Refurbishing the Fuel Sender
bigalpha replied to Akula69's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
The sender in my MJ is structurally fine, but the potentiometer is borked (ohmed out wrong). Are the potentiometers replaceable? -
I don't understand what's going on here:
-
The sender in my 88 LWB is bad and I have a lead on a pump assembly from an 89 SWB. From what I understand, the SWB sender should work on my LWB tank because the tank has the same depth and width but a different length. Is this correct? Also, do any RENIX MJ senders work in any RENIX MJ tank?
-
Anyone with any ideas on these two things?
-
 I don't know why I was thinking 13 gallons. So now that my sender is borked, will my gauge still be accurate, only on a different scale?
-
The LWB trucks had a 13 and a 22 gallon tank, right?
-
Also, I can't seem to find the thread where someone mated an XJ and MJ unit.
-
My sender is bad - I pulled it and tested the float. It ranges from 0-57 ohms. Now, it reads 3/4 as a full tank. Will the gauge still work properly, just on a different scale? Also, when filling the tank, gasoline will bubble out the filler tube and spill down the truck instead of kicking off the dispenser nozzle. I assume that there is something wrong with the venting of the gas tank. Is there a common problem I can look at? Will I have to drop the tank to troubleshoot this?

I'll probably pass out if my wife tells me she's pregnant. Vomiting is a given as well. I will spend 9 months doing as much baby/kid research as possible. There is a lot of very interesting research into baby development.

I know some of you collect these things: http://nashville.craigslist.org/clt/2783853907.html

Is it too late?! Yeah, those seats look freaking nice.

I tested my gauge by disco'ing the connector at the pump. The needle swept all the way to F (and past it). I then jumped the ground and violet wires and the needle then swept over to E (and past it). There is no corrosion on the connector and no obvious broken wires. I plugged it all back together and the needle then went back to where it was before disco'ing the connector. It seems that when I fill the tank, the needle moves to the halfway point. I don't recall this happening before I swapped my gauge cluster.
-
So if you unplug the connector and the needle doesn't sweep to Full, then ground to the connector is bad?

I have a D35 on my 88, 2WD. I am unsure on the brake shoe size on the rear. I was going to redo all the hardware and adjust the shoes but wasn't sure what size they were. From Advance Auto Part: 7080 Drum Brake Hardware Kit; Rear; w/10 x 2-1/2" Brake; 1 Required or Part: 7064 Drum Brake Hardware Kit; Rear; w/10 x 1-3/4" Brake; 1 Required Thanks. Edit: nevermind, I searched better and found: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=23179&p=238958

I got the retainer out but, for the life of me, couldn't get the 96 booster open.
-
How does the clip come out while it's together? I have an older booster I'm disassembling but can't figure out how to remove the clip without bashing the whole assembly to pieces.
-
Not without removing them from the truck. The speakers work just fine. Until they both, simultaneously cut out, that is.
-
I already re-did the wiring. They are most definitely not touching the door and aren't exposed.
-
The speedometer is caliberated by the rotation of the drive shaft (speedometer cable comes out of the side of the transmission). Change the size of the tires or the diff gearing and the vehicle moves different distances on the rotation of the drive shaft. Hmm, interesting, thanks. I didn't realize that it was reading the DS.
-
Mine did this recently when I hit a bump. Both speakers went out simultaneously but the HU was working just fine. Hit another bump and the speakers came back on. I pulled the HU out and couldn't replicate the problem with the wiring harness.
-
Why is this? The radius of the tires didn't change if you only swapped gears.

Comanche of the month, Aug 2011 --- PETE M's 1988
bigalpha replied to Automan2164's topic in Comanche of the Month (MJOTM)
Pete, do you have any more details on those cool mini-sunroofs you put in? Also, I like what you did with the space above the visors. Did you alter that space any to fit those things in there? I don't have a headliner and that looks like a good space for things. -
Yes, but 2wd and 4wd cables are not the same length. 2.5 cables may also be different lengths, and there's also the differences between cruise and non-cruise cables. You're looking at 4-8 different cables, so try to get as close as you can when you get a replacement. I definitely pulled a cabled from a similarly equipped XJ (2WD, AW4, 4.0L).
