here's the relatively clean undercarriage, some surface rust but overall clean. i think it may be the original exhaust. I detailed the mp229 the other day to identify and inspect for damage, thats why its so shiny :D

whats funny is the worst looking part of the vehicle is under the hood, my last manche was less rusty than this and that one had a hole in the floor. pretty good considering 24 years though.

hmm crawled under there today, i don't know all the parts of the truck so bear with me. the shiny muffler, unless magnaflow was making mufflers in 86 is not stock, but... the rest of the piping looks original and is welded to some old looking hangers. not sure what was fabbed up there.

also the transmission fluid pan (whats the proper name for that?) had some auto trans fluid seeping, not dripping out of the bolts. i got out my ratched and noticed they were pretty loose, i tightened them just before it got hard to turn, but i hope they arent supposed to be loose on purpose. (seemed to stop the seeping)

thats all!

It's technically called the transmission oil pan. I don't know the torque specs on the bolts for the '86, but they're not supposed to be gorilla-tight. I just recently replaced the filter on my '01 AW4 transmission and the service manual called for 53-70 INCH-pounds, so between about 4-6 FOOT-pounds, which is practically nothing. The gaskets are made of cork so if you tighten down too much, you'll mess the gasket up.

I would take a 1/4" ratchet and just snug them down and see if the leak stops.

If you plan on doing most of your own wrenching, get a Chilton Repair Manual or something similar. I have a Chilton that covers Wagoneer, Comanche, Cherokee for the years 1984-1998 (bought it in 1999). Has been an invaluable source! The number on that book was 40602 and according to JC Whitney, it is still that number for the Comanche.

You can get diagnostic manuals also, but they cover a lot more that jeep and are pricey. This "Total Care" manual included wiring and vacuum diagrams, and is 25.00 at JCW. Most major parts stores should have them.

i understand keeping it stock... but how fun is that? :dunno: I would hate if i couldnt run my mj through the woods and down muddy hills and stuff. itsa four wheel drive and 2.6. honestly if it was me i would resell that baby for what its worth to somone who just wanted to take to to shows and use the profit to buy a 4.0 4wd and have fun with it  . its an amazing truck man, and if your wiling to leave it in the garage and stuff then you should hold on. but i would have to sell it for one i could actually play with

That is a stunning original example!

2.8L over here too, so far so good, 250,000km. Change it to the 3.4L only if it breaks.

In my limited experience, the 2.8L isn't as bad as some folk around here make out  When it breaks I'll change my tune

Guess depends on whatcha wanna do with it. I know this will get some "WHAT!!!!!!'s", but I am not interested in 4 wheeling  . Plus, just plain can't afford it. If I broke something like a t-case 4 wheeling, it would be months, maybe a year before my truck ran again. Personally, don't want a 4x4. Even our new patriot is FWD only.

Mine is a DD (except in bad winter weather) and I left it stock except for a tonneau cover, moldings off the side (coming loose anyway), the black is gone off the "jeep" on the tailgate, and Engine has a slightly better cam, headers, and single in dual out exhaust. Otherwise, stock ... a "streetjeep" :brows:
