If it truly came behind a YJ 4 cylinder it is not an AX15. It will be an AX5 and it won't bolt up, different style bell housings.

Long arms and lift help me build it.

I know of several rigs that run Clayton's and they suffer a lot of abuse. When they do manage to break something Clayton stands behind his products. All well engineered equipment. -
I have a 2000 XJ and have not experienced the heat soak problem. Even while towing a popup camper. I would imagine your cats are partially clogged to cause that much heat under the hood with it vented.

I bought a 99 XJ in Mass for $400, it failed inspection because the airbag light was on and the check engine light was on. I tightened the gas cap and brought it to the emissions test it needs to have for permanent plates in CT and it passed. Done. Maybe I'll get around to finding out what's wrong with the airbag or not.

Who has over 200,000 on a daily driver?
FrankTheDog replied to 88AMComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I had a 98 XJ that I bought from the original owner with 206k on it. Sold it to my ex son in law wit 390k. The guy he sold it to just told me he sold it for what I paid for it at 206k $1,700 with 430k. I replaced the centerforce clutch that the OO put in at 100k at 212k. I put in a luk gold and that's what is still in it. I replaced the stock axles at 240k with 4 cylinder 4.10 axles. I replaced the transmission at 340k with a 140k ax15. It would pop out of first gear. Water pump twice, radiator once, CPS once. Exhaust twice. 1 starter, 2 alternators, the whole suspension with a 4.5 RE superflex. Brakes and tires a bunch of times. -
If you can't afford the metric tons find yourself a set of Cherokee 3.5" leaf packs and cut the eyes off and remove all the leaves between the main and the bottom spring on the Comanche spring pack and slip the 3.5" leaf pack in. With that and a set of Chevy drop shackles you'll have much better carrying capacity and 2.5" or so of lift. You'll also need longer shocks. I've been running that setup for three years now and it doubled my carrying capacity. Also put a set of ZJ springs in the front and it has enough clearance for 31's easily. If you put an Aussie locker in the rear it'll help a lot off road and shouldn't hurt your drivability to much with a long bed.

I put a 170,000 mile old ax15 in my XJ 3 years and 50,000 miles ago and it's still working great with Mobil 1 10W-30.

With BF Goodrich Rugged Terrains in 265/75/16 Load range E tires I ran them between 26 and 28 on my 98 XJ. They wore like iron. I put over 40,000 miles on them and they went from 3/8's to 1/4".

I don't see why they make a big deal about flange thickness, on a 4.0 they all have to be 1/2" or they won't mate with the intake. It's a fixed thickness. Silly

2wd. vrs. 4wd. rotors and calipers
FrankTheDog replied to PEEJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It was. It has a 97 XJ D30 in it now. I have 2 92's built after that date and they both were 2wd with 4wd bearings. My 92 service manuals say nothing about them. -
2wd. vrs. 4wd. rotors and calipers
FrankTheDog replied to PEEJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The switch was actually made February 9th of 1992 from one piece rotor and hub to 4wd type wheel bearings with separate rotor. I have a 92 XJ made in December of 91 with the 2wd type bearings and a 92 MJ made in February of 92 that had the 4wd type wheel bearings. The date comes from Rock Auto's website. -
Get the oem looms and run them like the picture with oem wires. I've only had one HO XJ that arced out and it was @ 145,000 on the original wires.

Aftermarket gearing and highway speeds?
FrankTheDog replied to Oran Siddens's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
What do you mean by having the front axle out? Did you put another housing in or did you put the one that was in the bed in and didn't connect the driveshaft? Please clarify. Either way you will want to take the front cover off also to verify the front ratio. -
Aftermarket gearing and highway speeds?
FrankTheDog replied to Oran Siddens's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
60 MPH in 5th gear with 31" tires with 3.07's in low range = 4310 RPM. 60 MPH in 5th gear with 31" tires with 4.88's in high range = 2520 RPM. Actual RPM will be higher because I used 30.5 which is the nominal size for a 31" tire. With the weight of the vehicle reducing that a little would raise RPM. I don't think you're in low range. I do think your gear ratio is close to 4.88. Only way to know is to pop that rear cover off and see what the numbers on the ring gear say. -
Crankshaft Posidtion sensor. The pilot bearing in the end of the crank will be the wrong size. 1992 and up has a larger pilot shaft.

Your thoughts on a 91 Pioneer for sale
FrankTheDog replied to 91Pioneer's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Just don't put a front axle in it. We've been driving our 2wd 92 XJ with a 4wd trans and transfer case for over a year now. It also gives you 2 low if you put the shifter in. Plus if you decide to make it 4wd half the work is done. -
in search of manual 5 sp tranny and two locking vent windows
FrankTheDog replied to Corey352's topic in Wanted
Any XJ 5 speed from 92 to 01 will work without modification in your truck. 94 and up will be external slave so you may want a new MC and slave. -
I agree, but for some reason the 99 and up have paint problems on the roof that I don't see as much of in earlier years.

I beg to differ about that ZJ being a better car. It probably has full time 4wd. It has a Chrysler transmission. V8 + AWD= gas hog. Don't get me wrong, I like ZJ's, I've had 3 but I also had much better luck with XJ's requiring much less upkeep. 10+ XJ's with no auto trams replacement. 3 ZJ's, replaced 3 trans in one other two sold with the transmissions acting wonky.

Look at where the bumper mounts to the frame, that's where it will buckle first in a frontal collision.

Why not?
