H3RESQ's Dream MJ, the build continues...
H3RESQ replied to H3RESQ's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
In the picture along the frame side (showing mounts to frame) you can see its just spot welded. It will drain water, but not dirt. I figured I would see how that works, I don't want holes in bottom to collect the dirt in first place if I can help it. Figure if they all get plugged up I'll pull it and figure out a better (bigger) drain system. This area.... -
Less pictures of flamed comanches and more pictures of Ke$ha!!!!!

Finally got to the gas tank skid today. I didn't take many pictures do to being busy working on it and my tight time frame to get it done in today. Here are some pictures I did take. I started with a 39.5 x 15 inch piece of cold rolled 3/16 steel. Used the press break to bring 6 inches of each side to a 45. Then 5 inches out in the rear broke it again to 45 making the rear 90 total, so it would have a little angle for any reverse hits to it. Built a couple brackets on frame side to bolt it to frame and cut down the factory straps and used them on the passenger side of tank. I got it as tucked as possible. It is nearly flush with the frame (good considering it has a xj pump going into the top of the tank) Here are some pictures of the tank skid and it mounted. BEFORE....(bashed it pretty good at Elbe) BUILDING.... INSTALLED.... -

Ya my biggest problem is running 35's with 4.88's. The RPM's are just way to high. My other problem........can't keep a lite foot around town. lol. The motor is just to damn snappy with the build sheet on it and the 4.88's I checked the milage going to seattle and back staying at about 58mph the whole way and got 15mpg!!!! I think I'll go to 4.56's when I swap the 30 out of the front. -
Does anyone have first hand experience with the motion offroad progressive coils? I'm specifically interested in the 4.5 xj's Thanks, Jason Great links....thanks guys

Ok, so does anyone know what brands make specific coils for XJ/MJ that are the proper rate, and what companys throw them all together as the same? Basically what brands have the appropriate spring rate for our MJ's. This could make a big difference in performance depending what brand you buy. (especially if your running sway bar eliminators rather than lets say a Anti-rock.

I should also point out my leading factor on a cell is getting more fuel capacity. I only get 200miles to a tank currently and want/need more, or I will have to bring jerry cans for some adventures 200 miles?what size tank?stockers are 23gal in a longbed right? Like mini beast said, my setup is about right for milage per tank. Mine is a shortbed and I have never checked to see what the capacity is (i just fill her up when she needs fuel) and if its the same as longbed. Between low gearing, big motor, big injectors I can't expect more MPG. Its worth the power (tourque) this motor produces. I get about 12 around town and 14 on freeway if I keep it at 60mph -

If you look back at pictures from when I added to the rear bumper you will see I added a side brace to the bumper coming off were the bumper bolts to frame(unibody) So the whole bumper still comes off in one peice. Look close its the last thing I did, there are a couple pics that show the brace and gusset. If you also look close you will see how it is connected to the main bumper brackets. Keep in mind my are extended and have about 4 to 5 bolts holding them. You might have to do the same so the angle is right to have the strength needed for hits to the bumper. Hope this helps, if not, pm me and I'll give you my # and send some better pics and talk to you on phone about it. Also, the tube is welded to the bumper directly so it is part of the whole rear bumper and comes off all one peice. Cheers, Jason -
Ok, so searched a little and not getting the exact info I want. Lets use a 6 inch lift spring for example. (same brand, considering some are different rates, and colors(lol) Is there any difference at all between a TJ and XJ lift coil. (spring rate, height, size, lift you will get on a MJ comparitivly to there proper vehicle application, etc, etc.) I know answers to a couple of the questions but figure since I'm throwing this post up we might as well discuss every aspect of the question. Cheers, Jason

Dropped the tank yesterday. Took some measurments and got steel for tank skid. Should start the skid in the next day or two to have it ready for saturday run. -
I say get a comanche. That said a good silverado is not a money pit. Get the 5.3, its a great motor. I would take a 8 to 10 year old chevy over ford any day. Thats being said even though I own a 73 f250 highboy that I love dearly.

