I just put mine in last week and I agree the price is awful. I had to replace the broken passenger glass too but luckily I have a parts comanche. The local auto glass place wanted $225 for the glass and more if they had to replace moldings. But the price of these wipes offset my big savings on the used window glass. Anyway, I did it pretty much like you did, but at 17 degrees the rubber is really hard. I had to loosen the bolt at the bottom of the vent window frame to get enough clearance to get the inside wipe behind the vent frame. And beat it into submission with a rubber mallet. Mac...

I got my window wipes from them in less then a week and during the Christmas rush I figured that was pretty good.

Heat shrink butt splicing wires.
AmJay replied to AmJay's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
In the first sentence of my original post, click on the word "these". I should have made it a different color. Click on the "lerning center' on that link it shows the method. I prefer a heat gun since the propane torch I use leaves soot on the shrink wrap. I still do a lot of it the old fashion way, for butt connections these work great. Mac... -
Heat shrink butt splicing wires.
AmJay replied to AmJay's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I usually slide it back on one wire then just butt the 2 wires together so they overlap and intertwine with each other. I strip about a 1/4 to 3/8 inch of insulation off each wire. When you heat it you can see the solder flowing onto the wire because the heat shrink is translucent. So, you know your done when the solder flows. I think they come in different gauges. Mac... -
Heat shrink butt splicing wires.

No they can't they're not crimped. The solder inside the tube melts. That's what the heat gun is for. You end up with the wires soldered together the same as if you used a soldering iron. The tubing has a higher melting point then the solder and just shrinks. You know I can't tell you how many times I've tried to smash that little flea. ;) -
You've probably already installed these by now, but I am in the process of replacing my drivers side window and here's how I'm going to do the wipes I just ordered. Remove the door panel. It's just 3 screws around the door release. and 2 in the arm rest. Then wiggle the door latch through the hole in the door panel. If your arm rests have the door pulls, rotate the arm rest toward the top of the door and pull it off. Once the door panel is off you can remove the torx (or depending on the year there may be a nut) that holds the window glass to the window regulator. This will allow you to drop the glass about 4 inches. You will then have all the clearance you need to remove the old wipes and install the new ones. Oh, also the window crank is just pushed on and you have to pull pretty hard to get it free. I'm not really sure if the wipes will come off or go on without removing the door panel and dropping the window. You'll probably end up taking it all apart if you drop one of the "S" clips that hold the wipe. Mac...

If you haven't tried these you should. They are the next best thing to sliced bread. No more holding wires together and a soldering iron while trying to feed solder to the wire. Just stick the wire in each end and heat it with your heat gun. I've even had good luck with a Bic lighter. The finished connection is as good as you'll get with the soldering iron and the diameter is as close as you'll ever get to the same as the original wire. I've even done multiple splices at once when modifying a connector. I love these things... Mac...

my 1988 jeep comanche "ole rusty"
AmJay replied to freakjeep93's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
My favorite rust removing tool is my sand blaster. However, this time of the year my air compressor isn't up to the task. In fact I drain it in the winter. But, when it's warmer and the humidity isn't too high. Sand blasting is rust's enemy. Mac... -

I was ready to go until I realized the wife's Christmas lights were using my last extension cord. Instead I replaced the broken fresh air hoses and vacuum lines. Runs a little smoother but still have the emissions light. Found a 1989 Comanche Owner's manual in the wreaked Comanche's glove box. If anyone needs one PM me and I'll throw it in the mail.

Thanks for the help guys. I just looked at the replacement regulator again. The holes are threaded so it must have come out of an XJ. I'll probably bolt them in. I have been on the fence whether to go with the fixed vents or not. I still can't make up my mind. Okay, I guess I better get to work on fixing this. Mac...

My used manual window regulator arrived today. How hard is that to install? The old one uses some huge pop rivets. I'm assuming I just drill it out and find some big pop rivets and a bigger gun. Then just pop it in. The glass is laying in little pieces in the bottom of the door. I have another piece of glass. And... I like the vent windows but they just flop in the breeze. The bolt with the spring for adjusting the tension has come loose on the vent window frame. Is there an easy fix for that? I image the frame is hard to find. Also the parts Comanche has fixed vent windows so no parts there. Anyone want to trade? Mac...

