Get remote mount coil pack brackets. Way easier than modifying the heater core/firewall

To LS or Stroker... That is the question
Comanche SS replied to howeitsdone's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It wouldn't be hard at all to make low end torque with an LS, literally a camp swap away from having a better torque curve and high end than a 4.0, if that's a concern. I agree with the statement about obd2 and parts availability, although I haven't had the issues you have with the 4.0 at least hard parts -

If you really don't intend on going fast, a stroker is the way to go. But take what @neohic said too, he wouldnt do it again. an LS is a lot of work if you really only want to go a little faster. -

Have you considered boosting a refreshed 4.0? You can do all the gaskets and seals on the 4.0 for less than $200, figure a grand or two to boost it (if you are resourceful) and thus you won't have altitude problems. I have had a few grands as well, and the thing that really stands out more than the power is the transmission technology. Sounds like you have Hemi WK2, I had one too, and towing is a breeze, and that is due mostly to the trans I feel. After all, a V6 Ram 1500 or WK2 can still tow better than a 4.0 Jeep, not cause it has gobs more power, but a little extra power and a better trans can go a long way. Now to answer how to do that, I dunno, A little boost and a good AX15 should get you close to your goal it sounds like do a lot less than a stroker or LS swap... But take what I say with a grain of salt, I have a boosted LS and a trans that was idealized in the 60's. The new 8, 10, 12 speed transmissions from 2015+ are really amazing -
SRT Comanche build

@Pete M @89 MJ @mnkyboy Does this need a kick over to Epic soon? I like where this is going..Saw you post about it on FB earlier today or yesterday...I like the progress although I am not a ford powertrain person, I can appreciate it. Any plans for the motor? What ECU/TCU? Looks like staying 2WD? -

Strokers are cool, but LS are cooler A built stroker will have around the same power as a basic LS...So it depends on your end goal. Will this be the one and only time you will want more power out of the truck? If so, a stroker would be easier...but if you are gonna do it and then want more later, an LS with a holley is the way to go for sure. I am around $6500 into my Supercharged LS, with a Holley ignition and 4L80E...But I cut some corners and got some screaming good deals on stuff, I would think 8-10k for a pretty good LS swap is reasonable. I have buddies with strokers, and they have there fair share of problems and annoyances too. Just think what you want long term and plan from there -
This happened...Sweeet On another sidebar note: Got my family heirloom down from the rafters and got it on the road again...With one dog recovering, my other dog is restless and getting rebellious so I need to burn energy. An original 1982 Redline MX-II, bought by my dad new, then hand me down to cousin, then my brother...then my dad and I restored it, and before too long it'll be a son of mine on it.

Yep, and keep an eye out for good deals, I am not into mine for nearly as much as some would think. It helps to be resourceful with parts, and active as much as possible on local marketplaces, classifieds etc. -

don't fret, we all started somewhere, mine was bone stock when I got it, and 4 years later its as you see in the photos. Take your time and do it right, the guide I gave you up above is a simple crash course in the wealth of knowledge I have gathered over the course of quite a long time. If you can get a handful of those parts youll be on the right track, if you get all of them then your jeep will be able to handle its own business LOL....Good luck, I'd like to see more long travel comanches out there.... -

Yes and no...4400 Cars are required to do both, and very often they are solid front axle, a proper setup front end can do both adequately, neither perfectly. Perfect example is the CutlerFab Comanche, or the Zone Comanche, or the DKA Motorsports one. Those all have done crawling and high speed decently. But you are right in the fact that if you want to do one more seriously than the other, than pick a lane. My build for example is strictly for go fast, crawling would be a nightmare in it, but I have other jeeps for that. Proper front end setups can range from 5k-100k in the 4400 cars for example. It is all in how much knowledge and time you put into it. Jake, Good on you for asking for help, my reply earlier this morning was half asleep laying in bed before work so I couldnt comprehend much LOL There are a couple resources you will want to look into. NAXJA Jeepspeed Forums are a big one, There are a couple shops in Socal that specifically build that type of stuff. T&J Fabrication is a big one that Jeepspeed guys use, a quick google and phone call can answer a lot of your questions, they also happen to sell a lot of jeepspeed upgrades -Ask T&J about the shock mounts - Front bar pin delete, weld in double sheer upper shock mounts -JeepSpeed guys used to really like the BDS/Full Traction long arm kit, before that it was the Skyjacker Mid-arm kit, but thats discontinued. The NEW best kit is hands down the Stinkyfab 4 link, followed closely behind is Ironman4x4 - You will want a double sheer track bar bracket, preferably with a crossmember tie in, see Rubicon Express or Ironman4x4 for the two best options there. - You will want to retain y-link steering to avoid bump steer, two options, one way better than the other...Some guys use the grand Cherokee steering, stronger than XJ/MJ...The much better option is Currie Currectlync steering, 10x than any other y link in every way. - You will need a steering box brace, look up ironman4x4 option, there is dirtbound and barnes4wd too, get one with the steering shaft support bearing. (there is an ebay knock-off that is $115 that is ideally what you will end up getting. -You have to decide if you want to build to class rules or not if you ever plan to enter races...keep this in mind when choosing shocks, cage details etc. -Seeing as you likely have a D44 (if you don't then get something stronger) If you do, truss it, and add disc brakes. Dana 30 disc brakes are a good option for rear Dana 44's -Plate the frame, pick your brand and weld away, I went with T&M stiffeners on mine for the 10ga. option. -If you arent building to class rules, ditch the stock shock mount locations, add towers or hoops and add coil overs. (and bypasses if you feel fancy) This is a lot to process, and your wallet will be hurting, don't think in thousands, think in tens of thousands...True purpose built prerunners run upwards of 750k-1M (I know from experience) Reach out to me if needed, I'm sure you will have questions along the way. -
Updates...have not worked on the Comanche much other than small odds and ends that I didn't get to when thrashing to finish it... In the meantime picked up two more XJ's. The lady and I will be moving to a southern state within the next 6mos-year and needed to get rid of our city cars (and there respective payments) I opted for the golden year 1999, PW, PL, PM 4x4 4.0 NP231 Dana 30HP/8.25...Super clean AZ jeep, clean title and all for $2k The lady is not much of a enthusiast so it came down to two options...the "Jurassic park" jeep or an old wood trimmed jeep. With no rush to find one, I just waited while checking the local market...eventually I found a 1987 Cherokee Wagoneer Limited, PW, PL, PM, 4x4 NP242, Dana 44/Dana 30HP and Power seats, has more options than my 1999. This jeep is also pretty clean, from CA, and cost me $1700 Got really lucky finding these two at the price compared to what my local market is asking...Normal run of the mill XJ's can be $10k in Socal. Both of the jeeps need or have needed small things like maintenance or cooling upgrades etc...nothing unusual, oddly enough they both have lower miles the the MJ did, and the Wagoneer has less miles than all of them! The MJ will get some more small stuff for awhile, since we plan to move the large projects are pretty much on hold. But I'm still around just plugging away at little details among the three jeeps.

Thanks Neohic! Jake, Feel free to reach out to me with questions, I'm one of the resident prerunner guys here, although I ditched the straight axle I still know a lot about the setups. Look into jeep speed. If you browse through naxja there is a jeep speed section entirely. -
Thank you Sir! Ha! Ill get some photos of that someday...in the meantime I picked up two more jeeps to build so the time will come...

Lots has happened since my last build update, I have been in crunch mode to get it done...and I am happy to say I got it out for some driving and glamour shots...More work to be done, but its on its own weight and under its own power.

Another Vote for Ford/Chevy axles, even 3/4 tons would be fine for what it sounds like your doing. If you have any questions for the LS swap let me know, I'm in the middle of a supercharged LS/4L80 swap. -
Should have clarified, 21'' metal to metal, will strap around 19-20 likely. Still more than enough