Are you guys really having a discussion over calling them rims or wheels? Good golly, quit being all testical...err technical about it. There rims if there big baller, and wheels if there stock. Haha. That first truck is fine, I wouldn't drive it but whatever. Would look better with the wheels black. Second one looks like the paint was pretty bitchin when it was first done, love that style of pinstriping on the flames. Looks like it was poorly applied though. Love the Irony, saved it to background on computer.

Pinion bearing? Wheel bearing? T-case front output bearing? Just couple ideas -
No less than an 8000lb!!!

First, I suspect not many people even check this section often, as there’s not much going on here. As for me, I wouldn’t go Elb"e" without rocker guards. Ha, opps...ya that's a misspell. Ya, elb(e) is a rocker killler for sure. Both my sliders got fresh scars.

So got the check engine light yesterday. 0420, catalytic converter. It motivated me to go ahead and do the whole exhaust over. the crossover behind oil pan hung to low, as well as the muffler. This motivated me to get it done now instead of later, I can't stand a check engine light on. This also gave me a chance to go with not as loud a muffler and extend the pipe out the back rather than exiting at rear axle. Part of the old exhaust.. The new crossover from headers going behind oil pan. New cat, muffler, and tailpipe. Also took a couple pictures of the gas tank to show the damage from my last outing. I'll be deciding on fuel cell or skid on tank and trying to raise it a little. I'll get to the tank this weekend if I go that route, if not i'll get the fuel cell ordered. If I go fuel cell route it will be in the back of truck with a skid built. I'll probably use a TJ gas filler and work it into the back area of bed in 10g body protection just above tube work on bumper. I really want to raise the tank and skid it because I like keeping the factory filler. If I do the fuel cell it means bodywork and paint because I don't want to keep the factory door showing if its not used. Opinions? Tank... Image Not Found -
Ha...that aint so bad. I'm paying $4.29 at Shell for V-power. I have to run 92 Octane in my stroker motor. I only run shell or chevron gas myself. I think even arco super is around $4.15.

I was gonna comment on the $25 price, but then remembered a woman would also care less if it was synthetic or if it had Lucas in it..lol.

Love the modded "manche" badges

Interesting. If your back that way get a picture. What area of Vancouver. I have friends there that I visit every month or two. I wonder if it was a old Dodge, they have a "Jeep" look to some of the old ones.

I explained in fact a doorless situation. And yes I have also in person seen doors never be able to be closed once the rig was wheeled without them (been wheeling for close to 20 years). Peronally on my rig.....No, I have always had half doors. Its work to build a good set of half doors. And cool factor...half doors win over no doors. Anyone that appreciates fab work will be impressed with half doors more than just your doors removed. Yes it applys to TJ YJ JK CJ and any other jeep, or $#!& a mazda 626 with no doors as well. But hey, its just my opinion on the matter. Great thing is you can do whatever you like. The drop inside a TJ is twice what a MJ is. Like I said before though, Its just my opinion on the matter. I don't feel its as safe as a set of half doors. So, ya I have proof. I wish I could find the pictures of the guy pinned in the landcruiser.

So I have a leaf spring conversion question as well. Since you have to fab it all up anyway, why would you put the shackles in the front!? -

Went up to Elbi yesterday. Ran Gotcha, Mainline, Rainervista, Alder loop, and the mainline extension. Good day, no body damage(couple spots bed was within a inch of damage though) Nobody had any breaks, although I trashed my gas tank and it almost fell out! I had been contemplating if I was going to build a skid or do a fuel cell so had done neither yet. I think I'm going fuel cell since I really don't like the tank location and how far down it hangs. Here are a couple pictures, by co-pilot John took some too and I might get those and post them later. This was my truck loaded on way home. Four military guys were out for a ride and one got cut off and went down. He was sore but ok. We gave the guy and his bike a ride home to the Fort Lewis East gate on way back to Oly.
