Cheapest gas tanks???? please look

who has the cheapest gas tanks out there?

 

I'm looking for a new one since mine is surface rusted through on the side.

i found that raybuck has them for 119.99 for comanche 6' bed 18 gal with fuel inj.

Not sure on price but alot of the aftermarket tanks don't have the pan inside the tank. Not sure if the pan is to keep the fuel pump from overheating or if it has other purpose.

 

 

i think the pan is there so that the float for the gauge doesn't jump all over the place....

I got mine at rockauto.com, not a bad deal.

 

Not to hijack, but I put my fuel pump in and am putting the tank back in this weekend. Is there a "wrong" way to put the pump/float apparatus in? The float goes in that pan? I just popped it in there, will the float just end up where it belongs, or did I need to take special care?

it goes in the same way to came out.

 

i changed my fuel pump in my 89 xj while the tank was in the jeep. you can do the MJ the same way as well. the panel is on the side

 

i used a flat head screw driver and a hammer to tap out the lock rung then pulled it out. it was easy

 

 

 

 

 

 

I'm debating on jb welding my tank and undercoating it or to buy a new one. anyone else fix theirs or just replace?

mine is leaking as well, anyone know of any good repairs? I've heard of a coating you can put inside the tank but I do not recall what it is called.

 

 

It's not cost effective to fix a tank for our Jeep. I called Gas Tank Renu locally and they said it starts at around $300! They said they fix tanks that can't be bought aftermarket anymore. I thought it would be cheap, boy was I wrong. I wouldn't fix it by pouring something in there because I feel my injectors are worth more than the gas tank.

 

I bought mine off ebay for $119 I think, it has the interior baffle but the pump doesn't seat into a premade hole in the new tank, it just sits there. I haven't had any problem with the tank so that's my recommendation.

The "Pan" in the tank acts as a reservoir, there are no 'baffles' in the MJ tank, and to keep the pump supplied, the pan does this as the gas is sloshing around in there.

 

The pan is needed for the EFI.

 

Also, the return line drop into the pan.

 

When installing the sending unit, you want to make sure the float arm does not become trapped with the pan, other wise, the sender unit will not function.

 

I think your best bet is RayBucks, plus you can pick up, right Bad_MJ???

:agree: Also I've found that by dropping the drive shaft I can remove, replace the fuel pump without dropping the tank. Most of the tank sealers on the market are primarily for new tank use. Not sealing older, leaking tanks. And for the cost and trouble, just get a new one.

I went to replace the fuel tank on my MJ last night and discovered that the fuel pump assembly (the steel bulkhead bit that clips into the tank, specifically) is so rusty that I am afraid if I touch it, it will break in half. Clearly a new one is needed. Finding a place to buy one though... wow, it's kinda hard. The dealership says it's discontinued and has been for a long time. RockAuto says they have it (Bosch 67328) but it's $350! :eek: and it looks like they are cross referencing the Cherokee one to fit an MJ as well. I am afraid that the baffle/pan/bucket in the bottom of the new tank I got (the spectra SWB one, JP5B or JP4B I forget, it's definitely the right tank though) is in the wrong spot because the spare pump I have for my 96 XJ won't fit in properly, and I am pretty sure all pre-97 XJ tanks are interchangeable. Am I overthinking this? Should I just buy the assembly (amazon has the same one for 200 something) and stop worrying? Has anyone used the Bosch 67328 assembly successfully?

 

For what it's worth, the cheapest I found was the Spectra tank, rockauto has it for a decent price.

Just the pump, or the whole assembly? My problem is that the assembly is so rusted it is on the edge of failure... my pump works great, in fact I drove it to work today. I can find a million people selling the pump but a new bracket/bulkhead/level sender assembly is rather more difficult :(

Be CAREFUL Cherokee sending units do not work in our Comanches.

:fs1: I had the same problem with parts stores around here and they don't listen when you try to tell them that not all cherokee parts are interchangable. :fs1:

The best way I have found is to pick one up on EBAY and make any needed repairs to it before you install it then you have a spare that you can repair then keep in case you need or sell and get at least some if not all your money back.

 

There are places you can get you sending unit rebuilt for as little as $100 or so, at least that is what I have seen. I am in the process of trying to go this route myself, but you know the way money can get sometimes, have new to me sending unit just waiting to get the money to have it rebuilt before I install. If I can find the web site again I will post it on here, or maybe someone else can steer you in the right direction.

 

I also remember seeing at one time, :dunno: maybe not in this club :dunno: , that their was someone who was a member that could rebuild our units, :wall: only saw it once and haven't been to find again :wall: , should have marked when had the chance. :doh:

yeah :( no kidding.

 

The counter guys at the stores near me are actually pretty good, once they realized I needed the whole assembly not just the pump they were like "yeah good luck dude..."

 

I guess I'll take a look through the parts catalogs and see if I can find anything... might hit the junkyard, pull an early model XJ pump assembly and see if it's something I can modify to fit properly.

 

It's just a piece of metal, why does it have to be so hard to find :(
