WahooSteeler
Don, I was over on jeepforum.com classifieds just sniffin' around and ran across a set of spacers for sale. he also posted a link to the company that machines them. a little late now but they have 1, 1.25, 1.5 and 2" sizes available. http://www.weirdharoldscoolparts.com/new%20page0.htm
HOrnbrod
I saw those Wahoo, but they don't look like they are hubcentric. Sent the guy an email to ask and he never replied. So I went w. the SpiderTracs.
shelbyluvv
You are correct Don. They are not hub-centric. I had to email them 5 times before he replied.
WahooSteeler
Good to know. I guess Weird Harold really is weird. I'll be going with SpiderTracs this summer.
1990 Pioneer 4x4
Okay, here's the best I could do mainly because I lacked a good BEFORE pic. BEFORE REAR SPACERS AFTER REAR SPACERS Even so it's pretty easy to see the difference I think. Your truck looks good and one of the cleanest i've seen. But, i think i like that narrorer stance.

WahooSteeler
Don, since this whole mod was to satisfy ME, I need you to take a shot from the front looking back. LOL, seriously though, that would be a nice shot to see as it might help answer this question. IYO, are the rears now square with the front or are they a little wider? Or, are they still a little inboard? I'm sure you have nothing to do today, so get to it please. (You know I'm kidding, right?)

Yes you crazy bastid. :D Actually the rears are still inboard about 1/4" inboard as compared to the fronts. I cut a straight 1x1 a bit longer than the tire width so I can snug it up to the flare bottom when it is flush w. the tire. The fronts stick out exactly to the outer edge of the flare. I'll get a pic later.
SuperWade2
Hey Don... I'm getting a pair of the Spidertrax spacers for my Rear End also... MY 29x9.50's on my Gambler Rims already have some "rubbing" on the frame on the driver side. There is only about 1/2"-3/4" gap, max between the top of my tire now and the frame. I'm guessing because of my 5.5" Backspacing on those TJ Gambler Rim's I'm running. I have 31x10.5's on order to get installed later this week or next, but I figured it would be TOO close otherwise. My rear tires are tucked way in the flares now, and I think the 1.25" will help me not rub in the back with the bigger tires and "even" things out. like they did for you. Since I run 4 of them (actually 5 since I needed one to get the spare mounted on my rear tire carrier) on my TJ, having a couple extra in the event of a failure wouldn't be a horrible thing either...just another $100 that I didn't really need to spend. Any update after having them on for a little while now? SW2

Any update after having them on for a little while now? SW2 Hey Wade; I'm likin' them. Have been hauling 1000 lb. + tile loads the last month or so redoing our house bathrooms and the the spacers really help reduce the body roll w. a full load. I did have some brake squealing shortly after I installed them, but it turned out to be the four year old front disk pads. I replaced them w. non-metallic pads, had the front rotors turned and all is well. Yeah, if you've got frame rubbing now w. 29" tires and your 5.5" BS, 31s will be worse. How wide are your Gambler wheels? You really should have an 8" wide rim w. 31" tires I think. I never had rubbing with my 31s on the 4.5" BS 8" wide Ravine wheels, but the clearance around the rear disk brake caliper was only maybe 1/4"; a bit tight. So the spacers gave me plenty of clearance there, and the tires sit almost square in the flares and the handling is better. Yeah, I'm glad I got them.

kro10000
Sorry I dunno if the original question was answered but... The reason (Ive been told) that the rear tires sit in is to give better highway roadholding while hauling... Makes the truck track straight

DJM/78
The tires do show their teeth a bit more , I think its an improvement over a stock BS any day . Mine rides great with 4" BS wheels .
jpnjim
the rears are inboard to help with turning, it helps the rear track inside the front and tighten up the radius, but I doubt if you will notice too much of a difference. Weird. I had an 01 XJ I bought new, and the wheels were equally spaced in the wheel wells. So the rears being more inboard than the fronts is an MJ thing? Mine's a LWB; is it same thing w. the SWB MJs? :hmm: Sorry I dunno if the original question was answered but... The reason (Ive been told) that the rear tires sit in is to give better highway roadholding while hauling... Makes the truck track straight There may be some complicated reason Jeep wanted the rear track width narrow compared to the body, but I think it was very simple. XJ's, MJ's, ZJ's & YJ/TJ's all have different size bodies, and different overall widths at the wheel wells, but they all use the same exact width ft & rear axles (& interchangeable shafts). When they wanted to make a pickup truck, they wanted the bed wide enough to be useful, but didn't want to go all the way, and create a unique width rear axle, so they compromised, and the result tucked the wheels a little further into the flare then the tires on XJ/ZJ/YJ & TJ's. :smart: That's my story anyway. kro10000
I considered that, but... This isnt strictly an MJ thing, i see it on a lot of other trucks, my dakota was the same way
Pete M
It's true that other trucks have a wider front axle than rear. they say it helps in handling. makes it look even worse looking when you swap a ford 44 and 9" under your MJ. :(
kro10000
wait this all makes sense now :dunce:
HOrnbrod
As stated before, the OEM MJ front/rear axle track dimension is identical. If you have excess weight hanging out over the rear axle wheel centerline, there's no way that can help handling. It just creates oversteer. Makes no sense at all to moi. spence
I have personally used the Spydertrax for several years on my XJ's running 15x12 MT classics, shoed with 33x12.5 Mud Grapplers. Torqued them to 90PSI and never had ANY problems with loosening, even at 90MPH on the road or blasting through the swamp. Just make sure you get all the crud off of the hub mounting surface first.
