Well, your MTs are a compromise tire leaning to the offroad side of the middle. Try DD'ing TSLs and you'll think twice. :D But then, some of us don't get to go wheeling all that often. :( I agree that swapping tires can be a pain, but it's totally worth it to be able to run the boggers. But then I carry a floor jack, co2 tank and impact gun to make the work breeze on by. :brows:

Don't overlook getting a 2wd. They are essentially the same body/suspension as a 4wd and then you won't waste any money paying for parts you won't be using anyways (meaning that if you're building it up, you likely won't want to use the axles that come with most MJs).

I really really like the Michelin Hydrotread.... .... for the minivan. :D Also good for cars I suppose. I don't own any cars. It gives superb traction and is a 90k mile rated tire. Just be aware that it is directional and at one point in time you may need to have them remounted on the rims and switched left to right. For trucks, I like the trXus MT, but I wouldn't necessarily want to DD it. It's a heavy tire and balancing can sometimes be a challenge. My 2 suggestions are always: A: buy lightly used tires rather than new. B: get a second set of rims for offroad tires. A lot of tires are decent compromises, but nothing beats a street tire for the street and an offroad tire for offroad. Bias SXs ftw!

It's not generally the drivers fault, but a combination of Jeep engineers, age, and the rain. The rain can find it's way in through various typical weaknesses (windshield gasket, A/C drain, rear window seal, door seal, firewall holes, etc) and if it gets in, it can't get out. The insulation soaks it up and floor rot is inevitable if nothing is done about it. :( The bed sides have a design flaw where dirt and debris can get stuck up above the wheel well on that little shelf and that attracts moisture and bed rot is inevitable. The bottom of the doors usually rot due to dirt getting in and plugging up the drain holes, causing water to stick around and rot them out. The rockers, well, I'm not entirely certain about them. There's probably more than one way for the rot to start and once is starts, it goes downhill fast.

Yes, yes you should go external if you can find one. Just know that if you can't find one, I can have an internal slave bellhousing in the area for you on Oct 4th-ish. :thumbsup:

Don't feel too bad about the floor. It could be worse. (like my 90, which is missing most of the floor on that side)

I've never had an issue with the household silicone and heat anywhere. But if you want, you can simply use high temp automotive silicone and it'll take anything you can throw at it short of the blowtorch. :thumbsup:

If you guys aren't along I-75 between Detroit and Atlanta, it'll be a while. I don't have the money like I used to for long side trips. I once drove 3 hours out of my way to pick up a free bedliner for the 90. :D But gas was cheaper and I was less broke. :(

In our classifieds there are a couple of searchengines for finding MJs across the country. Keep an eye on your local craigslist.org too. ebay can be useful, but you're competing against plenty of others. the auto trader type sites can work too.

Depending on where you are in Georgia, I've got an internal slave AX-15 bellhousing left over from my 90.

A basic tuneup is the best medicine for improving MPGs. Beyond that, you can remove the mechanical fan for an electric. That'll free up a couple horsepower.

Sounds like too much money. And I concur, for that much money I wouldn't let it touch the pavement after October. Heck, I wouldn't let it see the light of day until April. My 86 was completely rust free when I first bought it (for a few hundred and from a guy that drove it up from Oklahoma) and it only took one winter here in Michigan to highlight every single nick on the truck with the red cancer. :( A few years later and now I have a gaping hole in my floorboards. :mad: The truck may or may not be worth the money, but I wouldn't use it as a winter vehicle.

For what it's worth, I've had those stone guards for years now and the stock mounting system lasted all of a month or so. I gave up on it and eventually used black household exterior silicone to "glue" the guards to the headlights. Haven't had a problem since and the silicone makes it possible to peel the guard off and re"glue" it to the new headlight when one burns out.
