As I mentioned in a previous thread, I appear to have the opposite problem from most cooling system complaints I've read. My MJ still has the stock closed cooling system, and the engine temp rarely gets above 160F (according to the gauge and confirmed a few times with a pyrometer). And it's not like we have cold weather down here. About the only time the temp gets close to 200F is on a really hot day, under load, and stuck in traffic. :dunno: Pulled the thermostat (which looked real old and may have been the original) back in November, and put in a fresh 195. No change. Just pulled that thermostat yesterday, and put in a different 195. Again no change. Each replacement thermostat has the bypass hole, which I understand is correct (i.e. shouldn't cause excess cooling). Is there any other bypass in the cooling circuit that might be flowing excess coolant? I'm scraping the bottom of the thought barrel here. My fuel economy is down around 13mpg, which I assume is due to the ECU system never getting out of the closed loop. OTOH a plug check (not a chop however) showed nice light chocolate colored electrodes/insulators. I'm almost ready to slap a baffle over part of the radiator. Any other thoughts?

89eliminator, did they ask if they could use this?

you are right, sir. i don't even care that he is using my picture, not like i copyrighted it or anything. Not that it should change your opinion, but the pic was copyrighted at the instant of its creation, and the copyright is owned by the person who took the pic. That's the law. yup exactly.....and what if he was the one who took the photo? He? He who? The eBay guy? :D Unless the photo was taken by someone acting within the scope of his employment (among other limited exceptions), then the photog owns the copyright. The law is pretty clear on this. Whether the copyright owner has the right to publish the photo is another question, the answer to which is well beyond the scope of a simple internet post. But owning the copyright does not trump the rights others might have in the subject matter of the photo. -

Got mine from AutoZone. Fit great, sounds fine, and cost ~$35.

Its called lake effect snow here in Upper Michigan :D It gets old after 6 months of this chit though!! I believe it. During Winter down here, the only white powdery stuff we see beneath our feet is sand.
-
Interesting clips. But what's all that white stuff? :dunno:

How are the prices up there? Down here, there's only one yard that has any quantity of Jeeps, and their pricing sux. I'm looking for a 4.11 D30 from a later XJ, and down here they want more than it would cost me to re-gear and re-build mine up to spec.

I don't have an opinion, as I like the wings in my truck, but based on your list, it sounds like the decision has already been made.

 Yea, that's what it means :rotf: Yep. For the H. Rider Haggard fans among us. The term was appropriated by John Mortimer and famously used by Leo Kern in the BBC series "Rumpole of the Bailey" as a sotto voce reference to his wife.

Thanks. So the distilled wisdom to date appears to be to stay away from the 99s, the D44, and maybe the QuadraDriveII, and beyond that just check things pretty carefully as you would any routine used vehicle.
-
Yeah. I'm somewhat familiar with that problem (though fortunately not from FHE). One of my Ducs has that "special red key" that helps you re-program a replacement for the black key. Need a new black key (with the RF sender)? $75. Oh, you lost the red key too? That's be $1,200 (because you need to replace the entire ECU/wiring harness/RF receiver).

Thanks for the comments.

Thanks for the write-up Eagle. That must have been painful, to re-live all those memories.

I agree, but it is gonna be a chick car, after all. :rotf:

Well, maybe. We're getting rid of the leased Highlander Hybrid, and need a replacement vehicle. Simple commuting and kid haulage needs, fuel economy is desirable, but not a deal killer (short commute). For various reasons, another SUV is the vehicle of choice. SWMBO is considering a Grand Cherokee, and likes the looks of the WJ much better than the ZJ. I've looked over some of the GC sites, and will continue to do so, but wondered if anyone has general opinions about the desirability of various WJ alternatives, such as V8 vs. I6 or 2WD vs. 4WD (obviously not a real necessity for the intended use), any particular problems to watch out for, and desirable year model within the 1999-2004 range, etc. etc. etc. All opinions welcome, and taken with the appropriate dosage of NaCl. :brows:

Thanks for all the suggestions. I had a talk with her today, and she's gonna used the 4WD next time it rains to see if there's enough improvement. She also acknowledges that she gets very nervous in the rain, and tightens up. So we talked about how she might gain some experience/confidence and relax a bit, and how that would make her a better driver. Siping is another possibility, and she'll check on the cost locally. I also recommended checking the alignment, and rotating the tires, as she does have some uneven wear in the front. New tires will be the last option.

How many miles have you racked up?
summerinmaine replied to Comanche County's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Mine has 298K on the odo. Stock everything AFAIK (I've only owned it for two years, so no clue as to any rebuild history). Oil pressure is a bit low, but compression is 155 +/- 5# across the board. -
There's a Les Schwab dealer in her town, and a local shop down here said they are good to deal with. I may just send her there and stay on the phone while she makes her selection. BTW I grew up in the Bay Area, and have always drawn the dividing line at about Santa Barbara. Clearly though, I'm in SoCal now. :waving:

Truly awesome tires! I have a set on the van and they are one of the greatest street tires ever. Too bad the sizes are all car sizes. :shake: I wanted a set for the Libby but no dice. Yeah, it's a bit small. 215/70 appear to be the largest size they make for a 15 rim.
-
Thanks. I've bought a number of sets of tires from Tire Rack, and I like their website. I'll use it to review any recommendations, if I decide to replace the tires.
-
Thanks Pete. I'm going to query her about this. And yes, the rims I bought for the Pro-Comps had Long Trails on them, and they were good tires (but old), though I never used them in the wet.
-
I'm confused. :???: Do you mean you bought BFGs? Your link appears to have nothing to do with tires. :dunno:
-
My daughter has BFG Long Trail ATs on her Cherokee (99 4WD Auto, if it matters) and just last month she transferred to a school on the North Coast of Cali where it gets a LOT more rain than what she's used to having. She's complaining that the tires suck on the wet roads. I have no FHE with them, but if this is true (as opposed to her simply needing to get used to driving in the wet), anyone have any recommendations for a good replacement tire? She won't need serious wheeling capability, but does like to use her Jeep on fire roads and on the sand (beach driving is legal up there) so I'm thinking that she needs something other than a straight highway tire. Now that I think about it, I forgot to ask her if she's in 4WD when she's driving in the rain. :dunno:

That's way cool, but I think he messed up on his calculation of displacement. How could a 1/6th scale of a 327ci motor displace only 1.10ci? Area of the bore is 1.13sq inches, and stroke is 0.49 inches. So I get about 0.55ci displacement for each cylinder. Did he forget to multiply by 8 or something?
