my father did one a few years ago

in the test he actually went 4 3/4 min without breathing then a huge gasp of air fine for a few breaths then again 3 1/2 no breathing

he a machine that esentualy blows air into his nose to keep his soft palete from relaxing and causing him to stop breathing.

after the first night he called a "family meeting" :smart: and told us about his dream he had   :???: :shake:

we all called him snuffy for a few weeks :clapping: :rotfl2:

apairently he had not had a dream about any thing for 20 years or more :(

I have been through it too. I was not diagnosed with apnea, but I did end up having a roto-rooter surgery on my sinuses and a little laser work in my throat. The sinus thing was great and I wish I had done it many years ago, but the throat laser was ungodly painful and not worth it at all...I still snore and now I choke on things real easy if I am not careful.

Hope all goes well for you...

GOOD MORNING COMANCHE CLUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL. Well, first off, thanks for the kind words fellas. As Fubar said, apnea can be serious stuff and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to be tested. Anyhoo, about 2.5 hrs after I was asleep they came in to put the CPAP mask on me, so I guess I had already shown enough symptoms to hook me up. Even with all that crap on me, I was able to relax and sleep and I must say when they woke me up at 6am I felt better than I have in a long time. It's funny though, I actually got a little depressed on the way home wondering how long I've been dragging around thinking I was "just tired" because I'm overweight, stressed out with young kids, and staying up too late, yet none of that mattered because I was never getting a deep productive type of sleep. Hell, it could have been years! Better late than never!!

Cool, I guess I need one of those CPAP machines. I've woke myself up a few times gasping for air. I remember a few times waking up and being completely paralyzed, now thats a scary feeling there. Never saw any aliens, or grim reepers tho. :chillin: My ex does those sleep studies and she always said I needed to have one done from my breathing patterns and breathlessness while sleeping.

Why is it so serious?

I still don't know all of the details of it, but soon will learn. But, probably the best answer is, go ahead and hold your breath as long as you can right now, when you have to take air go ahead and do it. Then, wait 10-15mins and do it again. Repeat this process for 6-8hrs straight.

Let's put it in mechanical speak. Never shut your truck off, i.e. let the engine run 24-7-365. Sure, it idles a good bit of the time and is not being run hard, but if you NEVER shut it down completely and let the engine and all of it's INTERNAL PARTS "rest", they will wear out quicker. Worse, they may wear out without you knowing it, you just think it's running a little rough and then all of a sudden one day, the engine gives out unexpectedly.

Not trying to be dramatic, it just made a lot of sense, even to me, when I put it in those terms. Basically, it is known to contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease and other serious ailments if never treated properly.

**Edit, and as Pete notes below, you are starving your brain of oxygen.

Sleep apnea was the most likely cause of all my brain issues back in 02. (What caused me to have the apnea was related to the 6 months of fighting mono). Too bad none of the Doctors I saw (tired all the time, memory problems, vision problems, attention span problems, never dreaming) even thought about a sleeping issue. I can only imagine how my life would be now if I hadn't dug myself that deep of a hole. Sleep apnea is not something to take lightly. :(

Apnea is weird stuff. One of my brothers has it. He use to fall asleep when we were watching football and another brother & I would watch him hold his breath for several minutes & then gasp for a big breath of air. We used to bet on whether or not he was finally dead or if he would gasp for air again. After several years of this he had a heart attack during one of these episodes. He now wears the mask at night and just does fine. Oddly the brother I did the betting with who was a healthy as a horse & never had a really sick day in his life, had a stroke 8 days ago & dies. We never know do we!!!!!! I have apena myself & have used the mask for several years. Definetly a help in replenishing the ol oxygen. :D

a "Apnea" is when you stop breathing in your sleep.

Personally last test showed 60-80 per hour average for me.

One easy way to find out if your at risk.. what size dress shirt do you wear.. 15.. 17.. your ok.. 18.. or like me 22.. your at risk.

It's serious. Causes stress on your heart and can kill you.

I fight it every day. It sucks.. and every time I try to go do something about it I get tied up with other things. As it is now I have a mask and machine.. but I can't sleep more than a few hours with it and I am ripping it off. Looking into a oral appliance that will open my airways. Also going to need some nasal surgery and my throat cut open to allow more airflow.

Just like a truck.. if it's airway is restricted it doesn't run..

Also Sleep Apnea can make it EXTREMELY HARD to lose wieght.

Yup been using my APAP (that's a CPAP that auto adjusts) for 10 years now. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.........everybody knows when I've had a bad night.

Something about a female bear with a sore head.............Anyway to the guy who can only keep it on for 3 hours....it sounds like your pressure may be set incorrectly. For your lifes sake don't let anything else get in the way get in and get it straightened out Nobody wants to lose a friend/brother/husband/dad.......you get the idea the longer you wait and "let life get in the way" the more at risk you are.

Sorry.....I've lost too many people in my life........I'll get off the soap box now.
