Let's Go Camping!!!!!!
BootsNTrucks replied to benjy_26's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I got a Knaack Gang box mounted in the back of the truck with 4 1/4" bolts with big ole washers on it. That box is not being broken into. looks like this http://www.knaack.com/jobsite_storage_equipment/view_products.php?p_id=2 Mine happens to be a Knaack, which is like buying the Craftsman tool over the Husky tool just more money. Thank fully i picked it up off craigslist cheeeap ($30). There are plenty of other companies with better prices and theres not really much of a difference. Wish I coulda found a bigger one but after buying the truck, fixing the problems, and buying school parking permit I was running a bit low and i needed a box. And as for the dual batteries I am not running a dual battery system. Too much work right now. I just go and yank the battery out of the girlfriends Civic and take it with me :rotf: I carry a multimeter (might want to add to list or at least a test light) and if the battery gets low (never has but if it did I plan to) recharge it with the truck.- 31 replies

From previous experience you are gunna have some issues mounting the cross member to support the tranny and transfer case. True almost every hole its there already (should have to drill 2). I would go out and buy a $#!& ton of RIV Nuts so you can secure it. Also you should have to fab up a custom way to attach the cross member to the tranny

When I blew a the rear oil seal (in the middle of literally nowhere) on the BA-10 I destroyed all the boots trying to reach the tranny so that I could pour oil down the top of it (it worked!). Anyway When we decided replace the BA-10 with an AX-15 I needed all the shift boots again (mainly just the one in the floor) junk yard buddy pulled one off an Dodge pickup. I forget what Dodge calls it but it looks a hell of a lot like a MJ. Screwed right in. Also if anyone is curious the shifter also interchanges. I was also told that the one off of a XJ with AX-5 or AX-15 would also work but that is unconfirmed.

Well if you are ever coming back to CA or AZ lemme know I will take it. You got other long bed things you are itching to get rid of? Maybe something like a bed liner?

If you go to a motorcycle shop they make this cool little gadget that screws onto the cable and forces the liquid/spray down the housing/sleeve. It was $7 bucks i think. Bought one years ago for my old Honda never thought I'd use it again but used it on mine and it lessened.

Let's Go Camping!!!!!!
BootsNTrucks replied to benjy_26's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When the girlfriend and I go we just toss everything in the back of the truck and head out. 98% of the time we just take a tarp and spread it over the bed the secure it with 3 tie downs running under the truck works great. Metal is at a nice temperature and keeps you comfortable pretty much all night. But I have a 7' bed.....the only time there was an issue was when the tarp sagged down due to 4" of unexpected snow..... I'm sure you'll thought of tools too. I prefer my Craftsman 500 piece and Torex set, both wrench rolls, CO2 bottle, hammer, dead blow and since it doesn't sound like you are running duel batteries another battery. Damn thing as been worth its weight in gold several times.- 31 replies

Since you're already adding a transfer case and such might wana look at replacing the BA 10 with an AX-15. If you look around on Craigslist you'll probably be able to find an AX-15 and 231 as a unit that somebody pulled. Also correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't an MJ weigh in around as much as the Mustang? Sounds like I'm be tempted to run out and buy a beater full-size.

I pulled the ashtray and mounted mine there. Weirdly enough my CB from the early 70s (my dads from when he was a sophomore in HS) was the exact width as the ashtray. I was shocked there was a enough room to allow me to shift into the upper gears without hitting the it.

Aftermarket Seats in an Mj
BootsNTrucks replied to DansGreyMj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I picked up a set of Mastercrafts from a buddy for cheap but we found that the transmission hump was too wide and the seats barely fit at stock height. Normally I would just raise the seats but I'm 6'4" and didn't like my head in the clouds. Next option was to beat the the transmission hump in but we swapped the BA 10 with a AX-15 that barely fit. So I just went and yanked some seats out of a XJ and swapped seat brackets. Would post pictures but I am still trying to figure out how to do that haha -
My Herculined 90 Comanche
BootsNTrucks replied to manche_mane's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
That was a beautiful truck to begin with......not judging tho. I do kinda like that paint scheme  -
I wouldn't stay up at night worrying about it. Seems that Jeep had one harness regardless of the options. Example: My truck didn't have a windshield washer tank and it didn't look like one had ever been mounted either. Pulled one out of wrecked XJ and it bolted and connected everything. Wasn't even a 5 min project.

Strange Hesitation - Rough Idle
BootsNTrucks replied to 1989 Eliminator's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No the motor should accelerate when propane or carb cleaner is sprayed near a vacuum leak due to being more explosive than O2. It is hard to tell when the truck has a rough idle. -
Going Through Brake Lines Like A Boss...
BootsNTrucks replied to BootsNTrucks's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
the thing is I'm not tearing the rubber portion. I am bending the metal 90* elbow where is enters the caliber...I think... at least thats where the fluid is dripping from Have you removed or disconnected your sway bar links? If you are bending the metal end, you are obviously over-extending the lines and you need to get longer ones. Get hoses for a '94/'95 YJ Wrangler. You may need to bend the metal tube on the caliper end slightly, but the hoses are enough longer that your problem should be eliminated. Nah sway bar is still connected. Alright update: Put the new ones (MJ ones I already had a set) they are for a 1988 MJ/ XJ. We then cranked the truck off the ground and let it droop. There is plenty of slack. I am stumped. All these times I havent really twisted the truck up or anything either......I'm stumped....will try and find my collection of broken hoses and upload a few pictures of the breaks. -
Twist Of Death.....
BootsNTrucks replied to BootsNTrucks's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thats a good idea but part of the reason I am looking into this is my front bumper looks like it has hit every rock in the USA. I was afraid of that....I just don't like the way the truck looks with that recessed bumper set up.... -

Alright i am on my 3rd set of brake likes now. Every time my buddy and I go wheeling I bust a front driver brake line. It is metal then rubber then it goes metal again then enters a square then bolts on. Right above that square is where is keeps busting. I mean as much fun as it is to drive the truck back 30 miles without any brakes (THANK GOD SHES A MANUAL) and then using then pissing everyone off in town by using 4x4 Low.....I don't think my nerves can take it anymore. Anyway it doesnt look like its catching on anything (No scuff marks or tears on the rubber hose portion) and its sitting at stock height (probably a little lower cuz they are original with 193K) there should be plenty of length....

Well eventually I am going to mount my 12,500 lbs winch on my truck (found it laying around the barn still in the box and I'm too cheap to buy another). My plan is to make a rectangular tube steel bumper to match my rear one with a receiver in it that I can slide a winch in use and then remove when done. Now I know these cursed Cherokee front ends are weak as hell and twist very very easily. The question is what did you guys do to avoid the twist of death? I doubt one single bumper is gunna solve all issue....

Comanche Rear Sway Bar, Short Box
BootsNTrucks replied to Jeep Driver's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
what is the point? It is my understanding that a sway bar is to eliminate body roll when cornering and that truck definitely is not set up for cornering..... -

Windshield Replacement
BootsNTrucks replied to BootsNTrucks's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks man alright new problem tho the glass companies (3 so far) say that they licensing agency that certifies the installers has a clause that says that they can not modify a windshield to fit the vehicle and they can not put a windshield in a vehicle that did did not come in stock. She did confirm they are the exact same size though thoughts? -
$#!& had I know everybody wanted the diesel version I woulda yanked the one my buddy offered me....

Who makes the drop in bed liner? Been wanting one ever since I got the truck cuz I have found with previous trucks rhino lining doesn't last long enough to be cost effective for me. Where can I find one?

Shame you're in florida I have a something of a collection of shift knobs....

So I have a '88 MJ that has a crack in the windshield thats been there 10 year ( thats what i was told from previous owner) and I just got at fix-it ticket so I gotta replace it. Problem is since its an '88 (or maybe just an MJ) its supposed to have this bull$#!& trim around the outside. well i have two of pieces and the rest are long gone. I heard somewhere that Jeep later changed that made it with just a gasket. Basically replaced the metal trim with a rubber piece. Anyone know what year this occurred? It might be on XJs years after they stopped making MJs.
