I've heard that quite a bit from members of other forums when I asked if any DIY guys had a brake lathe to turn their rotors/ drums. Shops usually charge about 10 bucks a piece in my area, I'm not questioning your credibility in any way but would you mind sharing the average cost to get them turned? just curious, thanks.

Brake line to caliper question
big66440 replied to big66440's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Honestly I feel like swapping my rear drum brakes to ZJ discs made a bigger improvement than swapping in the WJ stuff up front. I'm guessing the WJ stuff may be more useful to someone with bigger tires and a "fully loaded" rig with heavy bumpers, winch, etc, etc. I'm using the standard steering set up not the crossover, good luck on your build and thanks for the advice I had contacted you about. -
It's been done before, it's doable but lots of work is involved ( there are write ups in this forum as well as google), depending on your state's smog laws you may run into an issue since the renix system uses an EGR and the HO does not. There may be an issue with the rear drive shaft as well, I'm sure more experienced members can give you better advise on the smaller details, good luck

I had his online store saved in my tabs but I can't find him anymore? I was planning on buying a set of cables from him, by the way I think he's also known as "5-90" ? thanks.

Brake line to caliper question
big66440 replied to big66440's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm using the Akebono calipers, the rectangular piece on the line was too big and it wouldn't allow the fitting to bolt on correctly. I was in a hurry trying to finish up the job in my driveway and it was easier to carry my calipers to the garage and grind off that piece than it was to set up extension cords, grinding wheels and take my time grinding the fitting. These are the lines I'm using https://www.summitracing.com/parts/rus-694850. I tried moving the fitting by hand this last weekend using quite a bit of force and it would not move, I feel a bit better but I still regret that "short cut" -
Interesting,I had a 2 spoke wheel originally and swapped in a 3 spoke and ran into the same problem you're talking about, my lock plate tool actually bent from putting too much pressure on the steering lock plate. I'll grab a spring, lock plate and cancelling cam next time I'm at the JY to see if that fixes my problem, then I'll report to you guys for future reference.

I did the WJ front disc brake swap on my MJ and I had to grind the raised cast piece on the calipers that I'm assuming keeps the square piece of the brake line from rotating ( sorry I couldn't post pictures). The lines have plenty of slack when the wheels are turned lock to lock and I've already driven my truck over 200 miles since the swap but it's something I have in the back of my mind that worries me a bit. Is it something I should be concerned with? thanks.

Astro van hydroboost brakes
big66440 replied to DirtyComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm not trying to sound like an @$$ but I don't think you guys got the point of the OP's post, he wants to do something different and was asking if anyone had experience with his idea to run a GM hydro boost setup. -
Ok guys got them installed and ithe springs raised my front end a hair over 1.75". My Comanche is a stock 4.0 with A/C ( by stock I mean I have a factory style bumber, no winch or other modifications). I HIGHLY recommend these springs they are much more comfortable yet more responsive than the Moog's I replaced and they raise the front end just enough to almost even it out, it still has a small rake but the MJ looks much better.

I agree with schardein OP, the 95-96 XJ dual diaphragm brake booster upgrade is leaps and bounds much better than the original set up even in "brand new condition". There's tons of info on the upgrade from many forums since it is very popular, but it will require a bit more work and maybe tools.

Sorry to hear about your truck, I hope everything turns out for the best. BTW Thank you for your service.

Hey guys, I finally bought front springs to hopefully level my truck and upgrade the handling a bit. From my understanding the ARB 2930 springs will (should) raise my front end approximately 1.5" to 1.75" and I was wondering if you more experienced guys or girls can give me some suggestions on what will need to get the most out of them. I already have the JKS bar pin eliminator http://jksmfg.com/i-9056849-cherokee-xj-comanche-mj-1984-2001-front-lower-bar-pin-eliminator.htmljust to be safe, I've read standard length shocks are OK with this amount of "lift" but I guess installing them won't hurt. I've done stock coil spring replacements on Jeeps before so I'm familiar with the RNR part, I've just never replaced the springs with a different height ones, thanks.

Rear XJ Dana 44 to MJ swap question
big66440 replied to big66440's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I just googled " Aluminum Dana 44 " and you guys are right!!! The extra gussets are a dead give away. I'm glad I posted the listing, thanks for saving my behind. -
This is very true as well as what johnj92131 said that no body got hurt, still sucks that you have to take the time to "take care of it".

Rear XJ Dana 44 to MJ swap question
big66440 replied to big66440's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks eagle Here's a link to the listing http://bakersfield.craigslist.org/pts/5896639265.html I'm not the most knowledgeable Jeep guy out there but the brakes look like a ZJ set up? -
Hey guys I found a rear Dana 44 off an xj for sale locally and was wondering if you guys could help me recap what is necessary to swap it into my MJ. *Relocate spring perches *Get a new drive shaft made *Set pinion angle Are the widths the same? Am I missing anything? is $600.00 with disc brakes, 3.73 gears and posi ( don't know which kind) a good price? thanks
-
I pulled the rear backing plates off of a ZJ with a Dana 44 so I could swap to rear disc's on my Dana 35 (1989 Bolt on axle), are the backing plates the same for the Dana 35's and Dana 44's on the ZJ's? thank you. BTW I'm aware I will have to re drill them and get a different bearing retainer plate, thank you.

I agree with the others, even with my stock tires (235/75/15) I've felt a HUGE difference with upgrades I've done. I have a KOR steering box Brace and Hard KOR adjustable track bar, Iron Rock Off road tow hook mount ( to tie the front end rails). JKS Heavy duty Tie rod, KOR's heavy duty steering stabilizer, and ZJ quick ratio gear box. I can't describe how good the steering performs feels as far as a JEEP goes, I'd say go for it!!

Right on !! . I wasn't too thrilled about the outcome and agree the "protests" have to stop, those people ( protesters) have to realize their actions are not going to change anything politically and have to grow up. Just like every other country we have our ups and downs but luckily we always land on our feet and keep moving forward.

When does it make the noise? turning? going over a bump? while braking?

Ok sounds like I got some homework, verify actual vehicle speed with GPS and go from there. -
