coheed Posted April 30, 2025 Posted April 30, 2025 Putting my interior back together and can't remember where this brace rod goes. I've got the 2 that go from the column to the left in, just don't know where this one goes.
Gojira94 Posted May 1, 2025 Posted May 1, 2025 These are the only 2 I've ever seen on an XJ or MJ. Is that one possibly an extra from a donor?
coheed Posted May 1, 2025 Author Posted May 1, 2025 It's a different length and angle than both of those. Really scratching my head on where I removed this thing from. Changed the title to describe it better
Pete M Posted May 1, 2025 Posted May 1, 2025 kinda looks like a mirror bracket off a CJ or something.
The86manche Posted May 1, 2025 Posted May 1, 2025 Its definitely a steering wheel brace. I think my 86 had 3 i just can't find a good photo of them mounted..
coheed Posted May 1, 2025 Author Posted May 1, 2025 I'll root around in my 86 parts manual to see if I can figure it out. I sorta remember removing it from the column, but that was a few months ago, and it was also in my pile of steering column parts Both of the inner fender braces are installed so I know it's not one of those
coheed Posted May 2, 2025 Author Posted May 2, 2025 So I spent an hour combing through the parts manual and could figure out where it goes. I also spent about an hour or so looking at as many pictures I could find of 86 MJs to see if I could find a good one from under the steering column and couldn't. I distinctly remember removing the arm and thinking "why is it so much rustier than the other 2" so I'm fairly convinced it's a steering column brace. Could anyone with an 86 grab a shot under the dash to see if you have a 3rd brace installed?
Eagle_SX4 Posted May 2, 2025 Posted May 2, 2025 I checked my early 87 and couldn't find a 3rd steering brace (build date Feb 87).
coheed Posted May 3, 2025 Author Posted May 3, 2025 Was under the dash today and figured out it's actually a brace for the clutch master cylinder. I assume these are only on 84-86 years since the later clutch cylinders have vertical mounting holes as opposed to horizontal ones. Although I can't find mention of it in my 84-86 parts manual . I'll leave this picture here to hopefully help someone in the future.
eaglescout526 Posted May 3, 2025 Posted May 3, 2025 I’ll take a look at my XJ for ya this evening and see.
