LKQ Trip and Meet and Greet > APRIL 10TH, 2010.
Geonovast replied to Automan2164's topic in Great Lakes
We're cutting up an MJ? Do I need to bring my sawzall? I also seriously doubt I'll be functional before 9. I WILL NOT be functional before 7, so Brent, no crazy ideas. -
Well, got a new problem. All the gauges work... except the tach. It's fubared. Sometimes it works... sometimes it gets stuck on one reading, and sometimes it acts like a 3 year old after inhaling 30 lbs of Halloween candy. Is it possible to replace just the tach on these, or am I gonna need a whole new cluster... again?

Ah... just noticed the bigger tires in your sig. Factory speedo gear stuff won't do you any good. -

If you're wanting a better transmission, look for an AX-15. If you grab those axles, see if you can't grab the speedo gear stuff out of the T-case. -

2.5/5 speed has a pretty good chance of 4.10s. Can never say 100% for sure without checking the ratio yourself. -

The 4 cylinder transmissions (AX-4 and AX-5) will not bolt up behind a 4.0. Also, if that XJ is a 4 speed, the axles are most likely geared at 3.55. Chances are extremely remote that it's a D44 rear end. -
Hey, if that guy wants to ship the motor and drivetrain to me, I'd be all for that. If only I knew how to get ahold of that guy and convince him to do so. I'll tell him it was your idea. The mild OCD in my brain will never let me live it down. Both MJs have the original speedos because the odometers in the trip speedos haven't matched yet.

Damn... I'd hate to take it straight to Jeep.. I imagine they'd want a couple hundred for it. I wrote down both total mileages, so when I do get the chance.. it'll be correct. Hopefully where my mom works can do it. :dunno:

No. The 4 speed and 5 speed behind the 2.5 is geared the same. The AX-4 is identical to the AX-5 in every aspect, except for missing the 5th gear. 5 speeds got 4.10 axle gearing, 4 speeds got 3.55, so that the final drive in the highest gear would be about the same. AX-4/5 gearing: 1 = 3.93:1 2 = 2.33:1 3 = 1.45:1 4 = 1.00:1 5 = 0.85:1 R = 4.74:1 Final drive works out to.. AX-4 = 1.00 x 3.55 = 3.55:1 AX-5 = 0.85 x 4.10 = 3.49:1 Changing transmissions will not affect your speedometer... changing axles will. All putting an AX-5 in place of an AX-4 will do is give you an extra gear, that's essentially useless unless you're doing 70+ on somewhat level ground. I know, I have one. Besides, changing out a speedo gear is very easy.

That's a photochop? Holy COW. You're GOOD. I thought it was an RC car.

As have I. :D I showed Jo pictures of the place and I may have cried a little... so she told me to go. Edit... wtf.. -
Just got in from finally getting my full gauges into the 99(162k) Cluster came from an 01(123k). I had been informed that the odometer reading information was kept in a swappable odometer 'computer'. After opening the idiot light cluster, I saw a chipboard with the number display for the odometer. I removed it, and after the ordeal of tearing the gauge cluster apart, I put my old odometer into the new cluster. Plugged the cluster in, turned the key, and it popped up 123k. :dunno: So I took the 01's odometer, plugged it into the idiot light board, plugged it into the truck, and it brought up the 162k. Is there any way I can get my correct odometer reading?

If it's because of being unable to drive... I may be able to pick you on my way Friday night, if I go... which I might... -

Does it turn over? Does it sputter? Does it run for a second, then die? Do you have spark? Did you hook a pressure tester to the fuel rail? I'm assuming it's a 4.0 since it has a rail.

command trac vs. select trac
Geonovast replied to vinnypd81's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Command Trac is a part time 4wd system. It locks the front and rear driveshafts together, making them turn at the same speed. With minute differences in axle gearing and tire size... this is only to be used off road or snowy conditions. If none of the tires can slip at all, breakage will ensue. The NP 207 is a part time case, used from 84-86 87+ Jeeps with Command Trac got the NP 231. Select Trac is a full time 4wd system. It behaves like AWD, and while still powering both axles, it allows them to turn at different speeds if necessary, so you don't break anything. Full time can be used anywhere, at any time. 84-86 got an NP 228 or NP 229 87+ will have an NP 242. 207/231: 2HI - 4HI - N - 4LO 242: 2HI - 4HI PT - 4HI FT - N - 4LO I'm not certain on the controls of the 228/229. -

The AX-5 is comparable to the AX-15 the same way the 2.5 is comparable to the 4.0. The 2.5 is basically the same motor as a 4.0, but with 2 cylinders hacked off. The AX-5 looks very similar to the AX-15... it's basically the same transmission, just everything in it's smaller, so it's not as strong. The AX-5 was used behind the 2.5L I4, 2.8L V6, and 2.1L Turbo Diesel I4. AX-15 was used behind the 4.0, and 258 in 89-90 YJs. The ones used behind the 2.5 and 2.8 are the same, they even use the same bellhousing. The one used behind the 2.1 is essentially the same transmission, although it used a different bellhousing, input shaft, and bearing retainer. The AX-5 used a cast iron midplate, while the AX-15 has an aluminum one. And yes, the AX-4 is literally identical to an AX-5, except it's missing the pieces for a 5th gear.

3.585???? ;) That'd be it  4.10 up front, 3.07 in back. Waiting on a 4.10 D44 for it. No T-case linkages or front driveshaft are in it. Although given its current condition, a matched rear axle is the last of its worries. -
why is it hard to shift into 2nd gear?
Geonovast replied to BigDaddy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You mean this Will? Pic sucks.. I do remember reading multiple times that the synchros for the AX-4/5 and AX-15 are different. Brass and Bronze, Bronze and Brass.. whatever. -
Can I fit (5) 35x12.5r15" Tires *IN* my SWB?

I wouldn't recommend it in an AW-4 :rotf: -

I'm not going to be there then, but I will be there soon. I may be interested because I went and accidentally donated my $25 one to my brother so he can be rid of his 3.07s. Nobody deserves those. Everything I've got has 3.55s.... except the Blue MJ, which axles average out to around 3.55  -
