1991 eleminator flatbed (with 4 harley mufflers)
jimoshel replied to rain_darkness's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
I'm 75 and dedicated to preserving Jeeps. However I will not hesitate to modify one if I feel the need, nor will I bad mouth anyone who 'does their thing' with one. That is one neat looking rig and you did a hel,,,,er heck of a great job -
Probably a good cleaning will help.Being down by the floor, the reel and wind mechanism gets it's share of crud.

1, Complete and running. My DD 9, Complete and running, except no batteries in them. 1, Complete, Runs, steering linkage broke. 1, Complete, Doesn't run, haven't check into it yet, Turns over and fires but doesn't run. I'd settle for a shot of the new one. :dunno: That I can do

Sounds like a all day fun event. See what i can do.

Drug home my 12th MJ tonite. 1986, 2.5, 5speed, 4WD. Rubbing it in on the 'rustbelt boys' It did have rust, surface only, about the size of a playing card on the transmission hump. A small dent on the left rear fender well. 190K on the clock. $400. When well the madness end? Grabbing every MJ in sight? Hoarding them in the backyard. Guarding them like a mother hen with her chicks. A. When runs out of MJ'S B. Runs out of money. You get one guess. Been a good subject for a poll, if it worked.

AMC V-8 in an 86 MJ Any suggestions
jimoshel replied to az86jeep's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I had a '53 Willys half ton with a service bed on it. It looked OK to me. Had the whole thing painted the same color so there wasn't a mis matched two tone look. Also got to agree with the Buick 215. They were good engines and light weight. I put several of them in Jeeps with excellent results. -
Oil pressure gauge maxed out
jimoshel replied to Dechion's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I believe the ign key has to be on for the sending unit to be in the circuit. If the key is off, then the sending unit is irrelevant. Sounds like the gauge needle is stuck. Try tapping on the cover over the gauge and see if it will swing loose. If that doesn't work remove the clear face and move the needle over to the left, hopefully unsticking it. If that doesn't work, replace the gauge. -

:agree: Getting the motor in the bay is the easiest part of the job. It's finishing it up that's hard. -
A fuel gauge / tank question.
jimoshel replied to Dechion's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You have to get on your back and crawl under the truck so you can look for the leak. Since it does it when you fill the tank I would suspect the large filler hose or the smaller vent hose.Hose is rotted and leaking. A loose fitting is possible but very rare unless you were working on them and didn't put it back together right. Also there are 2 rollover-vent valves on top of the tank, possible source. Then there's the lock ring gasket for the fuel line, fuel sending unit. You just gotta get under and look. Some people can reach the ground by getting under the truck and reaching up. I find it easier to remove the tail light housing. Remove the screw and separate the ground lead. Use sandpaper, steel wool any abrasive and get a nice shiny spot around the screw hole. Then clean the lug on the wire lead. Put everything back together. Apply some paint so the shiny area doesn't rust again. -
I recently purchased a BMW with a V12 for the purpose of installing the V12, with transmission, into a MJ. After thinking about it I decided that it just may be to much of a gas guzzler so I removed 6 of the spark plugs, effectively making a V6 out of it. Got to thinking, 6 empty spaces in a motor, great way to attract critters, spiders etc., so i filled the cylinders with sand to occupy the empty space. Got to thinking, again, sand attracts moisture, Moisture=rust, so i screwed the spark plugs back in. Now I can't get the d*mn thing to turn over. Any suggestions? And don't suggest I should stop thinking. :rotf: :fool:

You seen one V12 you've seen 'em all.

A good start would be to get a FSM, Factory Service Manual. I've seen them on EBay for $25 to $100 bucks. You can also get a FSM CD for $25. The Haynes and Chilton manuals are better than nothing but sometimes lacking when it comes to details.

Voltage drops when hitting bumps???
jimoshel replied to ComancheKid45's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My money is on a intermittent short in the light wiring. Rare but has happened is a loose plate in the battery. Generally one of the posts. With a load on the battery , motor off, tap, wiggle each of the battery posts. -
Stiff Ignition Lock Cylinder
jimoshel replied to Cheech's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Dried out lube, Get some graphite into the cylinder, where the key goes. Remove the steering wheel. Clean and grease the cam assembly and linkage behind the lock cylinder and going into the column. -
Yep. Run the red wire to the positive battery terminal. Run the black wire to the empty terminal on the solenoid and run the clear wire to the battery negative. By jove,,,I believe he's got it... Don't mean to confuse the issue but I finally found my Meyers manual. Meyers shows the solenoid in the positive cable. Not the negative. No biggy as it will work either way but if you want to go by the book then run the red wire to the empty terminal on the solenoid. Run the black wire to battery negative. Run the clear wire to battery positive. :thwak:

I didn't think FIAT "owned" control of Jeep, they just have a 20% stake, no? Rob L. Does that mean no V12???? Shucks,,,Puts check book away.
-
The clear wire from the control toggle goes to the center terminal of the solenoid. The red wire from the pump goes to the Pos terminal of the bat. The black wire from the pump goes to the Sol. Then run a wire, normally black but any color will work, from the other sol terminal to the neg post on the bat. Seems like that may be the clear wire your talking about.

Jeep is owned by Italians??? So when are we gonna see resurrected MJ with a Lamborghini V12, or a racing Grand Cherokee with a Maserati V12??? Where do I send the check???

You lucky son of a... Rob L. ;) Gun? -
I stand corrected on the bolt pattern. However I stick to the statement about the center. Got a nice 5 spoke wheel with a jagged hole where the center cap USED to be.
-
The lug pattern is the same. The problem may be with the hub, Some years and models were different for 2WD and 4WD. When you go to tighten them down the hub will poke thru the center cap. Just put one on and slowly tighten it. Keep rotating the wheel as you tighten. If it turns after tightening all lug nuts your OK. If it starts getting hard to turn before all nuts are tight, it ain't gonna work. Been there, Done that!
