  1. The new tailpipe for my SWB cost me $33 IIRC. Would they pay me $7 to take one of the LWB pipes? :brows:
  2. Even though I'm in the desert, I've pretty much pulled all the carpet out of my truck. Why should a work truck have carpeting in the first place? I'll probably fit some rubber mats, but only for sound/heat insulation.
  3. Move to the desert. Problem solved. :rotf:
  4. How long have you had the Moogs?? And how do you pronounce "Moog"? Is it Moo-g like a moo cow and add a gah Or Mow-g like mow the grass and then ugh Or Mah-g Like I'm telling mah and add gah ???? ? It really bothers me not knowing.. :hmm: I always thought it was pronounced the same as the old Boston Bruins goalie Andy Moog. Like Moe with a gah Moog is a family name. So I guess it's pronounced however the founder of the company wants to pronounce it. Robert Moog, the creator of the synthesizer, pronounced it to rhyme with "rogue." I have a very simple family name, but everyone pronounces it wrong. :brows:
  5. Yeah, I don't have that option. Based on the feedback from my companion thread in Tech, I'm going to inspect and lube up the cable, and fit a strap below the tire to serve as a back-up.

    MM's MJ

My MJ came with the identical shift knob. My wife hates it. :D
  7. Probably a rule that was established after MJ's production run. Saw nothing in my manual. Looks like I'm not the only one to consider this. Some sort of strap would probably be the easiest fix, so I'm going to crawl under and see what will work. I already have a strap that holds my tailgate up against the camper, so I'm obviously no stranger to penny-tech solutions.
  8. I've always wondered about the design of the spare tire carrier in the MJ. It seems to me that if the cable breaks (an ever increasing possibility as the MJ gets older) then there is nothing to keep the tire from dropping onto the roadway (on my MJ at least). Am I missing something? If not, does anyone have a suggestion for a quick and easy safety bar or net to catch a dropped spare?
  9. Thanks. The reason I asked was a suggestion from a friend that mounting a deflated spare under the MJ bed would take some weight/strain off of the cable mount, and that didn't make a lot of sense to me. I always carry a high speed/volume air pump with me on desert/Baja trips, so pumping up the spare before installation wouldn't be any big deal. Thus, I wondered if there was any benefit to the suggestion.
  10. Has anyone ever weighed a deflated tire/rim combination, and compared it to the same combination inflated to"normal" specs (e.g. 35psi)? I know that air has weight, and the weight of a particular volume of air depends mostly on temperature and pressure (which, of course, are interrelated). What I don't know, and haven't taken the time to calculate, is whether it's a meaningful amount compared to the overall weight of the tire/rim combination. Anyone know?
  11. Sooo . . . how was it?
  12. LOL :rotfl2: Rest easy sir, you already are the only USA MJ camper! I'm in Canada :Canadaflag:  Seriously though. If I could have found a J-20 to carry my camper, I would have been on that like a fat kid on cake! And the joke used to be that $1200 Canadian? Isn't that like $2.98US? But more recently, the joke's been on us. :D
  13. Buy it!!! That way, I can be the only guy in the entire USA that carries a camper on his MJ.
  14. As I said, just like rattlesnake! :D
  15. I'd cook it up the same way you do rattlesnake. :brows: Dipped in egg, lightly breaded, and pan fried.
  16. Mine has the engine fan (controlled by a viscous clutch, right?) and the auxiliary fan (electric, controlled thermostatically right?). I can't see how a failure of the viscous clutch would cause excessive cooling, unless it locks into a permanent engaged state. Failure causing a freewheel state makes more sense to me. :dunno: Perhaps the auxiliary fan is kicking in inappropriately? Maybe I'll start by inspecting it on start-up (should not spin, right?) and perhaps disconnecting it for a trial run.
  17. That's a good idea! Thanks!
  18. I know it's probably just me, but paint is the LAST thing I would spend coin on for my MJ (as in "ain't never gonna happen" last thing).
  19. Thanks for the suggestions. A restrictor or a baffle is my next "try" but I'm still mystified as to why this should occur. :???:
  20. Nope. Not on an MJ AFAIK.
  21. Thanks. So, given that my temp gauge is accurate, and three failed thermostats in a row would be a bit unlikely, any idea why I'm running cold? :dunno:
  22. Nope. MJ rear flares are unique, and handed to boot.
  23. Been there, done that. Everywhere we checked with the pyrometer showed low temps. BTW AFAIK typically a temp gauge sending unit is a variable resistor (i.e. potentiometer) that varies the resistence (and thus current flow) with temp changes. I assume the MJ is similar.
  24. Agreed. But it is disconcerting to be bushwacking at 10mph in the desert on a hot day, and have the engine running cold. Plus, I'm the kind of guy who is compelled to seek out answers to anomalous occurrences.
  25. Yep. Verified with a pyrometer (i.e. infrared thermometer).
