  1. They seem to be fine now and th lower gears are awesome. The old ones had sort of a bad wrap since the planetary gear pins could 'work out' but for the last few years they just weld them in.
  2. excatly how did you "smoke" it? i think i oversped the motor and cooked something, i was going about 85 mph on the highway when all of a sudden it started popping/surging/losing power, until the fastest i could go was about 50... got off the highway at the next exit, and at this point you could tell there was a skip, and it was shooting a cloud of thick blue-grey smoke out the tailpipe.. i opened the hood, and EVERYTHING was soaked with oil, i think it came out of the breather at the top of the valve cover but i'm not sure.. started it up and figured out the #1 jug had a dead skip, spark getting to the plug but not firing... pulled the plug out and the end of it was covered with a ton of greasy black goop... threw a new plug in it, and the dead skip was still there, so i'm thinking that maybe the rings had it :dunno: :huh???: 85? One of those huge hills of RI must have helped you get the 2.5 to 85.
  3. I will second this. I had 4 231s apart and the input shaft varied in 3 of the units. I would establish EXACTLY what spline you have (probably 21 spline) and get the TC you need. If it were up to me I would say get the 231 as I have seen more 242s fail than 231s and the 231 TC was spec'd far more often.
  4. It depends on the year. The older ones lock the two driveshafts together even though the t'case is divorced from the tranny. I think they changed it around 1994 but I'm not certain on the year. My 1994 XJ wasn't a true neutral
  5. Alpha Guy wasn't me :D I have a used switch to replace and find out. Keep your fingers crossed :wavey: My MJ is FULL of electrical bugs. I placed a second fuse panel under the dash and started migrating things over as I address them. When I got the rig it was hammered $#!& with aluminum foil shoved in the fuse block and things half working. Making progress but I fear I may be months away from figuring out all my bugs.
  6. What's up with your nicknames? Can you have a ground that's kind of/almost bad? How do you manage a 3V drop in current? Nicknames? I haven't dug into my issue yet. I just have the same dash issue with the right turn signal lit when power is on. My dash lights don't illuminate either. :shake:
  7. Ha! I am with the Alpha-Guy and his (listed) problems. I have the same dash problem :/ Ground huh :dunno:
  8. The EGR helps reduce NOX. The cat has nothing to do with NOX or eliminating NOX. HOs are harder to pass because of this. I don't know about Georgia SMOG tests but you will not pass a visual out here without the EGR.
  9. What are you going to do about the EGR?
  10. Maybe for the OP but not for me. I have a brand new cat and exhaust.
  11. I ran an additional ground so that wasn't it. I checked the power to the fuel injectors and they all checked out. We pulled spark plugs while running and it is cylinder 6 that makes no difference. I changed the fuel injector on cylinder 6 and that didn't work. Did a pressure test on it and it lost some (50%). Cylinder 6 also was the lowest on the compression test too (125 when the others were 130-150). Some buddies think it might be the head gasket. I find it hard to beleive that I potentially damaged a head gasket in the driveway moving it 40 feet once a day.
  12. I have a brand new ground but my battery ground is not very nice. I should make a new one tonight out of some welding cable I have.
  13. I made my own which is pretty similar to the RE setup. Was pretty easy to make them and took a day to do both.
  14. I am in the same boat. :hijack: Tried IAC (2 of them), MAP, Both CPSs (Cam/distributor and crank), spark plugs, EGR, TPS, compression tested the engine, wires, O2 sensor (2 of them), checked all the intake and TB bolts for leaks and changed the air filter :rotf: Next on the list is the checking power to the injectors and then maybe swapping them out with some spares. Funny thing about this is it went bad and went bad QUICK.
  15. And what magical locking devices may they be?
  16. It is a step back to run front leaves and most likely way more work. The front suspension set up is already nice and works well.
  17. Yes it can.
  18. ha! That's Led's rig. I haven't seen it in a while though. He slapped that thing together quick too when it was done. Pete, your drawn design is the way to go. We have this one here at the house and it is similar to what you drew up.
  19. Jet does not even support these anymore. They put one in a rig racing the KOH and it actually lost 1MPH on it's top speed and they pulled it back out. Save your money.
  20. I hooked the reverse lights up to a switch. Besides that I haven't done much with them either. Willy HA! I am not the only one. :D
  21. The throttle bodies don't necessarily need to be swapped, just a couple of holes tapped for a sensor. I think it was the TPS, but don't remember for sure. He has a manual. It does not have the Renix AW4 TCU. Willy I swapped the throttle body as well for one from an auto. It was just easier.
  22. What problems did you have with the wiring? Did you end up going with a column shift or something? Willy No problems other than the reverse lights (haven't found it easily nor have I put much effort into that one). I did the floor shifter. I have two TCs so I thought the floor would be A-OK. I really need to make a photo journal of what I have done (seems like everything). I am still not convinced my torque converter locks but I am changing the tires this weekend and they should be easier to push and smoother than what I have been driving around with. I will test it more and then figure it out.
  23. I did it......it sucked. I would never recommend doing it again. Quite a bit of work and a LOT of parts needed. The steering column/brake pedal/shifter swap was less fun than stabbing the tranny. The 98 tranny will be fine. Your steering column will be suspect due to the wiring being different. Make sure you can read wiring schematics well. ;)
  24. There is the pics I need :wavey: I need to get my rear trimmed like that ASAP before I head off to Sierra fest.
  25. I never recommend pulling both the drivelines. One should be installed in case one gets in a pickle and has to get out of a tight location/spot (backing with a flat towed vehicle just doesn't work). Also, if one does not have a SYE, one may dump fluid out the back of the TC.
