I've got a 92 4.0 which is destined for a stroker, and when I was cleaning/rearranging the shed yesterday I tapped on it and realized it was the plastic one. I have a metal one off my 88 4.0.

Can I put the Renix one on the HO? Are there any advantages/disadvantages to having the metal vs. the plastic one?

You can run the Renix lid, but I would trim the "towers" so that they are not hanging down like they are now. I would trim them to about 3/4" long, so that they siphon oil off of the top of the head, as the factory length does. You can also just run the late 95 and up which has the full length baffle. I am running this style on all of my 4.0s', but run what you have...

some of the older 258 cj motors had a plastic cover on them.they were crack prone and i don't know if they would interchage with a 4.0 or not.

Good point. The 87 and up 4.2 in the Wrongler used a plastic cover, with a couple of brackets that bolted on and were used to hold a BUNCH of non-needed crap. That might be where the plastic cover came from. It might be all that the PO of the engine could find to work on this motor...So, I would be wondering what lead to the swap?

4.0 HO engines use an aluminum valve cover. I have a spare one if you need it.

That's odd. I go the one for my MJ off of a 95 model. STEEL, with full baffle, just like the later models. I pulled one from a 98 that was STEEL also.

NO, magnets will not attract to aluminum, HO valve covers are aluminum, not steel.

Aww - Cmon. I might not be the next Steven Hawkins, but I do know a few things... :dunce:
