rylee144 Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 I have a 4.0, 2wd, and a 5 speed. I have an ax15 to swap in as i do my 4x4 swap. Will the fly wheel and torque converter I currently have still work or will I need different ones?
eaglescout526 Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 Torque converter and a flywheel? Torque converters are for auto trans and are a big hulking metal doughnut full of jelly(ATF). Auto trans use whats known as flexplates and manual trans have a flywheel with the clutch and pressure plate. Perhaps your mistaking the pressure plate and clutch combo for a torque converter?
rylee144 Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 I don't have any idea what I'm talking about, sadly. I just some some transmissions I thought ah crap i don't have that and thought I was going to have to spend money.
rylee144 Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 I have a feeling I'm missing some parts for my swap
rylee144 Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 Currently is the 4.0 with a 2wd 5 speed transmission. I have a ax15 to go in and thought my existing "guts" were still usable. Other than what's currently being ran in my truck just the transmission and t case
rylee144 Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 I'll go get some photos to add after my kiddo goes to bed
87MJTIM Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 Since you have the AX15, (I guess it is a 4wd model) you need a transfer case. Make sure it is 23 spline input shaft. An earlier tcase that went with the BA10 has 21 splines and won't fit with the AX15. The flywheel you have will work fine. Do you have the bell housing for the trans? Is it internal or external slave cylinder? That will affect hydraulic system you get. Not sure if the trans is set up for internal or external? Look at the front. Surrounding the input shaft is a plate (bearing retainer). Is the sleeve over the input shaft short (~1") or long (~3"). The longer bearing retainer is for the external slave cylinder. Do you have the proper cross member for the trans? and the trans mounting bracket?
rylee144 Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 No trans mount bracket or cross member
87MJTIM Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 Just now, rylee144 said: External! Perfect? BTW - judging from the tip, you will need a pilot bearing that would fit 74 CJ5 with a 304" engine.
rylee144 Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 I'll add pilot bearing, cross member and trans mount bracket to the list of parts to order
87MJTIM Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 I swapped from a BA10 to an AX15 several years ago. I remember all the parts I needed. Did the tcase come with the shift linkage?
rylee144 Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 No. I was given a ratty one but I think I'll get a new one. I'll need to buy the external slave cylinder too?
87MJTIM Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 Yes. I have purchased this: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1382128&cc=1180213&jsn=856&_nck=ZExt1ysfqhqWnq%2BEvUNdS3Txyey60IDtnjPWF5UU9J0BWQv7pvqZbkEUk86%2BAYIhteHnM8iYlR4ebKH3uRnjZxcDb0o67mtPZBCV8ZwaYy9iATWCyKzrWw6zMoVZjeRvj6PPTkpMNTx95f9DaD7HdXOK3NBSaOc405yvcWxQAj5x6%2B5Zs%2FXQVizs%2F8emZNwVXMFNavEZjDi2LQQFoWloc8ScKPSEC3HSeLnRHye8icso1SEmYkCR018M%2FE6Awt8A5FYKrr7MGN5%2BFrW4OkIbjLQHeTJACesL%2BmLy9rWOab%2BrYUe3BnQikb6hLuN4yGvtMPhT5EU78RGOUuu2FByiMOzVmuh%2FAlf5 Here is the pilot bushing: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=221655&cc=1309452&jsn=925&_nck=ZExt1ysfqhqWnq%2BEvUNdS3Txyey60IDtnjPWF5UU9J0BWQv7pvqZbkEUk86%2BAYIhteHnM8iYlR4ebKH3uRnjZxcDb0o67mtPZBCV8ZwaYy9iATWCyKzrWw6zMoVZjeRvj6PPTkpMNTx95f9DaD7HdXOK3NBSaOc405yvcWxQAj5x6%2B5Zs%2FXQVizs%2F8emZNwVXMFNavEZjDi2LQQFoWloc8ScKPSEC3HSeLnRHye8icso1SEmYkCR018M%2FE6Awt8A5FYKrr7MGN5%2BFrW4OkIbjLQHeTJACesL%2BmLy9rWOab%2BrYUe3BnQikb6hLuN4yGvtMPhT5EU78RGOUuu2FByiMOzVmuh%2FAlf5
rylee144 Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 Thanks! I'll add links to the stuff I locate to buy so I can double check its correct, the bracket and cross member
rylee144 Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 Is this the Transmission mount I need? https://www.quadratec.com/p/fairchild-industries/transmission-mount-eep-cherokee-xj-comanche-mj?gclid=CjwKCAiA_Kz-BRAJEiwAhJNY77J7eKHqytHmtDCV0LbbvhgnEDdOYrm2QzhM8cmu3kjDyZ2ZlUffRBoCkHoQAvD_BwE
rylee144 Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 Cross member I should get? Are they not available new? This looks used. https://deadjeep.com/products/87-01-cherokee-xj-ax15-manual-transmission-crossmember-support-skid-plate
87MJTIM Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 That one looks abused. It does look like the correct one. the price seems high, though
87MJTIM Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 I don’t think so. are there JY near you? Be on the lookout for an XJ with a manual. It can be 2 or 4 wd.
rylee144 Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 This one says it fits but doesnt say what trans it will take https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/omix-ada-transmission-crossme-s-52002328/11696862-p?c3ch=PLA&c3nid=11696862-P
rylee144 Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 If a 2 or 4 wheel drive xj will work how come my current one won't?
87MJTIM Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 Was yours originally an AX15? The BA10 was the trans Jeep used from 87 to mid-89. Since yours is an 88, I guessed it was a BA. If you have a 2wd AX15, the crossmember and trans mount should fit.
