16K miles Part out 1987 in Vancouver
johnj92131 replied to johnj92131's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Noticed another ad for just the tail gate: $500. OUCH!! Then paint it to match your color also? Even given that he is asking Canadian Dollars - Still $375 U.S. -
For the 91 Comanche, I have the original window sticker and it prices out all the factory options installed on the truck. Dealer items, like the shell, bed liner, bed mat, trailer hitch are naturally not included. Is the build sheet simply a list of the same factory installed options that would have been on the original window sticker? Naturally, without the pricing data. Would anyone care to post their build sheet? Thanks, JJ

86 Diesel MJ to VW TDI conversion
johnj92131 replied to johnj92131's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Please do tell me anything else you remember about the issues with this truck - besides the engine. It may help me avoid a problem or two on the road. Thanks, JJ -
86 Diesel MJ to VW TDI conversion
johnj92131 replied to johnj92131's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
For future reference, I am posting the truck VIN number and how it decodes using the factory service manual. VIN 1JTBW6678GT092562 1 - Manufacturing Country : United States J - Company/Make: Jeep T- Type: Truck B- Engine Type: 2.1L Turbo-Diesel I4 W- Transmission: 5 spd. Flr. Shift (2WD) 66- Series: 2WD Comanche 7- Trim Package: X (F,G,H, or J would each indicate Metric Ton Package) 8- Check Digit G- Model Year: 1986 T- Plant of Manufacture: Toledo, Ohio 092562- Sequential Number Diesel engine was not offered for sale in California. No wonder they are so difficult to find in California. Truck has the optional 23.5 gallon diesel fuel tank, with the 3 straps. See picture below. Need to figure out the rear axle ratio. Shop manual lists 3.54 to 4.10 as available. Not sure the tag is still on the axle after 30+ years. May have to pull the cover and count teeth. No factory a/c - Not sure it was offered with the diesel engine. Can anyone verify this? -

What brand on the shell? Somebody was looking for a specific rear door for their shell very recently. Long bed Lear shell. Here it is: http://comancheclub.com/topic/52164-leer-cap-rear-door-mb-canada-can-travel/ -

Gentlemen, Thanks for that information. When I get the truck back to California later in the Spring, I will be sure to check those locations. Especially under the bench seat.

VIN # was the first thing I checked before buying the truck. Needed to make sure it was a real factory diesel that I could register in California. Used both online sources and the factory service manuals to verify much of the OEM configuration. Have not tried a Carfax.

Sent an email to Jeep Customer service asking for a build sheet for the 1986 diesel Comanche last week. They wrote back telling me the Comanche was too old for their system. Not really a surprise. But does anyone know of an alternative way to get a copy of factory build sheet or where in the truck a copy might have been stashed during the production process? Thanks,

I'm resistant to this only because of the loss of space associated with doing so. I guess there might be some creative options for where to install an adequate sized sub and enclosure, more research would be needed. I should pull my interior out and check what's in there either way. I guess I could just try fading them out and letting the better Polks do the majority of the work too. I agree on the sub, it takes up way too much of the MJ's meager dry storage space for me to bother. Adding an amp (even a small relatively cheap one) will give you some more bass to work with. I don't know how much homework you've done on this so you may be aware of this already, but I wouldn't bother with adding a bunch of "sound deadener" like Dynamat and the others. It doesn't really stop sound from coming in, it just makes panels heavier to cut their resonant frequency. I put almost half of the "bulk pack" of Dynamat in my truck - on the floors, roof, doors, almost everywhere, and I was very disappointed. The only change I noticed was the doors made more of a "thunk" than a "clang" when closing them from the inside. No noticeable decrease in anything else. A much better way to go to cut road noise would be to add something like 1lb/sqft mass loaded vinyl below the glass line. A little more involved than rolling Dynamat everywhere, but it depends on how far you want to go. Yeah, I'm aware the Dynamat type products don't really do a lot. I haven't done much research on it and wouldn't go ordering anything willynilly. I'm guessing this stuff is what you're talking about? https://www.amazon.com/Loaded-Vinyl-Square-Acoustic-Barrier/dp/B007N3356S Fixing my door hinges and seals would probably be the most bang for the buck starting point... Or even going to new style doors with the one piece glass as they seem to seal better in regards to the window. As part of your research, have you read this site: https://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/ When I ever get around to quieting down a car or truck, I suspect this will be my guide and purchase point. I like the low key, informative approach. He even has a bill of material for a Cherokee XJ broken down by areas. That should be useful for an MJ also.. I also agree the new style doors are better at reducing sound. The factory paid some additional attention to this issue with the 1997 update as part of the over all NVH reduction process. The 1997 under hood sound pad does a much better job than the earlier under sound pad. One of the biggest noise sources in the Comanche is the tire/road noise. Most likely transmitted thru the wheel wells. Changing to low road noise tires would be a big impact. There are some things you can to to block the tire/road noise in the wheel well area also.

They are all lined up at the donut shop! Where else would you see that many cop cars?

Can someone demystify seat options?

Any pictures of the mounting? Would love to see them. I just used flat stock and the seats flex a bit. -

Got pics of this? Here are two quick pictures of the driver seat. -
Do as I did, even if I am not required to get 2 of my vehicles smog checked in Southern California. First, my 1996 Passat TDI came with a catalytic converter. I left it in place, even as my 96 is exempt from smog checks when I upgraded the turbocharger and down pipe. Second, my 1986 diesel Comanche now getting a VW TDI engine. Since the old Renalult 2.1 diesel never came with a catalytic converter, I have opted to remove the catalytic converter from the 98 VW TDI engine that is going in to the 86 Comanche. So bottom line, if your truck came with an OEM converter, I say keep it in place. No real point to spewing out more crap than you currently do. Your truck will not run any better without the convertor. In the end, it is your choice.

Mnkyboys posted this thread from 2009 using some 97 Dakota seats. Not sure if it what you want. Missing link to be filled in later. Just takes time to find the gems. Not a whole lot of specific measurements. But a good place to start. http://comancheclub.com/topic/38352-bucket-seat-platform/?hl=ranger+bench&do=findComment&comment=386761 For bucket seats, I used Grand Cherokee seats and added the fold forward mechanism from a 2 door Cherokee XJ. That solved the MJ bucket seat problem for me. There are several others here who used that solution. Please do keep us updated with what you find and I am sure others will add more information here. Pretty soon, we will have some really good and up to date information. -

Axel and spring pack identification?
johnj92131 replied to johnj92131's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Looking way down the road to replacing the spring pack (next winter). I am inclined to go with a original 3+1 spring pack simply for a more comfortable ride match to a good set of shocks all the way around. Then to cover extra weight capacity, when needed, use a set of air bags on the rear axle. Does anyone have experience with this on their Comanche they would like to share? Thanks -

Do hate me cause I BEAT YOU TO IT!!! LOL! Yeah, Woodstock. Guys name is Donnie. Maybe he's an MJ Pimp! Nah, Donnie is a Muffler FREAK, Collects used mufflers!  Then just sells the car/truck   -
Herb, Welcome to the club. As for the value of the barn find - a couple of thoughts. Doesn't sound like the family cares if they sell it or not. So they don't sound like a willing seller. You on the other hand are the one who has seen the truck, have a need for the truck. So you sound like a willing buyer. The question only you can answer is how much will you pay for a replacement truck? To put it another way, how much would you be willing to spend to get your current truck fixed up to look like this barn find? If $2500 would fix your truck up nicely - would you pay it? Then maybe the barn find is worth $2500 to you? Last June, I purchased an old car with only 24K miles on it at auction. This was the 2nd time the car was at auction in 6 months. I figured out a top dollar price I was willing to pay for the car. I did not get it on the first auction. When it came up for auction the second time, I got it for $500 less than I was willing to pay the first time. I can tell you the truck is not worth anything to me. It is located too far away from me. More important, I am not in the market for anymore Comanche trucks. I have two and do not want anymore.
