can someone with full console and rear carpet wall get a measurement from the back of the console to the wall?  I'm curious to see if Dakota's cupholder will fit.

I don't have a rear facing one on hand at the moment but will be making one as soon as a printer finishes so I can get a measurement of the cupholder.  I believe it is just shy of 6-1/2" but don't know for sure, I should have an answer tomorrow night or Sunday morning.

Got it done and measured, it actually only hangs 5" beyond the console lid so it will fit just fine in the MJ!

Possible mod for my XJ right there.

I think that cup holder would interfere with folding the rear seat, if that was a concern.

Good point, chances are it probably will. Course right now Chunk is in pieces still so I’m no where near adding cupholders.

This is actually one of the reasons I kept the 2-piece design like the forward facing version.  Simply lift the cupholder piece out, the mount is short enough that it is out of the way of the seat folding down so that can stay mounted.

Peanut gallery comment incoming.

Does the rear seat even have springs in the center; how often is there a butt using it? Would cutting a cup-holder sized whole be practical?

I know these Q's are odd, but this particular peanut has a 2dr xj with rear seat removed so have I two perfect factory cupholders that never see any use besides an ocasional washer/bolt/nut ;P

Since it's a bench seat I'd guess the springs run the full width of the seat.  The foam should be thick enough though you could cut holes out and at least partially recess cupholders into the foam.  At that point though would it make more sense to fab mounts for bucket seats and just build a console to go between them?

Very nice, a well thought out design.

XJ's have shoulder belts for the left and right rear passengers, and a simple slide adjustment lap belt for the center rear passenger.  So it is designed to have someone sit there.
