jteckmann
Isn't that a grill from like a Comet or something? That grill came off a car IMO, I just can't remember year, make or model? It's the round turn lights. The "razor" grills on the J-trucks have rectangular turn lamps below the headlights. Whoever did this had to trim the bottom 2"-3" from the grille to fit it height-wise (not to mention cutting a good chunk out of the middle to fit it width-wise). Now that you've pointed it out, the way they incorporated the round lights into the grille reminds me a lot of an old AMC Hornet or something .... but I'm pretty sure they started off with a J-Truck razor grille. jeepdoggydogB
I've had this 71' Javelin/AMX since 1990. (bought my first one in 1987) Went from this: Image Not Found to this (my little brother's senior painting project in 1991): Image Not Found Now it sits with 99k miles on the ticker, and my son wants me to put it back on the road for cruizing next year: Image Not Found Image Not Found Excellent resto job, your Javelin looks great! As far as going "sideways" with an AMX I have driven the old style and the newer 1979 style and a V8 in the 1979 model year was very easy to get sideways, but earlier years didn't have much different handling characteristics than the Mustang's (not Mustang II's). akamcbird
'79 style? was that the one with the same body as the eagle sx4?
Eagle
'79 style? was that the one with the same body as the eagle sx4? You guys are both confused. The original Javelin and 2-seat AMX ran only from 1968 through 1970 and was available only with a V8. I owned several and always destroyed Mustangs in autocross. The early Javelins and AMXs didn't handle at all like Mustangs, the AMC iron handled far better than the Mustangs. The next generation was the "Javelin AMX," which is what we're seeing photos of in this thread. I believe that was also only available as a V8. But the Javelin was gone by 1979 and the "AMX" badge was stuck on a Hornet/Concord. IIRC those were only available as a 258 c.i.d. (4.2L) in-line 6. It was not the same body as the Eagle SX-4, it was the longer wheelbase Hornet/Concord coupe body. The Eagle SX-4 was on the shorter Gremlin chassis. jpnjim
1968-1969 2 seat AMX: 290 4bbl, 343 4bbl, or 390 4bbl 1970 2 seat AMX: revised ft suspension, 360 4bbl or 390 4bbl 1971 AMX became an option package on the Javelin: (4 seat) 360 2bbl, 360 4bbl, or 401 4bbl 1972-1974 Still Javelin/AMX's: 304 2bbl became std equipment on AMX (360 2bbl/4bbl & 401 4bbl optional). 1977 AMX package added to the Hornet: 258, and 304 2bbl available. 1978 The Hornet name was dropped for the Concord, so the Hornet AMX becomes the Concord AMX. 1979 AMX name moved over to the Spirit line, last year of the V8 in AMC cars. 1980 Last year of the Spirit/AMX: 258 engine only. My first AMC was a ($100) '74 Javelin/AMX (304/auto), then a '72 Javelin/AMX (401/4spd), a '74 Javelin (258/auto), a 72 Javelin/SST (360/auto, 304/3spd when I got it), and this current one ('71 Javelin/AMX 360/4spd, 401 badges are on it, but the 401 is still in the basement :ack: ). Also had a few parts cars (including a '73 401/4spd Javelin/AMX, and a 360/4spd Gremlin :D ), and tried to daily drive a 4cyl Spirit, but blew up the Chevy iron duke 4 the first day I registered it :wall: . I moved on to Jeeps after that.
jpnjim
OK, after 32 posts, this thread is still missing something....... hmm... looks pretty close to fitting. (sorry about the lack of light, I think it gets dark at noon time now. :( ) In place: Newp. Oh, I also tried out this one ;) Would look good if cut down in height (looks taller than it is, because of the angle of the pic), but no way would I want to chop up one of these grilles.

jimoshel
Don't chop the grill. Chop the bumper. I'm not sure what years, around '32-'35 Fords had a "V" in their front bumpers matching the shape of the grill.Make the front bumper a two piece unit like the 'vette. Shaped to match the grill. 'course you'r not gonna be rock climbin with it.
Darren
Hey jpmjim, would you sell that rhino grill? If you would, shoot me a pm and let me know what you want for it, I've been looking for one.
jpnjim
Sorry Darren, not looking to sell it. I got it 15+ yrs ago at the junkyard ($20 'grabathon', whatever you could carry, and I can carry a lot :D ). If I thought everyone would be looking for them now, I would've grabbed the other 3 (atleast) that were there. :ack:
