jpdocdave
ummm....so we have a scum bag drug lord thanking us because he's rich on illegal drugs. how is that our governments deal? we should listen to a drug lord now i guess. he's a scum bag, and to keep him from getting rich we should legalize drugs? no thanks. how about we go knock on his door and take him down, why don't we get the "cajones" to do that instead of his theory??? :wall:
dfreeman616
that article has some good points, actually. basically we have a policy of prohibition on drugs much like there was on alcohol 90 years ago. that worked out well, didn't it? al capone wouldn't have been a big deal in chicago if alcohol had been legal at the time. also, much of the drug traffic is for weed, but weed in small amounts isn't any more dangerous than alcohol and has less long term health problems than alcohol or tobacco. that article just kind of skims the issues, but there's also a lot of profit for the US government and businesses for the "War on Drugs." on a similar note, around the time leading up to prohibition of alcohol, henry ford was pushing for alcohol based fuel cars, while j.d. rockefeller of standard oil pushed heavily for oil based fuel (surprise!). both put a lot of money into their viewpoints, and prohibition lasted long enough to kill the alcohol cars of that day. by the way as a disclaimer, i've never used nor do i care to use the drugs that are currently illegal, even if they do become legal. maddzz1
The other issue is the crime and violence that goes along with illegal drug activity. In switzerland they started giving heroin addicts the choice of methadone or heroin at a clinic. This dropped the crime rate 90% and people were able to maintain emplyment because they didnt have to spend the day trying to cop and being sick. dasbulliwagen
not to hijack the thread, but the longterm effect of smoking weed have not been fully proven. Smoking weed is the same as smoking a non filtered cigarette, and the people who do it longterm will see the effects. Enough studies havent been done on it because its illegal, and people who do it don't want to be studied for fear that they might be caught. Ive never done any of that stuff either, but Ive hung out with enough poeple who have to know that chiiit makes you stooopidd, and not just when youre doing it. And to publicize that a Mexican druglord is thanking the US govt for keeping it illegal goes right along with the liberal mindset that everything we americans do we should be ashamed of because we have it soo much better than many other parts of the world.... its all just bullchit!
jpdocdave
^x2 i've done it a hand full of times in my late teens early 20's. didn't care for it. i've hung around many that were full out addicts, and those that did it enough. i agree with what you said. and i also know from being around it most of my early adulthood nothing good comes of it, useless, and damaging. mvusse
Disclaimer: This post contains personal opinions and unverified, possibly false information. Don't take this post as point of fact. The problem with smoking weed is not the THC, it is the incredibly high tar content. But there's no reason you can't use filter blanks. Of course that kind of kills the point since it filters out THC as well. It was legal where I lived the first 16 years of my life, and very lax laws where I spent the next 6. Then I move to the states and am astonished how many resources are wasted trying to control a non-problem instead of using those resources to go after the hard stuff. Don't tell your kids "Drugs are bad, don't do drugs," if you want them to stay clean. They will experiment just because they are "supposed to be bad". Instead teach them about specific drug's specific effects, risk of addiction and health risks; as to allow them to make their own educated decisions. And that includes tobacco and alcohol. My father never cared much, but I figured out why when I came across his water bong. My mother was (still is at 62 years old) extremely naive and has led a very sheltered life. As a result I experimented probably more than I should have. Don't personally see a problem with alcohol, tobacco or THC, learned to stay away from amphetamines, cocaine in any form, morphine and relatives, and E. Also think everyone should experience psilocin, psilocybin or LSD once for the experience. Mine was mind opening. But there's no need to ever kill that many brain cells in a single shot again. So legalize weed, tax the bejeesus out of it and use that money to wage war against hard drugs instead.

jpdocdave
i for one know if it was legal i would have tried it earlier, and more frequently, and most likely would have effected the outcome of my life. i've known worked with and employed drug users (weed) every single one of them were lazier, less productive, worse attitude, all around weaker employees
whowey
Someone probably should have told the author to sober up before inventing quotes from Mexican government officials. They read like a Woody Harrelson/Mark Tunei monolouge. Dope proponents can point to idiotic garbage like that "article" one of the reasons why they are looked at like they are stupid.... dfreeman616
i for one know if it was legal i would have tried it earlier, and more frequently, and most likely would have effected the outcome of my life. i've known worked with and employed drug users (weed) every single one of them were lazier, less productive, worse attitude, all around weaker employees part of that may be due to the kind of people who partake in illegal activities, too. typically, someone who doesn't care about following the laws of the land isn't going to care much about doing things well for someone in authority over them (employer). if weed was legalized, it would free up a lot for the harder, far more destructive drugs out there. there are places that weed is legal, and it's not that bad in those areas. then there's the medical use for marijuana, which may be a large reason it's still illegal. pharmaceuticals probably don't want cheap, more effective drugs to deal with certain chronic and terminal pains (kind of like i was getting at with the alcohol fueled cars). also, the current ban on marijuana also bans other plants related to the one people smoke, but are no good for smoking. they are, however, good for certain textile uses (competition for cotton and synthetics). by the way, i've also known people who have used weed (probably still do) that are good workers. anecdotal evidence only goes so far. One of the smartest guys I know smokes a lot of weed everyday, still smarter than me. Just like you guys know weed users are lazy and not motivated, I know smokers are low class, ignorant thieves. See ain't one persons anecdotal evidence great?

Smoking weed is the same as smoking a non filtered cigarette, and the people who do it longterm will see the effects. Know many three-pack-a-day weed smokers, do you? :brows: Actually, my understanding is that the tar content of weed is actually much higher than properly processed tobacco. However, that came from a biased source. Regardless, I think there is few people who smoke large qunatities of unfiltered tobacco in this day and age. Pipes aren't in style, and how many people take the time to roll? FWIW, the tar problem in weed can easily be fixed by baking it. Since you're going to get stoned out of your tree and want to eat brownies anyways, you might as well make a batch of 'green' ones and a batch of regular. I know a few people who do this, as they think smoking is 'icky' (rightly so) but still want to get connected with nature, or jesus, or whatever the hell it is that people want to get high for. And I don't know many 3-pack-a-day cigarette smokers, most of them have already died.

How did they fare? Like anything, abuse (IE, gross over-use) will definatly affect somebody. I'm sure you're guilty of having a few drinks on friday night. Would you naturally assume that somebody who takes a few drags from a marijuana cigarette on occasion to be a worse person? I'm not into weed, but I wouldn't hold it against a guy for wanting to get high occasionally. All the time? Yes, then they have a problem. I know people who have to get high in the morning before work, sneak off to get high during work, then get high after work. Sounds a hell of a lot like an alcoholic to me, just with a different substance.

summerinmaine
so why make another addictive, damaging, controlling substance legal. JMHO of course, but because it's not the gov's job to be our nannies. Otherwise, ask yourself why alcohol and tobacco are NOT illegal.

jpdocdave
this sums up my point on the subject, i've done it, had friends that did it anywhere from time to time to couldn't function without it. i got no use for it, and guarantee if it was legal, it would not have helped me at all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_qD9uZ8kB8
