alleydog
no outage here in northeast iowa, but we dodged the whole storm.I'v had a generator for almost 25 years, and only used it for 1 hour because of outage, but I used it alot for other stuff, like camping and racing ang getting parts off at the junkyard. If youre gonna use it near people, get a Honda, mine has a briggs on it and it's loud as he.. well you know!
Burls
Is there a place that sells dry ice close? Load up the top of the freezer with a few lbs of dry ice. Should keep it below freezing.
500 MJ
Lost power here from 7:30 to 11. VERY windy at the beginning of the storm. Took down lots of trees in Evansville, I guess Edgerton got it pretty bad too. I was watching all the old growth ones around the house sway back and forth. Neighbor had a younger tree fall, but everything here stayed up. Maple leaves and branches all over the yard though. We've got a Honda we use at work for bridge jobs. Works great and we put it through the paces often.
HOrnbrod
9 full hours? That's terrible. Last tornado bout here we lost power for a full week. With that being said, if you're complaining about a 9 hour outage you better invest in a generator. You're not in an tornado prone area, but having a generator in the places I've lived in the past and present, I consider it mandatory. Don't wait until some freak of nature comes rolling in causing a massive power outage unless you want to pay X3 what the generator is worth. It's cheap insurance. I picked up a 6.5K generator from Harbor Freight a few years ago for $450 on sale with a quiet 14HP Robin/Subaru engine pictured below. It handles everything in the house except the heat pumps and hot water heaters. It's been a lifesaver, and as posted, they can be used for many other things. Don't wait until the crap hits the fan. terrawombat
Seems like everywhere in the continental US is tornado prone this year. Had one touch down 20 miles north of me a couple weeks ago and another ripped through CT around the same time. Soon we'll start having earthquakes... jimoshel
I have a portable welder with 110-220 outlets I use. The first couple years here we had 4 outages. I would drag the welder out of the shop and hook it up to the main breaker circuit. The 4th time I did that I just left it there rather than drag it back to the shop. Haven't had an outage since. almost 5 years. Thinking about moving it back to the shop but why tempt fate?

I'm sorry that you put hoes before bros, and don't let $#!& just brush off your shoulder.

knever3
Ok, back on topic. I have lost power about 6-10 times this spring. It started when I saw the lights dim and looked outside and saw the neighbors trees arcing against the wires. Then sure enough I saw a Consumers Energy truck roll by and then a Davey tree service cut the tree and left a pile of branches on the ground. Since the house was vacant it was up to me to clean up the mess. :fs1: So after that I noticed the insulation on the wiring was almost gone everywhere because of the age of the wire. I lost power the other night and heard a loud buzzing three times near the house as the air conditioner flickered everytime the lightning striked 3 times total. Then I was in the dark for I don't know how long since I fell asleep. About a week before the wind was blowing with no rain even and the power went out. This is about the last straw, without a generator and a sump pump backup and working 12 hour days I can't afford to let this go much longer. Should I call the power company and prod them to replace the power wires and the transformer?
