Need an inner shift boot. Where can I find one?
knever3 replied to MCF90's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs

So someone finally asked this question, hmmm So here is a follow up question: Did they make the three spoke steering wheel leather wrapped in BLACK? I would like a black three spoke with the round Jeep horn button but don't think I can wrap it to look factory myself, plus the button would still be gray. Is there an aftermarket place that can do this and how much typically?? O, and by the way, authough it does look old school I think i'm driving a '87 celebrity!!

I have had a great experience, knoledgeable guys and fast shipping. The only complaint is when they shipped my 3" front springs littered with "Fragile, Glass, Do Not Drop" the UPS guy came up to my front door and instead of walking up the two cement stairs he decided to throw the box onto the porch against the door. Come on UPS, now that you saved a ton of money by alleviating left turns how bout you put some money on common sense training.

If you want to ruin your axle and possibly your u-joints, trans etc. let time tell. If you run out of fluid bad stuff can happen. I watch mine and if one leaked that bad I would start looking for another axle, not a Dana 35 if this is what you have. In my opinion it's not cost effective to have a shop press the bearings and races off and on just to change the seals. If you do that you should buy new bearings. For what it would cost you could upgrade to a D44 or a 8.25 crysler.

That was the most concise answer I have ever gotten on anything. It wasn't the most engineer jargon laden piece but it doesn't need to be. I understand everything now. Thanks for your time and I will now be able to really look for a donor. If the trans is bad I will just have it rebuilt and suck it up. I think the truck is getting a little overpriced but I can't seem to stop now and compromise what I really want. Sometimes you want the easy out, but in the end I want to be happy. Thanks so much for your advice.

I have a ba-10 now, going to a aw4 auto.

Does it blow hot air ALL the time? If not water is not getting by the thermostat. The mileage is probably O2 related, I had a grand prix that ran rich because the temp would not let it go into closed loop so it ran rich like mentioned above. If the pressure cap isn't holding it will overheat very easy, do you have a pressure tester for the cap and pressure bottle? The water pump may not be flowing water good enough or there is some blockage, you should notice with irregular hot and cold air through the heater.

I have been up and down on this one. If I find a suitable donor again '87-'90 for the trans and transfer case should I have the trans rebuilt before installing? I can't see putting a 160k trans and transfer case into a newly restored truck. If I had to what would be the cost of doing so? I thought about buying a newer (post '91) trans but I guess the electrical connectors don't mesh. I want to buy a donor truck for all the necessary parts but don't want get stranded when the aged trans or xfer case clunks out on me. Has anyone had their trans and transfer case rebuilt and how much should I expect to pay?

Recommendations for spark plugs
knever3 replied to Virginia's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
e3 spark plugs are what I would use, they won't open up like regular plugs so the gap will stay consistant. Horsepower TV tested them and got more power better mileage and lower emmissions by using these plugs. They are not overly expensive like the Bosch platnium plugs either. http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/details/QQJeepQQCherokeeQQE3QQSpark_PlugQQ19782001QQPYRE358.html?apwcid=P1135867996W43b3f85c7ab9e&apwid8I1V365 -
'87 BA10/5 to AW-4 auto question
knever3 replied to knever3's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I am not going with an HO post '91 swap, I'm asking if I have to change the engine wire harness if I go with the '87-'90 donor. -
'87 BA10/5 to AW-4 auto question
knever3 replied to knever3's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
So with this message I DO have to change the whole engine wire harness?? Is the engine harness for the manual lacking the connectors for the auto transmission harness?? I would rather not change the harness because I feel mine is in good shape and a donor may not. -
You are not alone, it's hard to find anyone worth the trouble to give money to without seeing their work. The problem is with the insurance jobs they would rather get a job done fast and cheap and get paid like the job was done at the dealer. It is a corrupt system and thankfully there is a few good eggs left that are willing to do a good job because they care about quality work. If I had the means to do custom work and the time I would do it just to say I did it. I am not willing to buy all the tools and build a pole barn just for that unless I won the lotto. A rock and a hard place indeed, but you're not the only one.

