  1. ha ha. No, she's quite OK my "single" camping. She'll probably like that it will be an RTT for one ... no visitors.

I bought one recently too (Mastercraft though). They're great. I don't know what took me so long!
  3. Thanks! Overall 2020 was a year like I hope we never experience again ... but it was a good one for painting outdoors. I had to pick and choose a bit but the weather really didn't get in the way. I think what helped was that I did it panel by panel with the attitude that each coat wasn't the last. If I had to do a bit more work before the next one I was OK with that. Every once in a while though I'd lay down a coat say ... "that's it!".
  4. That's exactly right about touch ups. Good idea about putting a Jeep axle, springs, etc. under a trailer. We have a small tear drop and an 80's fibreglass camper project that my wife and I camp in. My plan is to build a 1 man side entry clam shell RTT for this one. I'll be able to put 1 kayak and 1 bike on top of it for my single camp and fishing trips. It will be a single RTT for a reason!
  5. I paint a lot of my shop equipment grey and when I painted the trailer I recently completed the same grey last year I thought ... why not? Next thing I knew I was tearing my LJ apart. I've been doing it panel by panel and most have about 4 coats. I have not shot a clear coat or mixed it in with the final colour coats. I will likely buff it out but it won't require much. The gloss is good and the finish is smooth. I've never used ceramic waxes and I might experiment a bit with those. Honestly, I went with enamel because I know this Jeep will get beat up a bit and I want to be able to touch it up or do whole panels easily when I need to. It's not done yet; my "booth" got a bit cold last fall - lol. The weather is good now and I'm back at it. Here's where it stands now along the trailer that will go with it. They've yet to be hooked up to each other. I'm REALLY happy with the colour.
  6. I used to paint Dupont Centari acrylic enamel almost exclusively. Easy to shoot and work with. I got out of painting when Dupont Imron was becoming popular, so quite a while ago. Great paint and tough as you say but isocyanates aren't for amateurs.
  7. I'm with you on metallics. This one is single stage enamel and it's off the shelf Tremclad (Canadian Rustoleum). It's "Gloss Grey" which I think is the same as Rustoleum "Smoke Grey". I like the JK & JL "Sting Grey" and I think the slightly lighter "Anvil Grey" before it. This a bit lighter than those but close.
  8. Here's my paint booth. Lots of fresh air!
  9. They seem to like Comanches.

It's been done and the dessert would certainly help with heat! Dust/sand might be a problem though. lol. I've seen pics of container ovens but not with insulation (interior or exterior). From what I understand there's a point where electrical heat is not going to work and you have to go with propane. I've seen some small ones heated by propane but never big one by electricity.

Thanks. No, I have a lot to learn yet about powder coating so it's for my use and probably a few friends if they want to give it a try. I currently spray a lot of parts (enamel mostly) and I'm sure powder coating will be better once I get the hang of it. I've sealed parts of the oven with a high temp silicone and have some to do yet. I'll be insulating it with Rockwool and then attaching the exterior sheet metal. I'm hoping one bundle will do it. I'm currently building a powder coating oven. The cabinet and door are pretty much done. I have to finish the wiring, add the insulation and skin it with galvanized sheet metal ... plus a lot of other small things. The interior dimensions are 24" W - 18" D - 48" H.
  14. I've heard good things about Evapo-rust but I've never tried it. I use B&G Rust Remover which is a phosphoric acid product. There are other OSPHO products that can be found in places like Home Depot but I am not familiar with them. With B&G it's basically dip and rinse with water. Pretty much anything survives the process except for nonferrous metals and even that would have to be in the tank for quite a while. I also media blast parts. It's more labour intensive but the finish is better for painting or powder coating, not that dipping is bad.
  15. @Scalped I saved this pic some time ago thinking that it might be something I would want to emulate on my '89 2 dr. Limited XJ. It's not much of a paint change, more stripes and coloured wheels, but it looks good (in my opinion). My XJ is white too and like you I wouldn't want to paint the inside of the doors, jambs, engine bay, etc. unless I had to.
  16. I'd probably opt for that '88 Limited too but the two-tone paint and Turbine wheels on the '85 sure looks nice. I have a white '89 2 dr. Limited. I was never a fan of the gold trim and wheels. The previous owner said he removed it all of the gold which is what I would have done too. I've since replaced all of the badges with chrome ones. I also put MOAB wheels on it. Although he said he removed all of the gold he missed the rocker cover. Most of it has worn off but it still has hints of gold paint at the rear. I don't recall Limiteds having gold rocker covers when they were new but I don't ever recall looking either. Mine is pretty original other than the above changes. If anyone can confirm if they came with gold rocker covers I'd appreciate it.
  17. That's too bad. I might be wrong but I think she might still have a few more! If you ask her to keep an eye for you I'm sure she would. I will too.
  18. I'm pretty sure I know who is selling these MJ's. If so, I've dealt with her before on a few things. She's owned several of them, knows her stuff and is honest in her assessment of what she's selling. She's good to deal with. If you like, send me a PM and I can confirm if its the same person.
  19. I figured they just let the old stock dry up and made the change which happened to coincide with the AMC to Chrysler switch. My early '88 MJ has AMC evidence and my mid '89 XJ has none. I bought a new 1990 XJ Laredo and I picked up in Dec. of 1989. My grill related story on that one was that it was stolen in the spring of 1990 one night while it sat in my driveway. At the time I simply thought that someone wrecked theirs and my grill was there for the picking. I have no idea what year the crook needed it for. One thing I didn't know at the time was that it would be the last year for the RENIX models.
  20. I think you're right. I have an '88 MJ (Feb '88) and an '89 XJ (Jul '89) and they're different. Not sure when the change occurred and I doubt it was an AMC to Chrysler thing. Probably more to do with saving a few dollars or getting a new supplier.
  21. I've been working on my powder coating oven build lately. I bought the main components at ReStore about a year ago and as we were in a semi lockdown I finally got going on it. I started with an in wall oven and an office cabinet that's about the size of a 4 drawer file box. The internal dimensions are 24" W x 18" D x 48" H. Up next is to complete the wiring, attach the door, insulate it and skin it with 20g galvanized sheet ... then learn how to powder coat. I have lots to do yet but here's where it stands ...
  22. I put a "Jeep" sticker on the back of my camper trailer to inform people of why I'm driving so slow.
  23. This isn't mine but I had one just like it minus the Mickey Mouse ear lights on the roof back in the mid '70s (red with a white top, doors and wheels). It was a '69 CJ5 set up for snow plowing. It along with other gas station work pretty much got me through college. It had the Dauntless engine which was great. One of my most vivid memories of it was how stiff the clutch was. It was either in or out and not much in between which wasn't the best thing for plowing. It also had a 6' Meyers plow and Meyers half cab and steel doors and that was it, no soft top or doors. I remember in 1974 driving my buddy to the dealership with it to pick up his new CJ5 which was set up the same but with a soft top and doors. It also had a 304 V8 engine. He and I built and raced off road cars together. We had occasional races that included CJ5's which seemed huge next to our VW based buggies.
