Wipers won’t turn off need help

Recommended Posts

I have a 90 Comanche when I turn the ignition on my wipers turn on and will not turn off. Only way I can get them off is to pull the wiper breaker underneath the dash. I have replaced the wiper switch and the intermittent. I installed a 2000  Cherokee model wiper motor and a new plug for the 2000 motor. I have checked all the grounds fuses everything! I’m at a loss to what is causing this issue I put the 2000 motor in to speed my wipers up and it worked. Never had this issue till 2 months ago. I put the motor in 3 years ago. The wiper speed controls still work the thing will just not turn off. I’m at a loss 🫤 if anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated!

It’s a 90 Comanche pioneer with a 4.0 and a ax15 5 speed manual transmission. Sorry I should have given more information. I thought that was a possibility but the master cylinder hasn’t lost any fluid I checked it for leaks but it’s solid.

You are describing much of the same wiper issues I've been working to resolve. These links below have guided me on which direction to go. What I'm doing is replacing the bushings, and also generally restoring the motor and gear housing. Fresh Yamaha Molyb grease will lube the gears. I found severe corrosion and very worn out bushings. Those two things can prevent the arms from parking.

Soon I'll find out the results. Have not reinstalled it yet.

When disconnecting the Intermittent Governor, and plugging both side connectors together, I'd say it's a good sign if only low/park work.

Sorry for the slow response I was working on a solution all weekend and yesterday. So I had a friend come over he has been working on Cherokee and Comanche wiring for 30 years. We ended up having to rewire part of the wiper harness. The wires looked good but   He had the wire and wanted to do it. Turns out the wires somehow had started forming corrosion further down in the wires. They didn’t have any damage anything. He said he had seen my issue before. We checked the intermittent the switch literally everything. He had a Cherokee that did the same thing it was a 89 said the wiring was just old and started to go bad. Never seen it happen before but it worked and they are functioning how they should now so I’m not complaining.

I'm sure I've posted this picture before, but it bears repeating.  This is a battery cable.  I put the eyelet in the vise and then peeled the insulation.  That little bit of gap between the insulation and where the eyelet is crimped on gave a path for the corrosion to begin.  It is a good idea to seal that gap with adhesive lined heat shrink tubing when making new cables, or even when using a local parts store replacement.  The cable was causing an intermittent no-start before it was diagnosed.
