  1. Hey HOrnbrod... guilty as charged. Maybe minus the 6v positive ground electrical system. I mean realistically if you found a completely unmolested, low mile Comanche for ( enter your ridiculously low price) you’d jump all over it. With that in mind I would highly doubt IMHO that you’d swap brakes, rear diff, throw a lift kit on, change all the suspension and do a complete 97 interior upgrade... just saying. You may though and that would be your choice. In the end though, I still have to get rear brakes!!!
  2. CoolWind... correct I’m in Lake County! Yes the vehicle is on a roller type process to check. So again it failed because on the roller it wasn’t able to slow down in time. I’m almost positive you can’t just pick a random county to title in. You would have to show proof of residency( in that county), as well as have your insurance from that residence.
  3. In order for the emission test to run its cycle the car must be able to come to a dead stop from say 50-0. This has to be within an allotted time. We obviously are talking seconds here! It didn’t brake to zero in the time given. So the emissions test was deemed incomplete( a failure) Emission output I’m sure is tested as it’s attempting to go through this braking cycle. I’ve tried to get antique plates( still need emissions), show plates( which is exempt but you need to meet specific criteria, which I don’t) and the only thing left would be to try and title in another county ( which seems to be the most viable option except all the paperwork.) So with all that being said that’s why I was just going to repair rear drum brakes.
  4. It failed because they put it basically on a dyno. Rear wheels spin and the emissions guy runs it through the gears(4spd). It failed because the rear brakes must be able to slow the vehicle to zero from say 50 in a certain time period. It did not. The guy there told me rear brakes were bad which I knew were not that great to start with. He did try to assist it by downshifting a little but to no avail. My e brake does function but they don’t really check that.
  5. I hear ya Pete. But..... I swapped my steering gear box for another... manual steer!! So I will probs just keep it drum. As far as load sensing valve, I’ve never messed at all with that. My Jeep spends more time sitting in garage than ever carrying a load. It’s hooked up but I know I need rear brakes. Thanks DesertRat. That was the kit I was looking at!
  6. 87 2.5 RWD Dana 35 stock rear drum.Took my girl in for emissions today. Fully expecting to fail, which she has the last three times, she didn’t let me down and the streak stays intact! This time though it was due to poor rear brakes which didn’t allow vehicle to slow in the allotted time. So I guess she really didn’t fail the actual emissions since it was incomplete! I looked on line to search out brake kits, complete with new drums, pads, springs etc... Are these kits worth it? Or just get the basic hardware. I’ve never have done rear drums before but I’m ready to give it a go... a little beer.. swearing... and bloody knuckles!! Also anyone used a complete brake kit like these before? If so any recommendations for brake kit used and a part number? Thanks. Mostly I’ve seen info on the upgraded booster and swap to rear discs here. Just keeping it old school.
  7. Ad says less than 75,OOO original miles....Odometer reads 85,224.... Has only 3 issues.... 2 of which you could repair in the time it takes to read this. Still looks like a nice truck.
  8. -17 windchill this morning at Ohare Airport... Had to do the warm water in a cup trick. Turned to snow as soon as I threw it in the air.. Fun times!
  9. ‘Sun rot...’ I’ve never heard that term. I’m from the rust belt. ‘Sun rot’ sounds like a good trade off! Congrats on getting your old truck back. I bought my high school car back ( ‘70 Malibu) when I got out of the service. Didn’t go as well as your buy back! Frame was too far gone and I ended up taking it to the crusher. Learned a valuable lesson about nostalgia and my money(again). Best of luck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. Semper Fi! Any pics? Retro markings would be neat. Have to include your units line number! I remember off loading MPS ships and finding our units Vic’s by those markings.
  11. Thanks for the info guys! Like I said I don’t have a lot of experience with 4x4. Just didn’t want to miss something obvious!!! Like the missing driveshaft😀
  12. Thanks for your response! If there’s no illumination could it be something as simple as light is out? So while sitting, engine running, in nuetral(manual) I should be able to cycle through 4h 4l than correct? Thanks again.
  13. No in Chicago area.
  14. Going to check out an 88 4.0 4x4. Now as an 87 2.5 RWD owner what should I be looking for? I have the basics down as undercarriage, the usual rust areas and drivability but as far as the 4x4( and having not owned one) what areas should I check? I know it’s manual but the ad I read was extremely vague. Not even sure if it’s a 4 or 5 spd. The owner I’ve texted doesn’t know much about the Jeep( other than wanting to restore it) and I may need to bring along a translator. So I guess what specifically concerning the 4 wheeldrive should I look at? Will I be able to access the ability of everything running as it should be engaging the 4 wheel?Any helpful tips much appreciated! A noob to 4x4 Jeep Comanches!
  15. I’m here like most people to tap into the vast knowledge of all the moderators and fellow Comanche owners. In essence though we literally are a dying breed. The last Jeep Comanche rolled off the assembly line in 1992. I’m sure each year dozens of Comanches( maybe less/more meet the crusher after being picked clean. I’m glad we have this forum. I appreciate the people running the page as well as the vendors offering their services. Keeping things fun like Krusty is trying to do appeals to me. To each their own! Just my $.02.
  16. I have all caps COMANCHE on my 87 Jeep. I know the P.O. and he never changed. Early 87 build so just figured they used stock 86 emblems up until gone.
  17. Remember too 1/2 the carpet will be covered by seats and floor mats! Do the best job you can. I let my carpet ‘relax’ a few days as well before installation. Since it’s already getting a little chilly and rainy by me I wasn’t able to leave it out in the warm sun for awhile. I think that would have helped me a bit more. Remember too, don’t compare to photo above!!!...Horns truck looks like it just rolled off the assembly line!!!! Patience Grasshopper! Good luck
  18. Just installed carpet last week. I must say it takes some time. The carpet is oversized and had to be trimmed at least a few inches around all edges. I bought carpet with the mass backing. It’s not really shape friendly shall I say. I had a buddy with a heat gun but the carpet I feel was still too thick to make any difference. All I can say is patience. I’m probably about 80% ok with the outcome.
  19. The headliner screams 'Cheap Trick' to me!! (Showing my age there) As far as the paint job I kinda like it. Happy belated 242 Devil. Semper Fi.
  20. I really liked the look of the Comanche they bought before the make over! Just wondering if it was a members here? I know they said they bought it in North Carolina. It was a clean 87. Somebody loved that truck!
  21. Ok thanks. Maybe the P.O. had it there for some type of ground. That’s all I could think of. Just wanted to make sure I didn’t forget hooking something up.
  22. Yes you’re correct. It’s not a clear pic but it’s a stud just inside the black area in the pic on passenger side.I have a bench seat and all connections are accounted for. Seat belts all have bolts that are screwed in. This is a fixed bolt. I remember seeing it when I got rid of the carpet. Just couldn’t remember if any wires were attached to this. The only other wires I have near that area go to the console lighter by the shifter. Thanks for the reply though!
  23. Putting my interior back together. 87 2wd 4 spd. I’m putting the carpet back in and for the life of me I can’t remember was something connected here? There’s an all thread on the passenger side of trans tunnel. Was this a ground? Maybe something for a 4x4 not my 2wd?Thanks for answer!
  24. Fantastic job! Nice job finding that lower cab window trim panel! Paint and body work looks great!