In my Mj it does not appear to be a seperate harness... I don't see the connectors to plug in the AW4 plugs. It appears to all be part of the body harness on the 88 XJ I'm using as a donor. Any help? Do i really need to swap the whole Harness? I will have to correct myself. The transmission harness is part of the engine bay harness...NOT part of the dash harness. the tranny computer harness is also part of the engine bay harness. it enters the firewall on the passenger side behind and to the pass. side to the rear of the engine. the TCU is located under the knee board. to do an aw4 TO 5 speed swap, you do not need to replace the harness...you can splice the trans harness connectors together, and swap the ECU and remove the TCU. however, you cannot do a 5 speed TO auto swap without swapping the entire engine harness, or doing some heavy duty wiring to install wires that simply don't exist in the 5 speed harness. So if I am reading this you need the entire engine harness to switch from a BA10/5 manual trans to a AW-4 auto trans? If so what donor should I go with? Am I stuck with '87-'90 XJ's and MJ's? Or can I use parts up to say 1998? I thought the TCU was a stand alone harness and didn't have to be wired into the factory engine harness. I am looking for a donor automatic XJ so these questions are very important. Help please??

how many cranks before it starts?
knever3 replied to MJ86YJ90's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
^^^^ I agree if you prime the ignition aka fuel pump before cranking it starts faster. -
Well since no one was willing to give you advice here goes. First: Get rid of those spring spacers and buy the right springs for your 3" lift. The springs will be stiffer than the OEM ones you have and due to the age and fatigue of the steel, thus the ride height will be higher than stock and have more capacity. Second: After installing said springs see how far your plow weighs your truck down in front. Third: If needed install a set of acos adjustable spring spacers, these are all aluminum and they have built in bump stops. They add 1.5" of lift minimum. Don't try to get 4.5" of lift with these, get the proper 3" lift springs and these if still not enough. Don't cheap out on front suspension parts, the oem springs are around 170# rating, the aftermarkets are usually around 240# so they will support the plow much better than the oem springs will.

Have you changed your fluid and filter lately? I changed it in my '98XJ and the shifts were much smoother, at first I didn't like it but after it was so nice.

Selling things or buying things on CL is always going to be a great or a horrible experience. Some are trust worthy and most are not. I have been on the good side for a long time trying to sell one parts Comanche. The buyer says he'll stop over tonight and never shows time after time. And usually they try to low ball you before even seeing the goods. That is a slap in the face and I will never change my price without cash in hand and face to face. I did buy my current black comanche off CL and drove 12 hours to get it. If the owner had someone to buy it cash in hand he could/would have sold it. But with all your experience would you??? Tough times and fickle people always lead to disappointment.

The "Jeep" was removed from the t-shirt, and the shirt was put back up with only the picture. Sorry for the inconvenience. Will be looking into other options, like "comanche", or even JEEP. Zazzle was unclear about this when emailed and asked.

She is willing to take the time to make custom orders and you can pick what media you would like to put it on. Keychain, cup, apparel, and stamps!!! She said she would enjoy that if she had a picture to go off of and other ideas. I have been looking for so long for Comanche shirts and stuff, who knew that it would come to me!!

My girlfriend last Feb decided she'd suprise me with the MS Paint picture, yesterday she decided she'd one up herself and create a t-shirt with a background. This is how it turned out. I was clued in on this by another member and to her disappointment and my surprise the cat's out of the bag. She said she's up for custom pictures if someone is willing to have their truck put into artwork and screen printed on an item. http://www.zazzle.com/jeep+comanche+gifts

UCA axle bushings - how to remove
knever3 replied to jeepcoma's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Why? The new replacement ones are so cheap it's not worth the effort, the old stamped C-channel steel gets fatigued so just replace the arms with new ones and call it a day. Here they are: http://www.quadratec.com/products/56015_004.htm?sgsc=QSHOPGBASE&utm_medium=compshop&utm_source=googlemerchant Or from Rock Auto from $27.29 each -
I have heard random things about bad gas but if you use the White jugs of synthetic mix (instead of Orange) in your oil this won't be a problem. As for the revving over 750rpm's I am unfamilliar with that, sounds stupid for a chainsaw to have a low limit on revs. I too checked out Dolmar at my local store and they are nice saws, but the new ones come with a catalytic converter so the power is way down. Emissions crap because no one can make a 4 stroke chainsaw with enough power but without weighing 30 pounds. Here is a review I ran across: http://products.howstuffworks.com/stihl-ms-250-c-be-gas-chain-saw-review.htm

Automatic or ax-15 231J combo? Advice needed.
knever3 replied to knever3's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I don't want the automatic just for cruise and yes I know you don't have to downshift for stop lights, it was just for example. If I wanted a stick I would buy a fun sports car. I want this truck to be easy to drive and I haven't taught my girlfriend to drive a stick yet. Does anyone want to trade the setup I have for a donor Automatic XJ?? I know it's a LOT more work to install the auto but in the end I don't want any excuses why I don't drive it much.
