  1. True -- fortunately (and unfortunately) my MJ is sitting in my buddy's garage, waiting for us to put a new clutch into it.
  2. I wonder if reversing the two wires for the fuel gauge at the connector to the cluster would reverse the way the fuel gauge reads.
  3. Don't forget an adjustable track bar.
  4. All MJs had at least one overload leaf. There were, IIRC, two configurations for the metric tonne springs. One was 4+1, the other was 3+2. If I had your truck, I think I would start by removing the shorter overload leaf AND the AAL in the body of the pack, and see where that brought the ride height.
  5. Third one down from the top (the one that's thicker than the others and has no hole for the friction pad) is the non-factory leaf.
  6. Those aren't factory MJ flares, so any measurements you get won't be worth anything to you. Somewhere on this site I posted the factory service manual measurements for stock ride height. These are taken from the axle to the chassis, so they aren't affected by tire size or by flare selection. I think that's what you need. Here it is: http://comancheclub.com/topic/11098-how-to-measure-ride-hight/
  7. There is nothing "Renix" about a volt meter. The Renix system controls ignition and injection. Everything else is just wiring.
  8. A search for "J-bolts" or "J bolts" on the ACE Hardware web site comes up blank. Do you remember what they were called? Do the ACE bolts have a flat, button head?
  9. Too dark to see, but I wouldn't bet against you.
  10. Yes, problem solved. Thanks for all suggestions.
  11. Maybe in your store. A friend of mine had a fairly new (Windows 8) Toshiba notebook that he had problems with. It came from Best Buy. When he took it back to the Geek Squad, they told him the hard drive was fried and that it would be cheaper to buy a new computer than to fix the old one. So he bought a new Toshiba (Windows 8.1) -- and promptly had trouble with that one, also. I took them both, used the system recovery utility to wipe the hard drives and reset everything to the out-of-box state, then re-installed his software. I also updated the older one from Windows 8 to 8.1. I kept both of them around for a month, playing with them. Never a hiccup. The Geek Squad flat out lied to him so they could sell him another computer. His problem was just that he's not computer savvy and he had it loaded down with toolbars on top of toolbars -- many of which carried viruses or Trojans, Once the junk was cleared out, they both functioned perfectly.
  12. I know the drawbacks of XP. My new desktop and my primary notebook both run Win 7, but the old notebook is an XP machine and I see no reason to try to replace it -- it's strictly a back-up. Plus, I have an excellent, office-grade multi-function printer that's old enough there are no drivers for it that work with 64-bit Win7, so I like having the XP machine around for the ability to use that printer and scanner. There is a hack so you can continue to receive security updates for Windows XP. I've installed that, and it gets updated periodically. Open Office has largely been supplanted by Libre Office. I've tried it and it will do in a pinch, but I'd prefer to use Microsoft Office because that's what we have to use at work.
  13. No Black Friday deals for me -- I worked. And on my weay home from work, I was rear-ended at a stop light in my wife's 2000 Cherokee. Two lanes each way. I was in the right lane, to go straight. Left lane in both directions is for left turns only, and gets an early left turn arrow so they can cross traffic. The left turn arrow went green, and the woman behind me decided to go. She stopped upon hitting my rear bumper. Doesn't appear to be any damage beyond scraped paint, but I'll want a shop to check it to be certain the unibody hasn't been tweaked. Ho, ho, ho ... :fs2:
  14. I can guess. Dunno if my guess is correct, but here goes: Some shops crank the oil filter on much too tight. Getting it off can be a real problem, and some people have been known to hammer a long screwdriver through the filter body to use as a lever. Possibly a screwdriver hammerer drove the tip of the screwdriver into the tip of the filter nozzle.
  15. Keep in mind that even the short wheelbase MJs have a longer wheelbase that the XJs.
  16. I recently gave my back-up notebook computer to the retired priest from the church my late wife and I used to attend, because his computer died and he couldn't afford to buy a new one. In order to have a back-up in case something happens to the notebook I take to job sites, I pulled out my old Toshiba and set out to update it (as much as possible for an XP machine). I realized that it has a 60-day trial version of Microsoft Office 2007 Professional on it, which was never installed or activated. The agency we're monitoring projects for has standardized on Office 2010, so I'd like to be able to run this Office 2007 package for better file and operational compatibility. Can't afford to buy a new copy of Office just to thrown on a reserve computer. Does anyone have an unused or retired license for Office 2007 Professional that they could share the product key code for? I need a key code to activate the software. Yes, I know I can run Libre Office, but since the State has standardized on the 2010 version of Office, I'd like to run Office 2007 so I'm looking at the same (or similar) menu ribbon whether I'm on the State's computer or my notebook. I'm running Office 2010 on my primary notebook for this reason.) Thanks. (Please contact me by PM if you have a key code I can use.)
  17. I hope all my Comanche Club brethren and sistren have much to be thankful for. Stay safe.
  18. Definitely subjective. More than twenty years ago, my original '88 Cherokee (which I bought new) was ready for shocks. My brother convinced me that KYB Gas-Adjusts were the best thing since sliced bread, so I bought a set. What a mistake! I should have known not to pay any attention to my brother after the way he set up the suspension in his autocross car, but no ... like a lemming, I followed his advice. Worst shocks I ever had. They were very harsh over pavement cracks, and yet they provided almost no control over large bumps and dips. I took them out within less than six months and tossed them. I replaced them with a set of some Monroe truck shock model that was discontinued years ago, and I never looked back. When I was in architecture school, my roommate wrecked his Datsun 240Z. He had it rebuilt, with a custom suspension. He came for a visit over summer break and let my brother and me try it. We each drove it over the exact same route. My brother swore it oversteered, I said it understeered. Glenn thought it was perfectly neutral. Subjective.
  19. Agreed. If the cat is generating enough heat to melt the padding under your carpet, something is seriously wrong.
  20. No, I prefer round tires. And I like Coopers. However, living mostly on Social (in)Security means that price is a major consideration for any purchase.
  21. I think I recall that the metric tonne MJ used the tallest of the four, but I'm not certain of that.
  22. But what transmission do you have NOW? That's what determines the existing gear ratio. [Edit] Never mind. Just realized the carrier break for the Dana 44 is from 3.73 to 3.92, so you would have the same carrier regardless of whether your axle is 3.08 or 3.55.
  23. 5-speed or automatic?
  24. The only way you'll find a rear axle that fits directly, without at least moving the spring perches, is from another Comanche. And the only reason to swap one MJ axle to another (other than to change ratio) is if the replacement is a Dana 44. Good luck finding an MJ Dana 44. I found an MJ specific Dana 44 on craigslist....for $400....  Fifteen years ago, in the early days on NAXJA, finding an XJ Dana 44 for $500 was considered a bargain. Times change.
