ChiefJosh
Does anybody know where I can come up with a pre-made mandrel tailpipe? Is there any chance that the one that Rusty's offers for the XJ will work? Someone else on NAXJA suggested a pipe from an early 90's Dakota, any thoughts? Thanks ahead of time-

Most likely they won't have it on stock and will have to order it. I got the tailpipe for my Comanche at Napa and they had to order it.
ChiefJosh
I guess I'm looking for an upgrade from the stock pipe. The Rusty's pipe is the mandrel bent 2 1/2" pipe, and that is what I'd like to find, or something similar.
Eagle
I guess I'm looking for an upgrade from the stock pipe. The Rusty's pipe is the mandrel bent 2 1/2" pipe, and that is what I'd like to find, or something similar. I'll start by asking (a) why do you want to go 2-1/2" and (B) what makes you think that's an "upgrade"? A number of years ago my brother managed a muffler shop. When the original exhaust on my '88 Cherokee went, I took it to him to put in a replacement. He did a cat-back -- muffler and tailpipe. He talked me into a 2-1/2" turbo muffler and a 2-1/2" tailpipe. (The catalytic converter was already 2-1/2", if you didn't know that). The result was more noise, a significant drop in low end torque (there was a bit more horsepower above maybe 4,000 RPM, but with a 4.0L 5-speed I never get over 3,000 RPM for shifting, and cruise in 5th gear is under 2,000 RPM), and a loss of 2 to 3 miles per gallon on fuel efficiency. Having your 2-1/2" exhaust mandrel bent will only make these effects more significant. I don't regard this as an "upgrade" in any way. By the time that tailpipe and muffler rusted out I was just waiting for the day I could justify tossing them and going back to a stock system. I didn't quite "hate" that system ... but I sure didn't like it.

The parts store pipes will be stock diameter and they aren't mandrel bent.
Druville
id check with your local exhaust shops. There is a place here in town with a mandrel bender, that will just make up an exhaust, any way you want. might be your only real option.
comancheman
this is kind of a thread jack, but not really. i was considering putting a flowmaster 40 series on my mj with the cat and stock diameter tubing. after reading this thread I'm thinkin i will lose power. anyone have expierience with this in the past? feerocknok
My 2.5L has press bent 2.5" exhuast :hmm: . I don't see with keeping a cat and good driving habits there being an issue with mandrel bent cat-back, or muffler-back exhaust.
Kenosha Warrior
Ive been running the last week with my exhaust dumping from my ailing cat welded to a 3" piece of exhaust pipe clamped to my manifold. No muffler. The pipe is 4" dia (off a 454 chev blazer tailpipe) Loud as hell, but I don't see any power reduction, low end power loss, ect. then again, its a 2.5l not a 4.
pingpong
Run the reuglar exhaust up to the cat.. a short length of straight tubing.. then a glass pack and a turn down. Inexpensive.. can be installed by you, and if you wheel, it is cheap to fix. I also agree with Eagle 100% that "upgrading" your exhaust to something that big is a waste of your money. I wish I owned an exhaust shop so I could "upgrade" everyones truck. Around here ppl are replacing their single 3.5" on the chevy to a dual with 2.25" :hmm: for some reason I don't think it works to good.. cause I see a bunch of them switching back to stock parts :D

ChiefJosh
I see what you guys are saying if I keep everything else stock, but I have plans to do some upgrades on the intake side of things as well. This isn't just a "I-wanna-put-a-Flowmaster-and-3"-pipe-on-'cause-I-want-it-to-sound-cool" idea. I want it to flow well, and with the increase of air coming in, I want to make it easier for that air to flow out. What other performance upgrades are avaliable for the Renix setup? Cold air intake, bored out throttle body, different injectors, cam, header, high flow cat, muff, HO intake manifold, electric fans. Anything else I didn't think of? Pete M
Is getting the maximum airflow really all that necessary on engines that rarely get above 5k rpms? :hmm:
Oizarod115
if you keep the 4.0 naturally aspirated and do little bolt ons... theres probably only about 20hp to be found honestly. and lots of it is more work than its worth.
offroader461
i put a 40series flowmaster with a 2.5" exhaust that dump out behind the pass. rear tire and a xj-armor k&n intake and have felt no power loss or torque loss anywhere in the powerband...i have a 4.0L, 5spd 4x4. jeepthing07
I put a Borla exhaust on my 4.0 YJ and it helped allot. the Borla tailpipe is only 2" stock it was 2-1/4.
whatis42
For you who don't like high flow exhaust. Do you think doing stock exhaust set up, but with a Flowmaster for the noise. Yes I'm young but hey I like it but I do not want to loose power. So just wondering what ya all think.
offroader461
if its done correctly you shouldnt lose any power or torque...i wouldnt worry about it too much
