I fianally got around to adjusting that Novak adapters cable shifter so I figured I'd find some mud. On a shake down trip I found a dirt road I didn't know about only a mile and a half from the house. The road is soft on the surface for about 3-4" then it is frozen, just like spring. I didn't want to get into anything rough because my wife was at home fast asleep. Here are a few shots. I wired my rear view mirror up the other day too. It has the nice switches and it stays on while I get in to put the key into the ignition.

Hell Creek 3" rear springs rough ride question??
knever3 replied to knever3's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Wow, that's a lot of info. After removing one leaf, the second from the bottom the truck rides much better. It dropped about 1/2" to 1" but that's what I wanted to level it out. It still has plenty of load capacity because I've hauled a lot of stuff since I put the truck back together. I had the leafs blasted and repainted with a tough epoxy primer and black paint over that. I replaced the center bolts because they are fine thread and when you back them out they mash the threads pretty easily, just a stop by fastenall and a few bucks later and I was back in business. I used JKS shackles when I put them back in because my bushings were old. Just after I installed them the first time. After maybe 200 miles in the summer. Removed for repaint. Reinstalled. -
I did not know that, thanks.

My glove box wouldn't open ('87 Comanche) after I locked it so after dissasembling the front the lock is trashed. :fs1: Is there somewhere you can buy a new one? I have a black one so I will need another black one to replace it with a working key.

Great, glad to see someone in the UK that loves Jeeps, not Land Rovers. And don't get me wrong a Land Rover Defender V8 would be awesome, not to mention a Mercedes Unimog!!

Bad @$$, keep up the good work. I would love to see the progress thanks for the pictures and the info, very interesting. -
Sweet! I had my chance to get a kohler 14kw generator. I went to Lowes to get a new washer and dryer, I only could fit one in my XJ at the time so I told them I'd make two trips. On my second trip back I went in to pick up my dryer and before I could say dryer the woman said, "Generator"? At that moment I was conflicted with doubt. That little devil on my left shoulder was poking me with his stick "SAY YES!!". I could not knowing my guilty conscience would get the best of me. :fs1:

:hijack: You REALLY need to post more pictures of your truck. I love that combo, I have to say '86 was the best year of the MJ, the best options, color combos, AMC 20 rear end etc. Ok before someone chimes in on the negative side the 2.8 and trans was the weak link that can be upgraded. Awesome truck, hope to see more pics soon.

:agree: That's what I have, I put storage insurance on it when I'm not driving it for a while since I have too many cars to drive at the same time.

Nice work!

The factory radio isn't sensitive to ground shorts, most of them are common ground so what might make a new radio to quit playing audio won't necessarily cut out an OEM one.

You could put it up on 4 jack stands and run it up to various speeds, use a stethescope or stick to probe the case to see where the sound is originating from.

You can also get some liquid graphite from your local locksmith, it works wonders. You just spray it in the key cylinder and it usually frees it up.

I'm still looking for an MJ specific topper, I drove to Ohio for one and was misinformed and wasted a trip. Hopefully someone has one to offer me? Thanks!

My 1988 MJ RestoMod/Tribute (New pics 01.09.12 on p4)

Call a LineX distributor and they will probably say they use a tape with an embeded wire so when they peel the tape it makes a clean line. -
I sold that one because the trans and wiring ended up being fubar so it went up north to Traverse City to someone who wanted a trail truck.

I have 5-1/4" components in the doors and nothing in the rear. Personally I don't see any need to have rear speakers trying to pull the sound stage back under the back seat. :hmm: I mounted my speakers behind the door steel because that made the grill fit flush and didn't interfere with the window crank. You can put 6-1/2" speakers in the doors but you run the risk of getting close or contacting the window crank. I don't like rubbing the skin off my fingers when I roll down the window. I have a 13" sub in the back for low frequencies, unless you are using an Alpine Drive series deck with 60x4 I would look into an amp.

I think it was my fault, I measured center to center of the U-Joint, maybe I used the old yolk before knowing that the splines from the ba/10 and the 242 were different lengths. I had a measurement written down on a sticky and before I left the shop I re-measured it. Spot on and unfortunately wrong for me.

Clutch Replacement/Diagnosis
knever3 replied to xjrev10's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It sounds crazy but have you tried to move it when it's in 1st gear or any gear? If you try to start it (outside!) in gear does it move? The clutch should be engaged without the pedal pushed in because the pressure plate at rest mates the flywheel to the clutch disk because of the springs on the pressure plate. If the truck freely moves in gear you have some things to look for. First you may have a couple of springs bad on the pressure plate, second the clutch disk may be shot, third the pressure plate might be stuck aka rusted. You trans might be bad too. Try reverse also.
