Symptoms: Engine starts fine and runs at normal idle. As I start to depress gas pedal, the engine hesitates & bogs. I cannot get above 8 MPH. History: Other than being old (140K miles), this engine has been extremely well taken care of and this is the first mechanical problem since I've owned her (almost 3 years). My coolant bottle cracked recently and I replaced it with a new one. Also replaced the heater hoses and upper radiator hose at the same time (had no issues with the hoses, but they looked tired). Purged the system correctly and it does not leak anywhere or overheat. However, I did drive the Jeep home (about 5 miles-all back roads-no highway) with the cracked bottle-the temp gauge read over 260 while steaming badly at the bottle & around the manifold side of the valve cover. Cause???: Because the overheating problem appears to be corrected, I'm not sure if I have an unrelated engine control issue (EGR, TPS or similar) or could the block/manifold be damaged from the 5-mile overheating ride home. Can you guys recommend any possible causes and/or tests I can run to identify the problem? Thanks! It just fixed itself! After my third test-drive she started running normal. I have no idea why.

Yes, I did plug it back in before the test drive. I'm heading back outside now to purge the air correctly this time.

Blatz, I followed your "air purging" instructions but I did it with the engine running (my fault-I didn't read your instructions correctly). When I took her out for a test drive, she was running like crap-low idle and no compression. Would this be symptomatic of air still in the system or could I have more significant problems? The reason why I needed to purge the system was because my original overflow bottle (21 years old) cracked.

A version of a Jeep pickup shown to Chrysler dealers during dealers meeting in Orlando, Fla. this week, has been greenlit for production in 2012. I'll believe it when I see it! http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/j ... 96619.html http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2010 ... light.html http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2010/09/so ... -2012.html

If this truck was locked away in a barn for years in Canada, why does it have a current Massachusetts license plate on it? :huh???:

1990 Rebirth ('97 Conversion)

Your interior looks great! You should swap-out your steering wheel for the optional gray leather-wrapped one-it would match the seats better. -

Couldn't find the part on Trailquest's website. Can someone post the direct link?

Transmission compatability quesion
robfg67 replied to kyleag89's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The good news: The XJ Cherokee used the Aisin-Warner AW-4 4-speed automatic transmission with both the 2.5L I4 and 4.0L I6 from 1987 – 2001. This transmission will work in your MJ. The bad news: The '94 XJ used a HO (High Output) engine and will almost certainly have a 23 spline transfer case. Refer to this site: http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Tra ... roject.htm Solution: Pay $150 for this set-up, sell your 21 spline for $50 and buy a 23 spline. -
Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. I am willing to throw the time & money into it, but I don't have that kind of time.
-
For those of you who have done it, what is a realistic time/cost expectation. I has access to a '99 XJ, but before I make the leap, what can I expect?

I already have this posted in the Classified section, but does anyone have the switch for sale? I have the light, but need the factory switch.

Can a sport bar be installed WITH a bed liner?
robfg67 replied to robfg67's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I got it in! It required some major trimming and I now need to come-up with a way to conceal the cuts in the bed liner. I think I'll shoot it with the expandabable foam and paint it black. -
Can a sport bar be installed WITH a bed liner?
robfg67 replied to robfg67's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah, the foot pads of the sport bar need to sit flush against the bed. The problem is that I can't get the foot pads to sit into the bed liner. Cutting out the size of the foot pad isn't sufficient because of the way the bed liner is shaped. It just doesn't appear to be possible to install both without some serious trimming. -
I have a NP231 if you need it & I'm local. You can take it for $40.

Does anyone watch this sitcom? I was flipping channels about 15 minutes ago and there was a brief shot of a red Jeep Comanche Chief parked outside a nightclub...pretty cool!

Interesting post… I bought my 1st MJ new in 1988. I ordered it from Pearl Street Motors in Braintree, MA-it has long since gone out of business. Back in 1987 I knew I wanted a 4x4 pick-up and was debating between the Toyota SR5 and the Ford Ranger. While watching Monday Night Football in late ’87, I saw a commercial for the new 4.0 engine being dropped into the Comanche. I did some research on the truck and just really liked the way the Jeep looked with the Chief package. I took delivery in March of ’88 and have owned Jeeps my whole life. A couple of years ago, I decided to buy a Shelby Mustang and traded-in my ’03 TJ Rubicon. Soon after, I realized that the Mustang was not the best choice for a New England winter and started looking for a cheap 4x4 as my winter vehicle. The decision was easy and after a 17 year gap, I purchased my second MJ. $8K later and still counting, I’d do it all over again!

Just tighten the bolts and buy a new lock cylinder for $13.

I'll replace both the cables & the alternator-I don't want to kill the battery, leave myself stranded, or both. Thanks guys!

$300 seams a little steep! Parts stores have the standard 61 amp alt. for about $100. What am I missing?
