That’s normal. Squishy pedal could be air in the lines. The MJ has a specific sequence of bleeding with a front bleeder open and pressing the brake to move the bypass valve. Search for it, I know it has been posted.
@Pete M if you look at the registry list in the "VIN_Codes" sheet you can decode all VINs which includes 2WD/4WD. Another way is the Body code listed by the build date, a T is 2WD, a J is 4WD for all MJ production years.
Back in 2007 Machinist Workshop Magazine studied some penetrants on rusted bolts/nuts and measured the torque required to break them free (averages listed):
