this could have happened. Definitely looks like he side swiped something.

The truck may not be in amazing condition and it may have dents/dings all over it, but the passenger door and front fender were both cherry before this - guess I just need to add it to my list of things to repair before I get the truck repainted next year. I'm not a body guy at all and I leave this stuff to the pros, which is going to be $$$.

Probably looks like normal "trail rash" to most of you guys, but my intention with this truck was to restore it and make it look new again...

Arg.

Why not just replace the panels?

Because the likelihood of me finding a white XJ door in a junkyard that isn't dented and scratched to all hell is slim. The fact that there is are two big scratches and dents in my door does not bother me (it kind of flows with the rest of the truck), it's the fact that whoever did it has not fessed up, taken responsibility, and offered to do something about it.

ya know what grinds my gears? bad synchros.

sorry, had to do it. :D

I would hunt down replacement parts. but then, the dent in my dakota where that corvette hit my bed was repaired and looks factory even 6 years later.

Yeah, I hear ya - nothing worse that someone who won't fess up to something they did.

At least it wasn't the bed. :dunno:

I may not have noticed if it was on the bed. This truck was definitely used as a true "work truck" during its life. There are lots of little dings all over the bed rails. My topper covers some of them up, but there are still quite a few there.

Those dents are repairable. Get some one knows what they're doing and not a 'hacker'.

Once steel is stretched like that its a pain to work with. That top dent is what I see being a pain, the lower one is low so its not going to show as badly. Its also very close to the end of the panel and the lower body line.

The top dent is on a flatter portion of the door. Flat panels are the most PITA to work out. Add to the fact that you can't easily get to the backside of the panel with a hammer and you're looking at some time into that repair. You'll be chasing the stretched steel all over and putting lots of time into applying and sanding off fiberglass. What is time worth to you? I'd just look into another door or a new skin. Either choice is way less time consuming.

Fender is repairable for sure.

I'm retired. I do things to be doing them. Not because I have to. I have 4 doors and fenders , same color that will swap right up and take less than a couple hours to do it. I would still remove the door, place it on the bench and spend a week working it out rather than swap. I realize not every body is in my position. Just stating an opinion, mine.

But you did hit the nail on the head. What's your time worth.

$146/hr. At least that's what my company charges clients for my consulting services. Wish I got even a third of that...

Anyway, my time is valuable right now and this fix is waaaaaay way down on the list of priorities. I'm going to be moving to Maryland sometime in the near future and I have 4,000 other things that need to get done before I think about a couple scratches on my door and fender. The intent of this thread was not to pry for ideas on how to fix the problems - I know what needs to be done. I was just stating how irritated I was that no one has taken responsibility and attempted to make amends.

In an effort to keep this thread on track, reply with something that really grinds your gears (and it can't be bad synchros...Pete already said that).

I hate drivers who will tailgate you and then after you move over to let them pass, they just sit in your blind spot and refuse to pass. 30 seconds ago, you were about to ram my vehicle, but once I give you the courtesy of passing, you decide to sit in the most dangerous spot possible. Argh.

Three things on my list of gear grinds:

-people not shutting cabinets in the kitchen after retrieving a cup/plate/whatever. :fs2:

-bicyclists that ride in packs three wide like its the tour-de-france that clog up an entire lane of a two lane road despite having their own lane to ride in. :fs1:

-coming out of a store only to find the car next to you parked less than a foot from your drivers side door while you were inside, causing you to have to climb in from the passenger side.

if you're having the thing painted, what does the color of the door matter?

get a door of any color, spray bomb it with duplicolor white, after liberally scuffing it, and call it good until you get a proper paint job. no body work, no tears.

it sucks that your father (allegedly) did that. I've had a few similar things happen, but everyone has always owned up to it.

Yep, this is the one that is near the top of my list. I could pull into an empty 40 acre parking lot and park, the only one in the lot. Come out of the store and there are vehicles left-right-fore and aft parked all around me close as they can get. The rest of the lot is still empty. :headpop:

I guess it's due to the herding instinct most people have. :dunno:

Other things that grind my gears:

1. People who point at their wrist while asking for the time. I know where my watch is. :fs2: Do I point at my crotch when I ask where the bathroom is?

2. People in the supermarket check out line who wait until their entire bill is rung up before they begin writing their check.

3. When a cop pulls you over and then asks if you know how fast you were going. I mean, doesn't this clown have a speedgun? This actually happened last Saturday, a local cop pulled me over for doing 55 in a 35 MPH zone. He asks me the above; I said my speedo read 40MPH. Then I asked him that since I had just had larger tires installed (which I did), would that make my speedo read high? He puffs all up and says it shore will. You have to change the gear to calibrate your speedometer. Playing the fool I told him I didn't know that and thanked him for telling me. He let me go with the promise I'd get 'er done Monday.

Pretty sure that if they get you to admit guilt right away, its an open and shut case - makes their job easier.

I've done pretty much the exact same thing, although I wasn't doing 20 over.

This could be a whole new thread. Smart @$$ answers when cops ask dumb questions.

Cop; Know why I stopped ya?

You: What? You forgot already?

Cop: Know why I stopped ya?

You: You were lonely and wanted some one to talk to?

I actually pulled that one on a Colorado state trooper. I was going 15 over. He looked at me trying to make up his mind if I was a smart @$$ or just trying to be funny. He decided I was the latter and told me to hold it down and went back to his car.

Cop: You know how fast you were going?

You: I sure do. She sure moves out doesn't she?

Next?

A lot of things about people who list vehicles on Craigslist really grind my gears. Here's a couple:

1) Please do not list your vehicle as a Jeep Cherokee if it's actually a GRAND Cherokee. There's a difference. Figure it out.

2) I hate sellers who state, "WILL NOT RESPOND TO E-MAILS." I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but e-mail is a mainstream form of communication - use it. You had to enter an e-mail address in when you posted your Craigslist ad so I know you have one. Is it REALLY that much of an inconvenience to check it? Some of us can't make personal phone calls at work and have to rely on other forms of communication (like E-MAIL) to get in contact with you.

There are a whole lot more things I hate about Craigslist sellers - like the ones who post stuff for sale, but have absolutely no ambition to put forth any effort to get a deal made - but I'll stop here for today.

Like learn how to ^&$)ing spell, especially when the name of what you're selling is BADGED ON THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE.

Also, picture or I don't care. Most things can be sold by just a description, but if you're selling a vehicle, put up a freaking picture.

My Craiglists search consists of finding ANY of the following words, "comanche, commanche, commanchee, camanche, cammanche, cammanchee"

Half the reason I want to e-mail people instead of calling is because I want them to send me a picture (or more, higher resolution pictures). There is really no sense in wasting each other's time if the vehicle is not something I want. A good picture or two can usually tell me within seconds if the vehicle is worth pursuing or not.

+1 :fs1: The seller of this bike has just lost another possible buyer!

Saying "I don't do email" is as bad as the luddites who say "I don't do text".
