Oxygen Sensor Removal Questions

Recommended Posts

I have an 89 Comanche with the I6 engine. I want to replace the oxygen sensor but it looks a little intimidating. There is a stone shield surrounding the sensor. Does this need to be removed first or will a socket fit inside the shield?

Does anyone have a good step-by-step removal write-up?

Don't know of a write up on it, but I found it easiest to do from under mine. I didn't have to remove anything to do it. I simply used 4 tools...a 1/2" drive ratchet, socket, wrench and a set of wire/side cutters.

To get the old one out I unplugged it, took the handle of the 1/2" ratchet and smacked the ceramic part of the sensor to break it off, cut the wires and left nothing but the base part of the sensor in the pipe now easy to get a socket on to remove. After a good shot of PB Blaster and a couple good persuading pulls on the ratchet it came out.

When the old one is removed you then simply screw the new one in and just snug it in good with the wrench as the socket will not work on a complete sensor unless you have the special socket with the side cut out made for such jobs.

Good luck...

From underneath the MJ, a Big Open ended wrench (7/8" or 13/16" I think) on the Nut end of the thing and my old one just unscrewed... Unplugged the wire from above first. I didn't see a shield or a need for anything drastic like busting anything off. Didn't need PB Blaster or anything....

Same 89 MJ with 4.0 :wrench:

Guess I should have added that I tried just the wrench thing, but to no avail as it was stuck tight. I went to the exteme because I could not get it out ;) .

Guess I was just ASSuming that he was going to have the same trouble. Let's hope not, but there's a how to if so... :chillin:

Based on that pic I would say the lower ring. The top ring in your pic appears to be the exhaust pipe...but, I am not sure from what I am seeing.

That appears to be an original sensor with a metal shaft. Mine had a ceramic shaft so it must have been replaced before.

Yeah, that's most likely the original O2 sensor. Agree with BLHTAZ. Douche that thing down for a day or two w. PB to hopefully break some of that rust up a bit. When you get it out, run a thread chaser through it to clean up the bung threads. Same threads as a spark plug; Autism Zone carries them. And use some anti-seize on the new sensor. Good luck getting that thing out jamminz.gif

Might I suggest that you go to

http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/

and type in your VIN number to see if the O2 sensor is on a recall list.

I checked on my 1989 Comanche a couple of months ago and the site indicated a recall on the O2 sensor and that it had never been installed. I called my local Jeep dealer, gave them my VIN number, they looked it up and confirmed it. They then scheduled an appointment and replaced my O2 sensor free of charge. Not bad for an 18 year old vehicle!

I believe that means that the work was never done. I would call the local jeep dealer in the morning. My guess is you a due a new O2 sensor installed free of charge.

Agreed.

Why bust your knuckles when the dealership will do it for you?

Well, I just made an appointment for this Saturday at the Jeep dealership to have the O2 sensor replaced for free. As the service person pulled-up the vehicle info, he responded in astonishment, "boy, I haven't seen a Comanche in a while."

Absolutely priceless!

Ok, this story has more twists & turns than a can of worms! The Jeep dealer called me back to say that their representative at Chrysler told him that the recall had expired for my vehicle.

This is an emissions recall and as such is only good for 8 years or 80K miles. I guess it's time for the PB Blaster after all!

That's not the only dealer around is it? I've got 3-4 within 30 miles; some are anal, some are not. Why not try another?

I think your dealer isn't doing you any justice....I kinda find it hard to believe a recall can "expire"?? Stranger things have happened...but.

I ask you what is a recall for? Its offered by the manufacturer to correct a problem. Its done in an effort to save lives and limit manufacturer liability, by correcting a KNOWN problem. If the vehicle is registered. It has passed any state mandates upon it, making it LEGAL and safe for road use. Not fixing a known recall could conceivably make this UNSAFE. It would also open the manufacturer to LIABILITY should anything bad happen. Its in Jeeps best interest to fix this KNOWN problem. Jeep made the recall, Jeep is still in business, it should be fixed, by Jeep.....period.

Not yelling at anyone here...Just kinda venting.... This kinda shirking responsibility PISSES me off!!!

Also, a call to your Dept of Motor Vehicles or some such place in your state with all this information might get you somewhere. :brows: :brows:
