I do not have the OEM tools/jack/etc that came with the truck. How do I get the spare down? What kind and what length of tool do I need to lower it?

you could use a long flat head screwdriver or coat hanger that might work if you bend it out straight. hope that will help

I got all mine at the Pull A Part off a donor Cherokee. Jack, folding crank, and the lug wrench thats about 2 ft long, kinda L shaped, that's flattened on the end for removing hubcaps. That end will fit into the mechanism for lowering the tire. A big screwdriver will suffice.

Thanks for this thread - I don't think I've ever looked specifically to see if there was a spare on my truck. Not to mention, how to get it out in case of emergency, nor the tools I'd need.

I will do all of that today.

So where would the bolt be that yoou use the tire tool to lower it?

If you have a stock bumper it is right above the left hand side of your license plate, it's not really a bolt, it'sm just a smashed piece of pipe designed to turn when you put a crank in it. a regular lug wrench works.

I have an aftermarket bumper which covers the hole, so I have to take my tailgate off to get to the hole. Just stick it in there and crank away.

I used a 3/8" extension of about 8" in length on a socket wrench. Worked rather well as it cleared the license plate (but not trailer hitch ball).

On a related note, will a full size mounted tire (235/75 R15) fit underneath in place of the compact spare? I don't have one to test it on, hence why I'm asking.

I have a 31x10.5 underneath and it fit quite nicely. It hangs down a bit, but nothing that'll get in my way and does not look weird.

It's tight up in there, I saw the "donut" that was there in the JY when I picked the spare holder up (yeah, they had donuts even then), pitiful.

I recommend spraying the HECK out of everything that is supposed to move under there with PB'Laster at least 24 hours before trying to drop it. It took just a minor bit of dinging under mine to get a 33/9.50/15 spare in (to match the rest)
