anyone ever made a "suburban" out of a Grand Waggy?

Saw a fullsize Cherokee yesterday and the gears in my brain started churning about combining the back half with a Grand Waggy. :D

I like the fullsize Jeeps, but I want a bit more wheelbase for towing purposes and interior space. and, while I'm dreaming, a diesel engine too. :yes:

Build one.

 

The gas mileage of those things can't get much worse. :D

 

 

My first Jeep was a, 73' J4000 FSJ P/U

360/4bbl/Granny T-18/SF 35sp D60 rear (closed D44 ft) w/4.10's, on 31's.

 

After alot of tweaking, I doubled the gas mileage (from 4 to 8mpg :ack: )

The Grand Wagoneer I had was THE most comfortable vehicle I have ever owned, but like previous poster said, " the gas milage can't get much worse". Mine had the 258 six and never got any better than 13 MPG. If I had the money not to worry about fuel prices, Id have me another one, only without all the Michigan rust out. :yes:

Heck no. It's too dang cold in Michigan. But it's never too cold to dream up that next project. :D

a waggy i had with a 401 got a wopping 11mpg. then i pulled it and built it. after that i got alot, i mean alot of power. gas mileage dropped to 6mpg. it was fun though.

 

i had a friend that extended a full size cherokee back in the 80's. he added 6 inches in front of the rear seat and another 6 right behind the rear wheel. it turned out pretty cool. he never got paint on it though. a semi hit him as he was pulling out of a mcdonald's. too bad, that was alot of work down the tube.

 

he bought a suburban with the insurance money and held onto his cj. ;)

I couldn't take the stock rims so I slapped on some bigger meats. :D I don't care for the paneling either, but I'll live with it until I find a usable side shot of a better rig.

I assume you mean Grand Wagoneer. It's really more like a Tahoe. Actually, it's even smaller than a Tahoe. Suburbans have a 130" wheelbase, Tahoes are 118", Waggys are only 109" (less than an MJ).

oh you are going by wheelbase then.

 

the 85 fullsize we used to borrow was plenty big to fit 5 people, with all our luggage, to go out on snowmobile trips up north and still pull a 4 hauler enclosed snowmobile trailer, so I don't see much sense in making a boat bigger.

Over the years I've towed the MJ with a Liberty and a Durango (current model). The MJ likes to push them around. The Waggy by itself just isn't big enough for me. I want a tow vehicle that has a longer wheelbase than the MJ. Plus I've been spoiled by the cavernous space of my minivan. Likely I'm just going to get a 7.3L Excursion, but in the meantime I'll dream of Jeeps. :D

A Grand Wagoneer without the wood panelling just would not look right. I don't have a wheelbase problem towing as much as a weight problem. My trailer weighs 1200 pounds empty, and sometimes upwards of 4000 loaded, depending what I load it with. With the Suburban I had to check the rear view mirror to remind myself it was back there. it was only noticeable when heavily loaded. With both my Comanche and Cherokee I have to be careful on twisty roads because even empty it tries to push my rear end out of the turn. Last week I felt it go and only barely saved it by slamming it into 4wd as I floored the gas. Then slowed the heck down once I was through the turn with trailer straight behind me.

 

It shouldn't be a problem. It only is because I'm used to a 6000 pound vehicle with 3500 pounds on the rear axle unloaded. Not a 3500 pound vehicle with less than 1000 pounds on the rear axle.

:agree: I love towing with my Yukon, even though its the short version (2000). My parents have an 01 XL, and the added wheelbase isn't really noticably better, as one would think.

 

But since we're dreaming, I say go for it, but how about powering it with the 7.3l diesel?
