  1. IIRC from reading the Renix manual there are two "modes of operation" that proceed in sequence: "Key on" mode and then "crank" mode. During the key on mode, the fuel pump relay is energized and the ECU completes the circuit for up to three seconds to prime and build up pressure in the fuel log. Then, once crank mode is engaged, the ECU determines if proper cranking speed is achieved, and "learns" the location of cylinder 1 or 6 to begin the firing order and the injector sequence. One consequence is that if you turn the key from "off" straight to the start position, it may actually take a bit longer to start because you rushed the priming of the fuel log, and might have a lean F/A mixture for the first few ignition signals. I just finished reading the manual last week, so I hope I retained that info correctly. :smart:
  2. Sorry. Does nothing for me.
  3. SoCal here. All of my off-road travel (so far) has been in the Anza-Borrego Desert and in Baja.
  4. Flyfisherman here. Usually for trout in NoCal (nothing much down here in the desert). Haven't been in a long time, and I miss it greatly.
  5. Why not? Cali is dying economically and it would fit right in w. the lifestyle. Might as well let the state reap some of the bene's unless it ends up in some politico's pocket, which it prolly will. 8) so with this argument, lets legalize prostitution and tax it, that can generate revenue, lets bring more casinos cuz they bring more revenue. btw, casinos is how chicago keeps trying make more money, and they can't argue the crime, theft, drugs, prostitution and so on is rediculously hi in those areas. do we have no morals anymore? Apparently I don't, because I see no reason why prostitution and gambling could not be legalized and regulated in a way that inflicts far less cost and damage to society than the current prohibitionist schemes. Much of the crime associated with those pursuits is a direct result of their criminal status. Do they have the same levels and types of crime in the areas immediately around the legal Nevada bordellos? And as to pot, in view of the research summary noted above, and my libertarian views, it always strikes me as hypocritical that those who favor continued harsh criminalization of pot are not out fighting to also criminalize alcohol and tobacco use. But I guess that's just my lack of morals showing again.
  6. One big problem is that much of the conventional wisdom, both pro and con, about pot use is anecdotal; rigorous scientific studies have been hard to come by and are often agenda-driven. But here's a recent article from the Sacramento Bee, after The Governator suggested we look into legalization:
  7. Its not that synthetics cause more heat,, it has more to do with them NOT transferring heat as well as dinos. My uncle has an race engine shop and went through the whole dino vrs synthetics a few months back.. They use Brad Penn blends in all of their builds after being broke in on the dyno. He said with a blend you get the best of both worlds.. Better lubrication, and a good transfer of heat, or heat being taking away by the oil which causes a better dissipation. Synthetics don't cause more heat just hold it longer. But the considerations for race engines are not necessarily the same as for longevity in working engines, right?
  8. Not directed to anyone in particular: I agree that legitimate arguments can be made on both sides of the debate over the legalization of drugs, but I think that the social cost of criminalization far outweighs the cost of legal drug use. I also think that the argument that pot has "no proven medical value" is a canard. For decades the Feds have actively suppressed any legitimate scientific inquiry into the medical benefits/long-term effects of pot, so for them to complain in the face of state decriminalization efforts that there is no "proof" of medical value strikes me as the ultimate in hypocrisy. In addition, the FDA has largely taken a hands-off approach to the entire genre of herbal supplements. They need not be proven either safe or effective, but simply must make no specific medical claims. The Feds simply go after all the herbal supplements that are "fun" to take. What I also find incredibly ironic is that, most often, it seems to be the folks who profess to be for "small government, low taxes, stay out of our business affairs" who are more than happy to allow the government to regulate what consenting adults can put into/do with our bodies. Why the disconnect?
  9. JMHO of course, but because it's not the gov's job to be our nannies. Otherwise, ask yourself why alcohol and tobacco are NOT illegal.
  10. Yes, and without breaking any laws.
  11. Know many three-pack-a-day weed smokers, do you? :brows:
  12. Cool! Overspray on the wheel trunnions though?
  13. So your NOx is great, but you failed at both speeds on both the HCs and CO. Sounds like rich running to me as well. I wouldn't touch the cat until the very end of the process. Are you eligible for "assistance" under the smog reduction program? Something to consider. Oh, and bummer about getting into the CARB 'puter as a GP. From here on out, they'll be climbing up your "tailpipe" with a major flashlight, and they don't use lube nor give you a reach around.
  14. Since it's out of the mainstream, probably won't be too helpful but: Reported by PO: 4" Full Traction Lift in front (looks like their 3.5" with LCAs) Rusty 4" MJ springs in the rear (sagged after a year, but I don't hold that against them considering the load it's carrying) Skyjacker shocks JKS Adjustable Track Bar What I've done: Hellwig helper springs in rear 31x10.5 ProComps on 15x8" rims.
  15. I go to my local, and have them pull a pint of whatever's on cask. Love casked beers, ales, stouts, etc.
  16. :needpics: Somebody had to say it! :brows:
  17. And you should expect excess tire wear in the center.
  18. The factory generally recommends @32psi as a compromise between handling, tire wear, ride harshness, fuel economy, etc. In my rig (details below) I run 38-40psi, due to the extra weight and to improve fuel economy. Some folk with a similar set-up to mine run quite a bit higher (45-48psi). p.s. When I'm in the silt in Baja, I drop mine as low as 12-13.
  19. Welcome! There's a lot of good folk, and a lot of good info here. Someone will be along soon to answer your questions. As for me . . . I got nothing! :rotf:
  20. I picked WW since that's the closest choice to my actual purpose. I got my MJ/Camper to support the pit crew work I do in the SCORE Baja series of desert races. We work with a well-known racing team (Desert Assassins), and have for 2009 a sponsorship by a well-known off-road lighting company (KC HiLiGHTS). We run a "flex pit" operation, where we specialize in setting up a mini-village somewhere BFE, and handling just about any problem for the range of vehicles that participate under the DA banner (Trophy Truck, buggy, 7sx Truck, MCs, etc.). As such, we'll often be carrying wheel/tire combos to fit four different vehicles, fuel and fluids of various types, spare parts (up to and including transmissions), high-intensity lights, generators and welding gear, etc. etc. Here's an example of one of our recent set-ups (only 50km out in the desert, last month it was 80km out): Unfortunately, the only pics I have of my rig are during the pre- and post-race festivities: And I'll post this picture: just because I can! :brows: In addition, we operate on a "hospitality" basis (in part supported by the KC sponsorship), so that we never turn any vehicle away (though maybe all they'll get is a shoulder to cry on, a cerveza or three, a makeshift sleeping site, and plenty of desert to piss in). But we did tear down and rebuild the top end for this Uruguayan guy, who seemed to appreciate our efforts: I also use the rig for weekend desert camping with my son, and just got back from a foray into the Anza-Borrego Desert.
  21. I asked this very question not too far back, and there was a suggestion that you could simply fit a resistor into the LFW circuit. Determine what the resistance is at 2 gallons, and add as necessary to "trick" the gauge module. That's the theory anyway. I just decided to live with it.
  22. On mine, I simply pried up the release lever (on the underside), and slid the entire blade off of the pin on the arm (the release lever could be stuck, due to accumulated crap and corrosion). Then, because I'm a cheap bastige, I replaced only the blade refills ($5 for the pair) and reinstalled the blades onto the arms. YMMV
  23. Then start another thread. ;) p.s. I won't be posting in that one. :brows:
  24. SoCal Baby! Land of little rain, and even less rust.
  25. As soon as I saw this thread I thought about you. I am at 183k I'm infamous, huh? :D