Still no cracks as far as I can tell. I ran it idling for well over an hour then shut it off and felt/checked the dip stick for any signs of foaming or increased oil level and all seems ok. No external leaks. Ran it again today. It seems okay, but I haven't got plates for it so I can't really give it a good road test. Mac...

So I just bought this 90 MJ. It's getting really cold here so, I've been concentrating on doing things I can finish before hypothermia sets in. I've been starting it every other day or so and letting it warm up so I can keep the battery charged. We had a Blizzard here last Friday and just before I went to work I reached in and started the MJ and then went off to do a little shoveling. As I walked away I could smell something burning and smoke coming out from under the hood. I reached in and shut it off and poped the hood. The serpentine belt was broke and laying in tight little curls. I started to turn pulleys thinking I probably seized a bearing. The water pump pulley wouldn't turn and was a nice shade of black from rubber off the belt. I opened the resevour for the radiator and stuck my finger in. It was pure ICE. The dumba$$ I bought it from had filled it with WATER... Maybe I'm the dumba$$ for not checking, but who would live in Michigan and have water in there cooling system and in December.. Well, I had to get to work so I couldn't fix it on Friday. Saturday I drove 50 miles (one way) to get a friends heater. Picked up 2 gallons of antifreeze and took the almost new serpentine belt off my parts comanche. I removed all the hoses and took them in the house to thaw out. The heater did the trick and I had about 2 gallons of rusty water in the pan. I refilled it with 50/50 antifreeze for about 1.5 gallons and another half gallon of pure antifreeze to make up for what I'm sure is some water left in the system. I'm not seeing any leaks and the temp is holding just under 210. I'm not ready to say I dodged a bullet, because sometimes water in the oil doesn't show up right away. But how stupid is this? When It gets warmer I'll have to flush the whole system because it looked pretty rusty. Mac...

Fan Pulley Replacement/Elimination
AmJay replied to kro10000's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Could the chirping be coming from the fan clutch and not the pulley? The electric fan sound interesting. Mac... -
The horn will also be different on some Comanches depending on the original steering wheel. On mine there is a plunger on the turn signal cancelling ring. You have to buy the Grant Horn kit which will replace the plunger with a wire. The grant horn kit also includes the horn button and spring. One more thing.. My Grant has Black painted spokes and Grant includes a little piece of adhesive tin foil so the horn will make good contact. I didn't know what that was for? I hate reading instructions. I almost threw it away. The connector for your turn signal switch is on the bottom of your steering column. It's that long flat connector attached to your steering column. If I remember correctly the turn signal indicator wires are terminated in that connector. It's possible the connector became some what separated when you were installing the steering wheel. I'd make sure the connector is snapped on tight before taking too much of the dash apart. Mac

Replacing window rubbers and forward channel
AmJay replied to azscott's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Where did you buy the Wipes? The only one's I could find were $99.00 for all 4. I really only need the outside ones. Opps.. Never mind. I see it was Team Cherokee. The only place I've found that has them. -
I had an FEY bumper. It looked nice but rusted out in about 2 years. In Michigan you can collect $450.00 from the person who was at fault. It's called Mini-torte(sp?). We have no fault insurance and it's supose to cover your deductable or out of pocket expenses. Insurance companies will pay the mini-torte if you have a rider on your insurance. I didn't know that until I had to fork out $450.00 on top of paying the deductable for my own repairs.

If you mean one listed on greatlakes4x4.com? Yep.. I've allready fixed most of the problems listed when it was for-sale.. If the weather would just cooperate..

It should just require a battery and ground source. The window switch in the door switches polarity to the window motor to make it go up or down.

Thanks for the welcome. I probably should have left this in the pub, so I'm quickly asking a tech question... I have a short tail shaft AW4 trans and plan to convert the MJ to 4WD once I get an axle, front driveshaft and xfer case. Do I need a different rear driveshaft or does the 2WD shaft work? I'd like full 4wd instead of the part time 4wd that my XJ has. What's the right xfer case?

Nice job. :clapping: Hey, put some "Lights in Motion" on the tires so it looks like the Jeep is moving.. My first thought was I probably can finish the Jeep project faster then putting up and taking down all those lights.. What does the wife think now?
