Spares, what do you carry?
johnnyc replied to DirtyComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Things that have failed and a friend had a spare part for - water pump on CA hwy 99 (now I carry a spare) upper radiator hose on Clawhammer Things that have failed and I had a spare part for - alternator on Interstate 15 in Nevada u-joints (several times) front axleshaft in Sedona -
OK cool, so the black wire isn't needed since the new lights are not 3-position. I don't know if there'd ever be a case where I would want them on all the time. :) Thanks.

I just got done putting two of those lights in. Works great! Just need to get some LED bulbs to make them brighter. Wiring was really odd. There's a black wire, a red wire, and a yellowish wire. I would've thought the black wire was the ground. But I used the red wire and the yellowish wire. Works just as it should when the doors are open, or by using the headlight switch. So I didn't use the black wire at all. :dunno: Thanks for the great idea!

U-bolt dimensions needed...........fast
johnnyc replied to WahooSteeler's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The tubes are 2.75", so that's the inside diameter. And I believe they usually come in 9" length. -
Me too. I'm on NAXJA every day. It has gotten out of hand, but I consider a lot of the guys good friends. Funny...I've heard a couple of people say, "What ever happened to Eagle?" And I say, "Oh, he's still around".

Just curious. Was it imazda.com or clubprotege.com ? I was on those sites, but now I'm selling my Protege because the MJ is more fun to drive.

Making a tailgate theft-proof?
johnnyc replied to johnnyc's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Electricity and a big dog are both excellent suggestions. But with my luck, I'd electrocute myself. And my apartment building doesn't allow pets. :) Yeah, incorporating a lock into the handle would be a great idea. But how? My tailgate is in such good shape, I'd hate to lose it. -
Does anyone have any clever ideas on how to stop a thief from walking off with your tailgate? Chain it to the bed?

I was at a friend's dealership to have lunch with him. I went to the men's room to wash my hands. I came out and people were kinda milling about. The quake hit while I was in the restroom, and I didn't feel a thing. My friend said that the cars on the lifts in the service department were swaying, so they all ran out of there quick. I'm kinda bummed, because I enjoy a good shaking once in a while.

pictures Re; Comanche with floor pans NONE pic's
johnnyc replied to lennyKatan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When you go to paste it, are you using Ctrl + V? And when I do more than one picture, I open up two windows. Makes it go pretty fast. That is some nasty rust. I replaced my carpet a couple of weeks ago and the floor pans looked like they probably did 16 years ago. Nice and clean without a speck of rust. Guess I was lucky. Good luck. -
Get some carpeting and glue it to the roof. J/K I had thought about other options as well since the backing on my headliner had crumbled around the edges. Didn't come up with any good ideas. I've been running without a headliner for a few weeks. There is an eBay store that offers a new MJ headliner, backing and all for $125 or so. I had been thinking about this option. On a whim, I took my old backing to a local upholstery shop. The guy said that he could repair the backing and re-cover it for $100. I'm actually supposed to pick it up today. I'm anxious to see how it turned out. Yeah, I think your best option would be to try to find one in a junkyard.

Haven't decided what color to paint it yet. Satin Black WOULD be nice. But the MJ will eventually become a trail rig and a black Jeep would not be tree branch friendly. I was thinking white since my other two Jeeps have been white and it hides scratches very well. But now I'm thinking gray or silver. That way I won't have to take the bed off to paint between the bed and cab. :)

I got my new ACC carpet from www.stockinteriors.com for $108. The seat holes were the easiest to do. All you do is find where the studs are under the carpet and whack the studs with a hammer a couple of times. Then the stud just comes right throught the carpet. The trimming around the t-case shifter tripped me up a bit. I cut a little outside the line, so there's a small hole showing. Oh well...

Got some updated pics. The ACOS deal fell through, so I just put on some coil spring spacers and V8 ZJ coils. And put on the Rubi wheels and tires. To my surprise, the tires don't rub anywhere.

I have one that I got from Harbor Freight for $29. Works just fine. Driving home from Moab last year, my CEL went on. I was able to take the reader from the glovebox, plug it in, and read the codes, all while driving the highway. For that price, it's worth it to buy one. For those times when there's no Autozones around. ;)

You're not using Teflon tape, are you? The oil pressure sender is a self-grounding unit, so there needs to be good metal-to-metal contact.

Just got a drop-in bedliner for the MJ today. Also installed a new carpet and full console. It originally had a mini console. This past week, I had to replace the fuel pressure regulator as it developed a leak which was dripping right onto the header! Caught that one just in time. While I was at it, I changed out the fuel injector o-rings too. I just picked up a WJ brake booster and master cylinder, which will be going on the MJ at the earliest opportunity. I also bought a slightly used set of ACOS, which will be installed with the Rubicon rims and tires.

They're pretty cheap at the dealer. I bought one for $11.

I've had to sacrifice a socket, hammer it on, and use an impact wrench.

can some one explain backspacing?
johnnyc replied to f1tbiker6's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Either would be fine. I ran 15x8 rims with 4" of BS for years. Now I have 16x8 rims with 3.75" of BS. The 1/4 inch difference is hardly noticeable. -
Any one here put header on their 4.0l?
johnnyc replied to Dave88's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah, that header won't match the ports on the Renix head. -
Is that right, really? Only 952 in 1992? Cool. Are there any figures that break it down even further. Like shortbed/longbed, auto/manual, 2WD/4WD, 4 cyl/6 cyl.

I just lifted the rear of my MJ 2 inches by adding an XJ main leaf (with the eyes cut off). Didn't cost a penny.

It all depends on the year of your MJ. Here's a good site to get you in the right direction, even though it was wrong about my 92 MJ. My constant wire is pink. I had to search for the particular application where it was pink. And I found the correct wiring under "93-94 Cherokee". Sure enough, that worked for my 92. http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/veh ... /Jeep.html

You have to get two Rubicon bearing retainers from the dealer. I paid about $4 each. Then you have to redrill to match the bolt pattern on the axle flange. After that, it's pretty much a bolt-on affair.
