Cut of the remains of the driver side lower control arm bracket. Made two tabs out of 1/4" steel and tacked them on. Still need to grind one edge flat and cut a skid plate/cross connector. Then to a buddy's to have them burned on permanently.

Anyone know what pin on the ECU? That could definitely be useful when winching.

Wilbur does, don't know about Sparkles, the Purple People Eater, the parts rig or (no longer with me) Booger as they hardly ever are in 4 low and I didn't pay attention. Wilbur has been doing it since I've owned it, and never a problem yet despite monthly abuse off road.

calling all Gear Gods (4.88s)
mvusse replied to raviolli's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Used gears are a bigger pain to set up than new ones, because they need to match the existing wear pattern. Not to say I have ever shied away from used gears in good shape for the right price, but.... By the time you add the cost of a master install kit (bearings, races and shims needed for the install) and the cost when you pay someone to install them, the money saved by buying used gears is negligible. -
I've seen several 97-01 2 doors over the past few years. Not very many, though.

Truck's parked in the shop, and I dug out my plate of 1/4" steel to make a new lower control arm bracket,

http://www.comancheclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1239 Read rule #2. Renix is the electronic injection system. I believe the engine has all the ports for the newer sensors, but I'm not positive on that. If you want to go to the Chrysler injection system, you're going to have to replace everything. Dash harness, engine bay harness, dash gauge cluster, fuel sending unit and pump, and somehow splice your existing taillight wiring into it. Also by 97 Chrysler had moved to a fuel rail without a return line back to the tank. This style sending unit that can accept a Chrysler pump never existed for the Comanche, so you will have to get an aftermarket gas tank without the pan in the bottom to be able to fit the Cherokee unit. If it's automatic transmission, you will also not only need to replace the transmission harness, but also the transmission itself as the older transmissions lack some sensors needed by the newer computer. I doubt a Renix TCU can talk to Chrysler sensors, and I believe by 97 the TCU had become part of the ECU, but not sure on that. Low miles or not, to go to the newer electronic I would do a full swap engine and all.

Got a Comanche again, or are you looking for one for your Wrangler? Putting a Comanche or Cherokee AX5 under a Wrangler will clock your transfer case lower. If you're willing to pay top dollar, I can almost guarantee Davey's Jeeps will have one.

I may just have to follow Pete's idea.

I agree with Eagle. I can replace axle seals in ~20 minutes per side, but setting up gears usually takes me most of a day.

A tach from anything with a 6 cylinder (whether it be a 4.0 straight 6 or a 2.8 V6) will only work if it can be adjusted for a 4 cylinder. Otherwise it would read 2000 rpm when you're really doing 3000. It was thought only the 88 and newer ones were adjustable, but I found an 87 one that is. Who knows, maybe some of the 86 ones are adjustable as well, but I have never seen one yet.
-
Some 87s have the adjustable tachometer as well, At least the one in the Purple People eater came out of an 87 Wagoneer (Cherokee with woody sides) and is adjustable. Also note that at some point (88?) the end of the speedometer cable changed. The older cable will fit the newer cluster, but will not lock in place. This has not been a problem on Wilbur for going on 4 years now, though.

Hosed off about a thousand pounds of mud and found out I broke the new axle already. hasn't even been under the truck for 2 1/2 weeks yet.
-
Covered it top to bottom, end to end (except for the tailgate) in mud.

Xj shackle Relcation kit Universal to my MJ?
mvusse replied to CoryMJ89's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Why would you even need a shackle relocation kit on an MJ? -
Yes, black interior was available in 87, Possibly also in 86, but not sure. Nobody has it, everybody wants it. Except both my 87s have a black interior. :D :brows:

Which transfer case will work?
mvusse replied to apexjeepinjoe's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It might, as different transmissions got transfer cases with different length input shafts. Some combinations may work, others may not. Also I seem to remember a post about the input shaft moving to spiral splines at some point, but can't remember what year that was, or if it was relating to Jeeps or something else. A 242 selec-trac case will work also. All the same options as a 231, plus a full time 4wd (AWD) setting. FWIW I have a good 231 out of a 96 XJ you can have for $100, but shipping to ID would probably be a killer. -
Convince me to get 33s instead of 35s... or not
mvusse replied to Rymanrph's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have slowly been coming to the conclusion I am harder on my vehicle off road than most. I run stock single piece shafts, first in a disconnect axle (blew up the diff, including my Aussie 4 weeks ago), now in a non disconnect one running spider gears until I can get new pins and springs for the Aussie. Moving stuff over from the old axle (that has been under my truck for 2 years and has had the diff rebuilt once already in that time) I came across a lower control arm 3/4 ripped off the axle tube, as well as a cracked axle tube. I have heard of bent axles before, never heard of a tube cracking. It ended up going to the scrap yard. I used to use Neapco Brute Force and Duralast Gold u joints. They were find on stock tires, so-so on the 33s, but absolute crap for running 35s. Last few years I've been running Spicer 5-760x (non cross-drilled, cold forged replacement for the 5-297x) for ~$25 a piece. I tried a set of Alloy USA Chromoly joints last time and grendaded one of those on the first trip off road. The other one is still going after three trips. -
Friend of mine was there. Send me a pic of Jessie Combs.

Since yesterday morning I've been getting this when trying to access Comanche Club through my roadrunner internet service. Unable to connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.comancheclub.com. yada yada yada Firefox comes up with this message immediately, there is no time-out. So I suspect a DNS problem somewhere. I'm currently on through a free anonymous proxy server.

Convince me to get 33s instead of 35s... or not
mvusse replied to Rymanrph's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When I ran 33s, things were okay. Then it was time for new tires and I moved up to 35s because they were almost the same price as 33s at t he time. That's when the trouble sterted. I go through unit bearings almost monthly. An axle shafts or u joints every two months or so. And gas mileage is down the drain. On the 33s I could manage 19mpg, on the 35s I can only do 14, so no more daily driver. I also had to cut to make them fit properly and still bump stop pretty aggressively in the front because once they cleared the sheet metal the inner fender itself got in their way when stuffed. I'm SOA in the rear, 6.25" in front.
